Overview

About the property

Close to Des Moines for convenience - Far enough away for peace & quiet

Our home is located on the southwest corner of our farm and is a great place for family reunions, hunters, Madison County enthusiasts, hot air ballooners and others traveling through Iowa. The kitchen is fully equipped, there are three bedrooms (2 queen/1 full) and a family game room where there is also a daybed and trundle (2 twins). There are also 2 other houses on the farm available for rent (for BIG family reunions). We love having guests but if you want nothing but privacy you will definitely enjoy our guesthouse.

About Julie Donaghy

My husband and I originally purchased the farm as an investment with no intention of living here ourselves but we were drawn to it and moved from West Des Moines to the farm a few months after purchasing. We purchased 4 Belted Galloway Cattle and now run a 110 head operation and raise pastured poultry as well.

Julie Donaghy purchased this house in 2008

Why Julie Donaghy chose Truro

We liked the convenient location to Des Moines and Kansas City; two places where we spend a lot of time

What makes this house unique

Easy to access just off of I-35 and on pavement (not gravel)

Lots of natural light and a relaxed, peaceful place to stay only 20 miles from Des Moines

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were very comfortable and well provided for. The house was perfect for our family weekend and not overcroweded at all with 6 adults and 2 kids. We used the charcoal grill on the front deck and enjoyed the changing scenery as the sun set over the iowa countryside. We had plenty of room for a game of tag football on the front lawn. Julie was also available to show the kids the farm animals including baby chicks and a newborn calf. Thanks for providing such a warm space for our get together.

We stayed one night of the planned week, and left.

  • 2 of 5

We had planned a quiet writing retreat, and looking at the website were given the impression that we would be situated on a farm, with a view of the farm. However, upon arrival, we learned that this house is separated from the rest of the farm by a thick row of trees, preventing a view of the actual farm. The house is located on the entrance ramp to a busy expressway, and that is the actual view. Also, there is a noisy natural gas pipeline pumping station directly across the street.

Upon entering the home, we immediately noticed a musty smell and a generally worn appearance. Most of the house, however, is on the upper level, and once you get upstairs, you don't smell mildew. The living room/dining room area is open to the kitchen, and nicely decorated. It feels spacious.

However, the kitchen was very dirty (it seems someone had done a superficial cleaning of the countertops and stovetop, but that's it). The floor was dirty, the exhaust hood over the stove looks as though it has never been cleaned and it doesn't work. There were crumbs in the oven, sawdust on some of the dishes, and grease spattered on the wall near the stove and onto the cooking utensils.

The tub/shower had a lot of mildew in it, and with my allergies, I could barely stand to be there. Bedding, towels, dishes, lamps, etc, seem to have been the owner's castoffs or garage sale finds, which we found offputting rather than charming.

We also did not feel secure as the front and back doors opened easily when locked and one was in terrible disrepair. We also had no phone number to reach Julie, the owner.

We attempted to contact Julie via the VRBO website that evening to ask for her phone number so we could negotiate some cleaning, and she never responded, so we moved out the next day in the afternoon.

Julie contacted us the day after we moved out to see how things were doing and to apologize for being out of town and unavailable, and gave us someone else's phone number. We replied that it was too little too late; we had already moved out and into other accommodations. She was clearly angry, denied that the house was at all dirty, insisted that we never contacted her, and that we had her phone number all along, then said, if we had just waited a few more hours, she would have shown up to check on us.

She eventually refunded only half of the amount we had paid for the week; we wanted to be very clear that this was not a satisfactory house nor a satisfactory solution.

Owner's Response: Fiction Writers. Deb built up some fantasy in her head of a Normal Rockwell resort, then she had a hard time managing her own expectation. It's sad really. My guess is that she has this problem in the rest of her life, it's unfortunate that her drama crossed our path. It's my own fault really. I should have read her auto-biography titled "DON'T EVER RENT TO ME BECAUSE I"M A CRAZY PERSON" By Deb C. All the proof of this you need is the novella review she fabricated. For the NON-Fiction accounts, read the reviews from our other guests. Deb - hope that your great american novel gets published someday. You are obviously imaginative. Brian Donaghy. Broadhorn Farm

Comfortable House

  • 4 of 5

This house was comfortable, everything worked well, plug-ins ,etc. The kitchen was well stocked with good coffee and the outdoor grill worked well. The house is located in farmland area where you can get some great photos at sunset! Julie the owner is nice and easy to get ahold of by phone. We had fun at this place.

Thanksgiving reunion

  • 5 of 5

My family and I used this and another of Broadhorn farms rentals for our annual Thanksgiving family reunion. We found these locations perfectly suited to our needs. Between the two houses we enjoyed the ability not only to visit but to prepare family meals for a very large group of family members, the close proximity of the two houses allowed for easy moving between for those who wanted a little solitude from the large group. It was very comfortable with everything we needed for a perfect stay.

Lovely property

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property, plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable. The only thing I had a problem with is that if you have older people that have a hard time getting around, there is no way to drop them off at the main level.

Beautiful farm house on beautiful property. Highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful experience with our stay! The property was so lovely inside and out. We were there for a week - six adults and two teenagers - there was ample room and we were very comfortable. More than enough space in the house and ample parking. The water for showers and bathing was instantly hot and for as many people that were in the house - we never ran out of hot water, even if all of us took showers in the morning. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, coffee maker, etc. They even had a dozen eggs from the farm's chickens in the fridge! The books, games, puzzle books, and DVDs were a nice touch. Washer and dryer were great - even had laundry supplies to use. The owners were wonderful and very accommodating. The farmhouse is close to the main highway so finding it was a breeze and getting to major visiting spots near and around Des Moines was easy. The owners left information about tourist spots and a map on the fridge - which was helpful - and a great Iowa coffee table book to peruse. We had no plans to tour the Covered Bridges of Madison County but did so because of the information the owners provided and now are so happy we took their advice. It was a great way to spend the day! We traveled to Des Moines for some family business that was looking to be stressful, but being on the farm was so relaxing, the trip ended up being more of a vacation than a week of business. We felt at home and was able to do work yet decompress. The chickens and cows from the farm graze around the perimeters of the property and near the lake. It was a beautiful thing to see every day. Very picturesque and unique for folks from Los Angeles. :-) I highly recommend this property. They owners were wonderful and this family trip is one we will always remember.
