Why Kim Eisner chose Durango

We purchased this property for its unique, private location on the Animas River and only 3 miles to town and the best bakery around! Having lived in Durango for over 30 years we feel fortunate to have been able to purchase this cabin before it even went on the market.

What makes this cabin unique

The views from the cabin to the west are of the Animas River and cliffs, while to the north are the San Juan Mountains. The east are the red cliffs that tower above and to the south is wide open fields. This is a unique cabin that feels like home as soon as you enter and whether you choose to read on the deck or cuddle in front of the fireplace you will enjoy your stay!

Durango Mountain Resort

Durango is a destination located in the mountains with something for everyone! From the Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Mesa Verde, Anasazi Indian Ruins, to mountain and road biking to skiing. We have a fabulous public recreation center, state of the art library and both live drama and movie theaters for indoor activities. Durango Mountain Resort is located approx. 15 miles north with both downhill and cross country skiing, as well as horseback riding, sleigh rides and zip lines. During the summer Durango Mountain Resort hosts The Music in the Mountains, which features some of the best musicians from all over the world. There is a natural hot springs resort with both hot soaking pools as well as a cooler swimming pool with 3 miles from our property and Pagosa Springs is within 1 hour as well. The list of hiking and biking routes, trails and opportunities for both single and group rides is too long to list but the main loop for locals to train for the famous, local road bike race, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, is the road our property lies on.

In town, Durango supports multiple local breweries and wineries as well as a distillery and over 100 restaurants with everything from authentic Mexican to Greek and Italian food offered. Fort Lewis College, a small liberal arts state college is located above the city on a mesa with views to both the mountains and New Mexico.

A town that offers so much for every season you will want to stay!

Beautiful scenery from a lovely cabin/apartment

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was absolutely immaculate and had everything one would need. Great attention to details. The 2nd floor deck provided spectacular views of the river valley. Conveniently located, far enough from the city for peace and quiet yet close enough to run downtown for an evening meal. I would definitely choose the same rental again.

Lovely bright apartment- great deck overlooking animus river and valley

  • 5 of 5

This was the super place to stay. Close enough to town to be convenient yet set out in the beautiful countryside overlooking the Animus River, valley and high bluffs on either side. Two bedrooms, and a sweet living room with fireplace, comfortable chairs, discrete TV, and that fabulous deck and view. Pretty, modern, light kitchen and bathroom. I nice linens, nice extras like scotch tape and sewing kit if you need it. Walk down to relax by the river. Friendly, gracious hosts. We really hope we will be back!

quiet, clean, peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Close enough to Durango for convenience, far enough for seclusion. Spotlessly clean, nicely appointed, great view from the nicely sized deck. The sound of the train passing by on occasion enhances the feel.

Nice cabin w minor issues

  • 3 of 5

Cabin had very nice and comfortable interior and seemed relatively new. Overall a good stay w great view. Minor issues: exterior yard looked like construction zone and farm storage; bank access to river was steep 15 ft drop, fishing was very difficult; neighbors were close and a police stakeout was occurring from our cabin driveway. Was a bit sketchy for our family w lil ones. Access was via long staircase, difficult w cooler etc. Easy drive to town was another plus. The steep price was only for the view.

pretty place in a good location

  • 4 of 5

I was loathe to write the review because I had some mixed feelings about this place and thought them better kept to myself. But VRBO hounds you mercilessly for a review and frankly, I do read them when I'm choosing, so maybe someone will benefit from mine.

First off: perfect location in a perfect valley. Close to town and yet out in the peace of the country and gorgeous of the valley and cliffs. The house (upstairs built over large garages) is so cute and tidy and well-decorated. The amenities and little touches are great--although some additional pots and pans and more than 4 plates would be a help for those who cook there. There is sufficient room for 4 (not more unless it was a small child) and everything is modern and nice. Furthermore, the owners were pleasant and easy to deal with. So here's the rub, the photo to the left shows an open field down the river--how peaceful and lovely. Unfortunately, when we were staying, there were multiple large construction machines/equipment and giant hills of dirt (fun for my two boys to be sure but an eyesore) between us and the river. And on the other side, (in case I wanted to avoid all that and look up the valley from the very nice deck) there was more "storage" of wood, tires, and miscellaneous agricultural items. I am aware that this valley is home to alot of agriculture and if I had all that stuff, I would need somewhere to store it. But as a guest, enticed by gorgeous pictures for my vacation bliss, I frankly was disappointed to have all that as a part of my view. Maybe that won't matter to you, potential renter and that's great. But I thought you should know in the event that it does.
