Beautiful Location at Puako Beach Oceanside

The Honu Cottage is located on a well kept and pristine oceanfront property. This lovely, well built guest house has vaulted ceilings and it's own deck. It's attached by a walkway to the main house. The owner reserves the main house for his part time visits to Hawaii. This apartment above the garage is cozy, clean and well ventilated with windows, tradewind breezes and ceiling fans. It’s very private and anointed with tropical style decor. A big flat screen TV, wifi and a smart DVD with Netflix give you all the advantages of home.

There is a full kitchen with new appliances and the bathroom is big with lots of built -in storage. There are views of the tropical landscaping from the windows and from the deck, there is a partial ocean view. It's a short walk to the water from the front lawn. It is equipped with beach towels and beach chairs and a gas BBQ grill. There is a washer and dryer in the garage for your use. Sleeps an extra child or teenager on the sleeper sofa.

You will love it!

$250 per night, plus tax and cleaning fee. Sleeps two, and we have a sleeper sofa if you have a child or teenager.

Sharp ® (AlohaDebbie) has been a Hawaii licensed Real Estate Broker since 1985 and a Hawaii resident for 40 years.

Our staff oversees all of the day to day operations: repairs, communications, arrivals and guest requests. We are on call every day for any emergency or guest need. We have numerous repeat guests. We have been managing Vacation Rentals in Paradise for over 21 years and we have lived in the Islands for all of our lives. We are here to assist you with your dream vacation!

Why Marla or Debbie chose Kohala Coast

Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is a small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door.

Puako is conveniently located for visiting all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 3 hour drive.

Puako Beach is a combination of tide pools and patches of coral sand, but there are several fabulous white sand beaches just a few minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding. There is great surfing spot called Paniau at the end of Puako Beach Drive. When the surf is not happening, fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving will entertain you with beautiful green sea turtle, eagle rays, brightly colored tropical fish and one of the most glorious coral reefs in the world.

The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 30 minutes, Kailua Kona 50 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.

What makes this cottage unique

Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.

Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.

The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!

Nice cottage. Pictures are misleading.

While this cottage is lovely, and it is LOCATED on ocean front property, the cottage is behind a large house and has ALMOST NO OCEAN VIEW to speak of. Do not expect to sit on the lanai and watch for whales or honu. You are allowed to sit in chairs in the back yard, but if it happens to be raining, this is not an option. To be fair, it rained nearly the entire three nights we were there. That said, the cottage is lovely and private and well-maintained. I would recommend to management washing linen and towels in perfume-free detergent for visitors with sensitive skin. The property manager during our stay, Jay, was very personable and accomodating. We would consider coming back to this property, next time with eyes wide open, and hoping for sunny weather.

Upsides: good location close to nice beaches and decent snorkeling and tide pools out the back of property.

Puako General Store is close by, though a bit pricey and limited in offerings.

Nearest full market is probably in Waikoloa Village about 20 minutes away.

Wifi works well.

Window air-conditioner works well but is noisy.

Shower is warm with good water pressure.

Fairly private.

Downsides: must walk around garage and upstairs which is hard with heavy luggage.

Tiny ocean view.

A bit noisy as bedroom backs to Puako main road and is also directly over garage.

TV is small to medium sized. Did not realize we could get Netflix thru DVD player.

"Big Island Revealed" book is present, but needs a current edition.

Very nice spot

Very comfortable stay at Honu cottage. Was wishing for more of an ocean view, as we could hear the surf but not really see it.

Managers responded to any issues raised during stay. Puako is a great part of the west coast to stay.

Spacious, clean, well-equipped.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Hawaii on four different locations, and this is the only vacation rental that was truly bug-free. It's also very spacious and very well-equipped.

The rental is conveniently located at Puako Bay. It's very close to Beach 69 and Hapuna Beach, all of which offer decent snorkeling, though not as good as at the Captain Cook monument. Tide pooling at Puako bay (right behind the house) is excellent: Cowries, oysters, turtles, urchins, ... lots of fun. Waipio Valley is also a relatively short drive away.

Overall, a very well maintained and highly recommended rental if you want to stay in this area.

Postcard perfect!

So my initial inclination was to skip the review or write a terrible one in the hopes that this place would be available 52 weeks a year, for my wife and I. Couldn't do it... If you're looking for busy nightlife, bright lights,, miserable weather, cold winds, rain, and fancy restaurants, carry on. On the other hand, if warm ocean breezes, great snorkeling out your back door, quiet days, and postcard views from every room are your thing, I can't imagine how you could be disappointed here, if so, that's your own fault. Unreal, thank you

We had the pleasure of renting the Ohana above the garage for a quick marriage ceremony on the ocean front lawn. The sunset was amazing and the wedding was such an unforgettable experience. The management team was amazing and did a wonderful job. I really want to leave five stars, but the unit above the garage was extremely hot. I highly recommend a portable AC unit. Everything else was the best!!! Mahalo Nui Loa, Luke & Nipha Whiteside =)
