Private, Clean, Quaint Mt. Hood Cabin W/ Infrared Sauna And Woodburning Stove

Bedrooms 1
Space 870 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 6

Choose your own adventure! Red Root Cabin is such an affordable, private mountain retreat for 1-6 people that you will likely return to it again and again. It has more windows and light than most mountain rentals.

Take hiking, skiing, biking adventures on the mountain then come back to the spa-quality 2 person infrared sauna. Listen to the warm crackle of the wood burning stove (stocked with wood!). Cook a yummy meal in the kitchen, and sit on the bench at the back of the property and sip coffee while listening to the Sandy river (not accessible, but visible Nov.-May). Wash/dry your wet swimming/skiing clothes in full washer/dryer. Picnic, play games, or just lay on the large lawn that covers most of this 1/2 acre property. Bring your laptop: Includes cable Wifi, and extra 22' monitor and speakers for your music/movies. The bathroom has tub/shower and clothing washer/dryer. Bedroom has pillow-top queen sized bed and two twin bunk beds. Main room has couch that un-folds into a full bed. Usual utensils, coffee/tea and basic condiments provided in the kitchen.

Check-in is is 3pm+ on the first evening of use and check-out is Noon on the day following the last evening of use. There is a two-day minimum rental time. If you smoke cigarettes, please keep looking: there is no smoking allowed inside or outside (it clings to the clothes.) There is no on-site manager, just a lock-box with keys. Please call if you have questions about fees/rates.

About Stuart Watson

I am a neighborhood and family mediator (Progressive Mediation, in Portland) who has committed their life to effective communication and conflict resolution. With 15 years' experience as a single parent, I know how important it is to have affordable get-aways.

Stuart Watson purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Stuart Watson chose Sandy

Very few properties on the mountain have light - with nearly 1/2 acre and a large lawn that gets sunlight, Red Root allows for growing a garden, laying in the sun, throwing the ball/Frisbee, etc.

What makes this cabin unique

The view of the river valley from the back of the property is so wonderful, listening to and smelling the river as you sit on the bench. You can see the river through the winter, when all the leaves have dropped. The property is lined with tall cedar and fir trees that you can enjoy from the row of kitchen windows and windows from the sauna room. The house is small enough to be cozy and heat with the wood stove, but large enough to have everything a home needs and the ability for people to have privacy space from each other in three distinct rooms.

Rundown and bare bones but functional

  • 3 of 5

The place really needs a good overhaul, and I would have given 2 stars but the wood stove bumped it up. The wood stove is great and does a good job of heating the cabin. There are also space heaters for each room. The outside of the cabin is rundown, and the inside is in desperate need of some love.

-Close to Mt Hood national forest - about a 10-20 minute drive and you’re in the forest.

-wood stove makes it cozy and is great to sit it front if I’m the evening

-kitchen equipped with basic pots and pans

-bed comfortable

-supply of firewood, don’t have to bring your own

-parking for two cars

-fire pit and bbq for summer

-feels rundown and a little dirty - some stains on furniture, cobwebs, curtain rods falling off wall, mystery goo inside of freezer, bar soap dirty...

-sheets need to be replaced, would recommend bring your own.

-surrounded by private property - have to drive to get to somewhere you can explore that isn’t private property

- no river access

Good stay.

  • 5 of 5

Cabin was fairly clean and comfortable, has everything needed and lots of character. We we rent there much but for the price it was a good value. The sauna was very nice when we caught a chill out at night.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

I was not anticipating a place as nice and as quiet as this for the price point. Very clean and very comfortable. I will probably book here again for my next mount hood trip. I like that there is a washer/dryer on site. I also thought I was basically getting a futon as the queen bed judging by the way the description was written and the pictures I saw. It was definitely an actual queen bed and that was a nice surprise. Kitchen was nice with basic spices. Most HomeAway homes don't have spices or anything like that. It was very easy to locate extra linens/blankets. Everything was there that you could need except for a microwave. We didn't need a microwave anyways so it didn't really matter. For the price point and how nice it was...I will never book a lodge or hotel room up there. I love the bench overlooking the river and that you can hear the river rushing by as soon as you step outdoors. Very lovely little place.

Quiet, clean, cozy, cool cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three had a wonderful week here. The location is perfect...far enough away from the hordes of tourists but still central and close enough to do quick trips to either the Gorge or Mt. Hood areas. The cabin remained cool even though it was 90 degrees all week. It was so quiet...very peaceful and relaxing. Six thumbs up! :)

Cozy, dog friendly spot with close access to Mt. Hood!

  • 3 of 5

My fiance and I really loved this little home for a quiet weekend away! Close access to Mt Hood and the surrounding area. It's in a little community but you don't feel too close to the neighbors. I will say that because the dogs can't be on furniture, I would recommend bringing crates or there own beds if they are used to sleeping with you. Also, check out the Brightwood Tavern for dinner. It's close, cheap, and always a good time. The cook was so nice!
