About Dawn Yoshimura
I'm an artist living on O'ahu, where I was born and raised. I left at 17 to study art on a scholarship in San Francisco, eventually getting my BFA from California College of Art. I've always drawn and painted and am very curious about how things work, so I also have a BS degree in IT and an MBA, having worked in systems design, technical and strategic corporate communications, most recently promoting lean philosophy and principles in sustainable business strategy in Sweden for the past 13 years. Now that I'm back, I enjoy painting, hiking, paddling, golfing, sailing and other outdoor activities. I also enjoy the variety in Hawai'i with its local foodie scene for all budget levels.
Dawn Yoshimura purchased this Apartment in 2014
Why Dawn Yoshimura chose Mākaha
As someone raised on the Windward side of O'ahu, I like to say that it is the 'best' side of the island to live on and the most beautiful. But the reality is that each part has its unique, unbeatable charm. Makaha, and the West side, for me has the most beautiful deep blue of ocean and sunsets--something not possible to see in Kane'ohe. We fell in love with Makaha because we could relax in a place that reminded me of my childhood before development that has made Kane'ohe one of the largest towns on the island and it is almost always sunny and 'beach' weather, without flying to one of the Neighbor islands, yet, you can always get into your car and drive into Honolulu and experience the pulse of an international city. I find myself sitting in the apartment or on the lanai most of the day--the view, sound and smell of the ocean fills the room and is very relaxing, so for me a 'day trip' can be walking downstairs and going to the pool or walking on Makaha beach just outside the door. This is where you can catch up on all the reading you meant to during the rest of the year or write one yourself.
What makes this Apartment unique
This apartment building is as close to the beach you can get, compared with anything else in Makaha. My apartment, however, is on the end, facing the ocean, so you feel like you are the only one at this site. The end units look straight out onto the ocean with the reef just below in front, so it is protected from the big surf. There is a city Bus stop outside the apartment building, if you really don't want to use a car and shops in Waianae that sell and rent bikes for getting around between the Waianae and Makaha or to the other beaches. A super-sized boogie board is rented on the beach, it looks like fun for a group or family to try. Country living but only 20 min by car to the town of Kapolei and world class resorts.
Pool / Spa
Forget ocean view, this ocean front studio is priceless!!
PRICELESS ocean front unit, competitively priced and perfect for 2 people. We stayed last 2 weeks of October, weather was perfect. Building is quiet, clean and has laundry, pool, free parking and 1 min walk to beach from the unit. Studio is as show in photos, cozy, clean and fully stocked with all the appliances and even some beach supplies. Amenities are about 5-10mins drive away (groceries, Starbucks, KFC, McDonalds, Gas station, etc). The area is very safe and are made up of mostly local Hawaiians. The only down side, which I did not expect, was the amount of traffic and traffic jams. But just give yourself extra 30mins (more if driving to or through Honolulu during weekday rush hours) and just enjoy the view of the ocean. Property owner/manager is very accommodating, replies quickly, and took us on some hikes and tours, very knowledgeable. Overall an excellent place for extended (2 weeks +) stays, HIGHLY recommend staying here. This was our very first vacation home rental, and we were delighted! THANK YOU DAWN!! :)
Mahalo! You were such a pleasant couple and I enjoyed spending time with you, you are welcome back anytime! I am glad you got to see and do so much during your stay! I think you had absolutely the right attitude while on vacation--take your time, avoid driving in rush hour traffic and relax!
Clean, comfortable, crazy view
Dawn's place was very clean, comfortable with an amazing view and perfectly located for those quiet nights, strolls along the beach or treking through bush. She has a few supplies stocked for use and replacement before you head to the shops - a nice walk or short bus-ride away. I just loved being in Hawaii and away from the bussle of the busy city yet close enough in Makaha for great shopping in Kapolei or those wonderful island days basking in the sun and surf. Fabulous internet so got lots of work done as well. Worth a visit for sure and a repeat trip is on the bucket list again!! Thanks Dawn - this is a definite recommendation!
We loved staying at Dawn's place. She is a great host, and she was there for us whatever we needed. We had a feeling like we known each other for years. Apartment is beautiful, clean and cozy, perfect for a couple. Is equipped with everything you may need for a short or a longer vacation. The best thing is the view!!!! In the morning you can watch whales splashing their tails and in the evening the incredible sunsets! Makaha beach is a great sandy beach, mostly with waves and its perfect for surfing. Overall we are thrilled and we had amazing vacation. Thank you Dawn!
Aloha Maja! So glad you enjoyed my studio and discovering the beauty of O'ahu! You are most welcome again! A hui hou! Dawn
This is a perfect vacation retreat for those who want to enjoy Hawaiian beaches and a laid back tempo. For those who want some adventure and variety, day trips in a car to the North Shore, Waikele Outlet Shopping Malls and Honolulu reward your return to peaceful Makaha. Anyone staying out here should visit Kaena Point at least once to experience how Hawai'i must have looked like to the first Hawaiians arriving to the islands. All sorts of water activities can be done, from the beach, or the nearby harbor--fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, stand-up paddling, etc. Regarding dining, a trip to the Kaumana Farms with organic and vegan choices in a beautiful setting is a nice break from home cooking. There are all the usual fast foods, including a Starbucks in nearby Waianae, including a very tasty Chinese restaurant next to the 24 hour Longs Drugs store. You can also buy reasonable fresh lei from Longs.
