Whether you are planning a trip down the Natchez Trace Parkway, or a visit to the many sites and events of the Shoals, you can't go wrong with your own private suite surrounded by nature. We have created a peaceful and tranquil environment for the traveler who prefers being in a more natural setting.
Minutes from downtown Florence and the University of North Alabama, you will feel as if you are in a cozy mountain retreat. The studio has it's own separate entrance and private bath. The wood paneled cathedral ceilings accented with wood beams make the room (13x20) feel even larger. A natural stone fireplace with gas logs is the focal point of your room and perfect for a quiet, romantic evening. A queen size wrought iron bed with high thread count cotton sheets will allow a good night's sleep. The studio is decorated with my pottery, handmade in my studio on sight, along with other art work. See a piece of pottery you would like as a memento, just ask if it is for sale. Just a few steps down from your private deck is the outdoor shower and hot tub, available on request.
Keep an eye out for the variety of wildlife. Deer, otter, beaver, herons, ducks, owls and kingfisher are all frequent visitors. If you are lucky you may see for the occasional bald eagle. You will have a hard time believing that you are just a 5 minutes drive from the center of downtown Florence.
The globe cotton mill that stood on this site was burned down during the civil war, however the remnants of two dams and a paddle-wheel are still visible from the banks of the creek.Florence, Alabama is located 2 hours from Nashville, Memphis and Birmingham, a short drive from the Natchez Trace. It is a growing town with several new independent restaurants, as well as national chains. Florence is home to a Frank Lloyd Wright home that is open for tours. Ivy Green, home of Helen Keller is located nearby.
Being home to the legendary Muscle Shoals sound, our area enjoys a rich musical history, with recordings made here by Percy Sledge, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and many more.
Florence was named best arts and design town by Garden and Gun magazine and hosts many arts and music festivals and events throughout the year, including the popular W. C. Handy music festival each July, a Renaissance festival in October and First Fridays each month. Arts Alive is in May and the Helen Keller arts fair is held in nearby Tuscumbia is held every June.
During warm weather you will be able to fish just steps from your creek side suite, or you might enjoy the creek by kayaking, canoeing, tubing, or having your own 'happy hour' next to the water.
We live in the rest of the house and are available as little or as much as you desire.
Finding a place like this reinforces my preference of choosing VBRO over chain hotels. The spacious studio was decorated with artistic good taste and appointed with comfortable furniture. Hosts Susan and Scott offered spa-like features in the large bathroom and provided a Welcome Basket of treats. For a first thing out of bed in the morning coffee drinker, I especially appreciated the fresh coffee and coffeemaker, complimented by the pitcher of cream in the mini fridge. The large yard overlooking the creek offered a place to relax and reflect and yet it was only minutes from downtown.
Had a great time. Accommodations were first class and the river was great. My best friend and I from childhood looked online and needed a place to stay to fish and play golf at the RTJ golf courses for the weekend. We didn't realize that it was one bedroom, but like I said, we've been best friends since childhood (30 years) so it didn't bother us. Scott and Susan were super people and it had everything we needed. Had a great time golfing and were able to catch a ton of smallmouth in the afternoon. It doesn't get much better than that. Will definitely return with my son to relax and catch fish in the future. Thanks for everything.
The room was wonderful and our hostess took every measure to ensure we had everything we needed. Fresh baked cookies, muffins, coffee, and fresh flowers. She and her husband were both very accessible but left us alone. Creek access is perfect for kayaking. Creek is swift enough to be fun for a beginner, not scary. Since our kayaking was cancelled due to weather, our host made some suggestions which could not have been more perfect. In Tuscumbia, the Coon Dog Cemetery and Rattlesnake Saloon. In Florence, the Rosenbaum House (Frank Lloyd Wright) and The Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall (Tom Hendrix' Wall). If you're a motorcyclist or bicyclist, this is a great area for that, as well. Both can be done on Natchez Trace and other areas around town. Again, great hosts and wonderful accommodations. Thank you so much!!!
Sue and Scott are wonderful people, really nice and really interesting to talk to. The room is bright, airy, and spacious. It feels a bit like a European chalet, with wood beams on the ceiling and a stone fireplace for ambiance. The bathroom has luxe, new fixtures. We arrived to find a basket of fruit, muffins, and homemade cookies, perfect to take care of our breakfasts for a few mornings, along with delicious coffee that we could easily prepare. The location is just a few minutes from the sites - like FAME recording studios, the Rosenbaum House, Helen Keller's birthplace, or Tom's Wall. Or if you want to relax, Scott will drop you and a kayak off at a starting point upstream and you can drift down Cypress Creek until you land back at Otter Bend. This is also the perfect place to find peace, sitting on the deck and soaking in the sun, watching the birds, and listening to the creek's rush. We will definitely return!
