About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 6

Choose your own adventure! Red Root Cabin is such an affordable, private mountain retreat for 1-6 people that you will likely return to it again and again. Take hiking, skiing, biking adventures on the mountain then come back to the spa-quality 2-3 person infrared sauna. Listen to the warm crackle of the wood burning stove (stocked with wood), cook a yummy meal in the kitchen, and sit on the bench at the back of the property and sip coffee while smelling and overlooking the river. Picnic, play games, or just lay on the large lawn that covers most of this 1/2 acre property. Bring your laptop: Includes cable Wifi, and extra 22' monitor and speakers for your music/movies. The bathroom has tub/shower and clothing washer/dryer. Bedroom has pillow-top queen sized bed and two twin bunk beds. Main room has couch that folds down into a full bed. Coffee/tea and basic condiments provided in the kitchen. Check-in is 3pm-8:30pm on the first evening of use and check-out is Noon on the day following the last evening of use. There is a two-day minimum rental time. No smoking allowed, even if outside - it clings to the clothes. There is no on-site manager, just a lock-box with keys. Please call if you have questions about fees/rates.

About Stuart Watson

Stuart Watson purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Stuart Watson chose Mt. Hood, The Gorge

Very few properties on the mountain have light - with nearly 1/2 acre and a large lawn that gets sunlight, Red Root allows for growing a garden, laying in the sun, throwing the ball/Frisbee, etc.

What makes this cabin unique

The view of the river valley from the back of the property is so wonderful, listening to and smelling the river as you sit on the bench. You can see the river through the winter, when all the leaves have dropped. The property is lined with tall cedar and fir trees that you can enjoy from the row of kitchen windows and windows from the sauna room. The house is small enough to be cozy and heat with the wood stove, but large enough to have everything a home needs and the ability for people to have privacy space from each other in three distinct rooms.

Very comfortable considering the cost

  • 4 of 5

My son and I spent two nights for some quality time together and thoroughly enjoyed it. While some of the furnishings were dated, they were all clean. Due to the small size, the kitchen utensils are limited with no microwave; but it was still a great value considering the cost. I am definitely open to returning in the future.

Clean, convenient, cozy

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed this little cabin that is so convenient to Mt. Hood. Very clean, well-stocked with kitchen supplies, extra blankets, firewood, etc. Perfect for people who live in Portland and want a vacation without a long drive, or visitors to Portland or Hood River who want to spend a few days in the mountains. Lots of hiking nearby, and in the winter of course lots of skiing (Nordic and downhill). Great shower and the infrared sauna is a total treat. The listing is accurate and lots of helpful advice/suggestions provided for finding fun things to do, places to eat, and medical/emergency help in the area.

nice quiet

  • 5 of 5

Loved my stay. Wish it could have been longer. The price and a place where we could have our dog was great. Plenty of room. Next time we go up I will definitely plan ahead so we can stay again.

Fun tipsy cabin

  • 5 of 5

Nice and quiet away from it all. Floors go every which way which can give a little vertigo sensation. Great little tipsy, turvy cabin.

Quaint, Rustic Cabin

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is perhaps better than advertised and than the pictures illustrate. The cabin has all new wooden floors, a sizeable yard, an immaculate sauna (which sadly we never had time to use), and was still roomy enough for my family of 5 (with 3 teens). The accommodations were not fancy, but they definitely met our needs. From this location, we were able to hike the Columbia River Gorge (about 40 minutes away) and were able to drive up to the base of Mt Hood. There are plenty of restaurants and fresh fruit stands in the area, and there is a grocery store about 5-10 minutes away. Our personal favorite restaurant was Wraptitude (on the way to Mt Hood).
