About the property

Located about 15 minutes from Historic Downtown Pahoa and only 10 minutes from the largest farmers market on the east side of the Big Island. The Makuu market runs on Sundays from 6am to 2pm and has every fruit that is in season as well as local crafters and eateries.

Within 30 minutes of the home you can visit the Hot Ponds, snorkeling, Black Sands Beach, Lava Tree State Park, Mackenzie State Park, Farmers Markets and so much more!

30 minutes to Hilo, Rainbow Falls, Big Island Candies, and Downtown Hilo.

45 Minutes away is Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Winery, Atsuka Orchid Farms, and the lovely town of Volcano.

Charming 1 Bedroom 1 Bathroom upstairs unit. Private home, there is one home in the adjacent lot and the rest are natural forest. There are banana's, papaya, avocado, jackfruit, loquat, ginger, limes, lemons, breadfruit, coffee, and more growing on the lot.

Newly remodeled home with new paint and floors throughout.

The kitchen, Living room, and bathroom are naturally lit during the day by skylights.

Includes lots of extras, ice chest, beach chairs, beach umbrella, boogie board, snorkel sets.

This is a non-smoking home.

Before each guest the sheets are washed, floors swept mopped and swept again. Kitchen is scrubbed, dishes inspected and re-washed if needed, fridge cleaned out, bathroom scrubbed, towels washed and appliances checked. I have stayed at multiple rentals on the big island where the only thing done is the sheets are washed and I still paid more.

quaint and simple - just what we needed

  • 4 of 5

Aloha, we had a great time at the Pahoa House and stayed for two days. The neighbors were kind and shared passion fruit juice with us on our last day. We used the hide-a-bed and bedroom, since there were four of us. My only complaint would be the hot water heater. It is only about 10 gallons, so you have to take a quick one, and give it time to heat back up after doing dishes or after another person showers. (Note to owner: propane-on demand hot water heater, might be more cost effective: it is on Maui, but maybe not on BI.) We weren't expecting it to be perfect. The tap water smelled a little fishy and after observing the algae growth and sunken cover on catchment, we understood why. Thank you for having drinking water there. Interior was pretty clean, there were cobwebs in the corners and ceiling, but assumed they would be hard to reach without a step stool. We will stay again, for sure, Mahalo!!

Not good value

  • 1 of 5

This place has very poor curb appeal. You walk up a long flight of rotting (yes, literally rotting) stairs with crumbling railings to the front door of a very unprepossessing abode. It doesn’t look too bad inside at first glance but describing it as “recently remodelled” is an exaggeration. That was done some time ago and the craftsmanship is poor. The ancient stove has one burner out. The others work OK. The refrigerator, washer and dryer are fine. Drinking water is bottled only. The hot water tank is small. We ran out of hot water for showers and we are not people who take long showers. The lanai is in dreadful shape. There is no BBQ. The cleaner did not clean under the bed. There is a large accumulation of dust there. The louvered windows are in desperate need of cleaning. There are trees around the house which is very nice but be forewarned that they are inhabited by a large number of very vocal Coqui frogs which call all night, at least in February. Being nature people we slept through the noise. Don’t bother complaining about the rooster crowing at 5:00 am just outside. There is an infinite supply of wild chickens amongst the trees waiting to replace it. We did not meet the owner. For this price we stayed in much nicer places with warm welcomes from the owners. This is nowhere near what we consider to be the VRBO standard. At the price charged we cannot recommend it. Worse still we were charged a refundable damage deposit. We did no damage whatsoever. We are still waiting for that depose to be returned despite two emails requesting it. No reply.

Owner's Response: Pahoa is one of the wettest places on earth. The steps are 5 years old and most of the decking on the lanai is 2 years old. The house itself was finalized just 2 years ago. Unfortunately with the constant rain it causes the wood to rot very fast. Everytime I have a window of it not raining and guests not present I work on the property. I just recently replaced the first flight of stairs. Coqui frogs are present year-round and it's a fact of life living here. Essentially the maintenance here is 4 times as much as almost everywhere else in the world and the price I am charging is less than most other places in the world along with being one of the cheapest in the area on VRBO. The value you get for this property is very high. Having traveled extensively I know most places are double the cost and in bad shape. VRBO automatically refunds the damage deposit and I received notice that it was sent. The place is listed as private, I respect this privacy and do not bother people when they stay. I notified the cleaner to clean the windows and dust under the bed.

The house is very nice on the inside. The place is clean, there are plenty of towels, and the bed is very comfortable. We could not get the bottom oven to unlock in order for us to cook with it. The house feels far from civilization. Our 4wd rental car was helpful as Gardenia is a dirt road.

A little out of the way, but not hard to find

  • 4 of 5

This was a little farther out from Hilo than I thought when I made the booking, but it turned out to be very convenient to Kalapala (my husband went to rent a bike and take pictures of the lava after dark one evening) and we loved the restaurants in Pahoa, so everything turned out well.

Charming one bedroom!

Even though it's a one bedroom, it's so incredibly spacious! We loved our stay! I would highly suggest staying here!

water smelled awful

  • 2 of 5

The bed was comfortable, but it smelled a bit moldy and the water was not good. We used bottle water to brush our teeth because the water smelled so bad.The neighbors were a group of 5 men living together and not very friendly. If we were on the porch they just stared at us and would not say hello.
