Feb 2016, Conde Nast Traveler called the Battery Village one of "... the Most Beautiful Places in Canada...". They go on to say, "...Sunny yellow, cherry red, turquoise blue—St. Johns’ pop-art-colored houses, collectively known as Jellybean Row, look especially awe-inspiring clustered in the cliffs of this atmosphere-drenched coastal neighborhood just outside downtown...."

This coastal home on St. John's harbour shares the property line with Signal Hill National Park and has door-step access to the Signal Hill hiking and walking trails. Nestled in the cliffs of the Battery Village, the house is just 5 minutes from downtown by car and 10 minutes by foot. It has a deck with panoramic views of the harbour & city skyline, and a southern exposure that provides sunshine all day long with fantastic sunsets in the evening.

This is the best location in the city.

- 2 minute walk to Fort Waldegrave lookout

- 5 minute walk to downtown Sheraton Hotel

- 7 minute walk to Duckworth St. Restaurants

- 10 minute walk to Water Street shopping

- 15 minute walk to Duke of Duckworth pub

Best place in SJ's!

  • 5 of 5

Hipditch House was love at first site. I spent an amazing week in St John's because accommodations were perfect! I am very well-travelled and can truthfully say that not a detail was missed or overlooked in the quality of my comfort, safety and entertainment at the Hipditch House.

The location of the house in a neighbourhood called the Battery, which overlooks the harbour and city scape, was what sold me completely because it is literally a 10 min walk to all the best places: Signal Hill, The Battery Cafe, the Hot Yoga studio, the coolest gourmet grocery store, restaurants and pubs, shopping, galleries, breweries you name it. The changing views of the harbour from day to nighttime were equally magical.

The owner of the CapeRace Newfoundland Adventures tour company, Ken Sooley, took the time to give me guidance and advice about what to do and where to go with the Hipditch house as my base. It was perfect! I needed an easy smooth week where I could relax and do things at my own pace and enjoy as much as possible and this was it!

Many thanks to Ken and his Dream Team for creating such a wonderful space in the best area of St John's for others to enjoy.

From start to finish a fabulous stay!

Ken's hospitality, information and beautiful Hipditch House was such a great base for our visit to Nfld! My brother and I brought our dad to Nfld -the only Canadian province he hadn't visited - to celebrate his 75th! The house is perfectly equipped -we enjoyed the curated book (Nfld) collection, games, great house setup, comfy beds and especially the views. Great restaurants, hiking and more. Thanks Ken! -Robin, Jason and our dad Lancelot

Amazing Location and Harbour View

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Newfoundland for me, my husband and my 2 teenage daughters. Love the city of St. John's first of all, so accessible and walkable. The location of Hipditch is quite amazing; I don't think I quite realized that the house was literally right beside the steps to the trail to Signal Hill. The place is as advertised, charmingly decorated, lovely and very clean and comfortable, with an incredible view of the harbor. Beds were very comfortable; we had everything we needed. Ken was easily reached and answered all of our questions. We had to leave St. John's sooner than planned; he was very accommodating. We visited the Rooms, spent an afternoon around Signal Hill, and ate at Portobello's, the Fifth Ticket and Oliver's. Also very close by was Belbin's groceries, which we would highly recommend for its prepared foods. Highly recommended rental, we would happily come back here.

Owner's Response: Thanks Leslie!.. It was good to meet you and your son this time. Hopefully you'll come back!- We're working on a trip down to the Southern Shore for next summer. There's very little accommodation down there. Mistaken Point is up for a UNESCO World Heritage Designation, to be announced in July. Lot's of great things to explore, including the Titanic site and the oldest fossils in the world...

Great way to experience St. John's

We're spoiled now as we will expect all future stays to be as nice as this one. The house is just lovely with everything you would need, including an incredible view. Close to everything, included hiking trails right outside the door. Great way to spend a weekend. Very easy to book and access the rental - thank you!

My two girlfriends and I booked this trip to celebrate our 60th birthdays! It was a very unique and exciting adventure. All descriptions and suggestions provided by the hands-on owner were very helpful and accurate in our daily planning.

On our tour we stayed in three very different homes in different towns, all well maintained and lovingly cared for. Very comfy beds, luxurious towels. well equipped kitchens all contributed to a very enjoyable stay.

Here are a few of our adventures and places we ate:

Hiked North Head Trail, and enjoyed amazing views. Had dinner at the very popular Duke of Duckworth suggested by the owner. Scenes from the TV show Republic of Doyle filmed there.

Signal Hill and visited the Cabot Tower.

You cannot miss the Lighthouse Picnic in Ferryland. Fabulous afternoon, you can't believe where you are.

Another enjoyable restaurant was "The Mallard".

Mifflin Tea House in Bonavista. Home made soups, breads and yummy desserts!

Bonavista Social Club Restaurant - wood fired bread oven, don't miss it!

Hiked the 5.3 km Skirwink Trail, totally amazing, fabulous views.

Quaint town of Heart's Delight

Those are just a few of the exciting places we visited.

I have recommended this Caperace vacation to people since I have been home. There is so much history in Newfoundland and still places I didn't explore. The people are so welcoming. I hope to return in the near future.
