If you're looking for that quiet, 1950s-era beach cottage charm combined with modern conveniences like wifi, LCD TVs, and a dishwasher (!), look no further.
A large open family room/dining room/kitchen area is the main point for congregation, with ocean views out the 8' sliding door or out the sitting room windows. The covered and uncovered decks, as well as a private deck off the Master BR (all with ocean views), provide some outdoor relaxation options. And the sunroom with a spiral staircase to the first floor is a great compromise between the two -- great views, lots of light, and the wonder of air conditioning!

'Rancho Relaxo' is situated in a quiet little residential area three miles past 'downtown' Emerald Isle and only a mile from a gas station, convenience store, dollar store (for all your last minute vacation needs) and the location of the soon-to-be-built NC Aquarium Pier at the Eastern Regional Beach Access area.
We have off-street parking for 3 cars, an outdoor shower for a quick rinse or a relaxing (and private) soak, and plenty of beach gear for your use: chairs, umbrellas, fishing poles (bring your own bait and tackle), frisbees, bocce -- we leave you primed and ready for a great week at the beach!
Note: Rancho Relaxo is configured as an UP:DOWN duplex. The owners maintain a smaller apartment on the first level and may be present during your rental. The owners are only occasionally able to take advantage of this, so it's unlikely your visit will coincide, but possible.

About the owner: Jenn's got a Master's in Commercial Interior Design and works in customer service/support for an Internet company. She likes gardening, quilting, and going to the beach. Shane's a software guy who's also a performing musician. He likes woodworking, light construction projects, and starting high-tech companies. We are both from the midwest and met while attending Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. Between work, hobbies, and the hectic schedules of two amazing teenage boys, we don't find nearly enough time to go the beach -- and the cruel irony is not lost on us.
Why the Owner Chose Emerald Isle, NC, USA:
We remodeled Rancho Relaxo to accommodate the comforts you would expect from a beach house, while also accommodating the needs of two families traveling together. Since then, we've ended up staking our claim to the downstairs "Owner's Quarters", but we don't get to use it very much. So you can take advantage of Jenn's designer touches, including custom-made window treatments, handmade throw pillows, and home-sewn quilts, as well as Shane's insistence on technology everywhere, with wireless broadband available throughout the house and LCD TVs (with the upgrades soon to be complete -- one TV left!), without having to buy your own beach house! In 2008, we were fortunate to be able to pack up and live at Rancho Relaxo for the summer. This made for a relaxing summer (coffee and a laptop on the deck are a great way to start any work day!) and a nice change of scenery for all involved. That same infrastructure is still in place, so you can do your online work, VoIP calls, movie downloads, etc. during your stay -- if you absolutely must.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
At Rancho Relaxo, you are simultaneously in the middle of nowhere and in the middle of everything! It's a mile to the nearest store or gas station, but it's an easy walk down the beach or along the bike path (which is about 50 feet from our driveway). With no bars or "party houses" within walking distance, you don't get the late night noise and disruptions you may have on other parts of the island, but with happening live music clubs like "The Emerald Club" less than 3 miles away (straight down Emerald Drive), it's super easy to get to the nightlife when you're looking for it. But we think the upside of this "sleepy" section of Emerald Isle is the beach. We've seen beaches in other tourist destinations where you can't find a place to lay down your blanket -- but not here. On the busiest times of year, it's usually a minimum of 50 feet between you and your nearest beach neighbor. During the off-season, it's not uncommon to walk out onto the beach and see NO ONE in any direction. The ocean is beautiful in the summer sun with waves gently white-capping against the beach, but there's something about the ocean in late fall and early spring that you have to experience to understand.
