Proximity to historic centro and a feeling of rural tranquility
Light streams in from every direction in this new contemporary/colonial home with fabulous views of the churches of Historic Centro and the lush hillside adjoining the Botanical Garden. I designed the house after years living in San Miguel and observing what makes a home comfortable. With year round sunny weather here, I made sure there was plenty of outdoor living space, shaded porches and "estancias" , outdoor rooms, for relaxing in the open air. You will enjoy 4 levels of lush gardens and a solar heated lap pool and jacuzzi It's a 10 minute flat walk to the Central Square (the Jardin) and 1 block to the Fabrica Aurora Art Center with its shops, restaurants and cafes, and galleries.
The house has an open plan for maximum light, ventilation and functionality. There is a large gourmet kitchen with European stainless steel appliances, including a 6 burner stove and dishwasher, and a double sink, from which you look out to a garden with stone water wall and koi pond and a cactus garden beyond with native plants. There is a breakfast bar does double duty as work space and informal dining, as well as a built in dining banquet seating 8 - 10.
The living room has a gas fireplace which warms the entire space on cool winter nights, and there is a flat screen TV, and computer nook with internet and phone. Origninal art and Mexican folk art create a warm ambiance.
The ensuite master bedroom adjoins the great room and also has a gas fireplace, French doors leading to a Juliet balcony, with a custom made iron railing, overlooking the lower level gardens and the cityscape beyond. The same metal artist created the unique headboard and a comfortable mattress makes for a wonderful sleep. The dressing room features a polished concrete counter with 2 hand painted Talavera sinks,. There is a separate toilet room and shower/tub room with large skylights.
Dine and entertain on the covered outdoor portico which wraps around the living area and features a dining table and couches, all surrounded by built in planters with herbs and flowers.
An exterior staircase from the foyer leads up to the roof terrace or down to the lower lever with a second ensuite bedroom and bath with a 3rd fireplace. On this level you will find an additional 1/2 bath, outdoor covered sala (living room) with woodburning fireplace, 32' solar heated lap pool, jacuzzi and gardens. Every space enjoys the views of countryside and town, a unique combination in San Miguel.
You will enjoy the newly built neighborhood on a private cul d'sac.

About Susanna Turino
I come from an artistic family and studied fine art and landscape design. I spent my first decade out of school doing batik paintings and selling and exhibiting them in art fairs and galleries. Before moving to Mexico in 2009 I had lived in New York State’s Hudson Valley, where I owned a well known craft gallery for 14 years. Later I ran a garden design business called Dragon Tree Design and wrote about sustainable gardening in a monthly column for a home and lifestyle magazine. I’ve traveled extensively in Europe, North and South America, as well as Asia, Hawaii and Alaska, visiting and savoring gardens and art. Since retiring in Mexico, my time has been well occupied getting to know my adoptive country and learning its language. After spending 4 years renting , I found the lot here in Colonia Obraje, next to a green hillside with stunning views of the city’s churches. The house took 6 months to design and another year to build. The gardens are never done! Under the premise that “build it and they will come”, the house includes an art studio, and has become ground zero for my oil paintings of flowers and other flora.

Incredible Home In A Magical Town!
Love at first sight!!!! My husband and I stayed here for the month of January 2016. We were awed the minute we walked into this home. Susanna's casa is gorgeous and the view is stunning!!! We have rented numerous houses in San Miguel de Allende and this one tops all others. It is perfectly designed and has an abundance of natural light. January was a chilly month but the house warmed up quickly thanks to the gas fireplaces in the main room and both bedrooms. Most of our time was spent on one of the two beautifully landscaped terraces which provided us with incredible views of the Centro and mountains in the distance. The layout of the house was perfect for us...great room, gourmet kitchen, dining area and master bedroom with en suite bath on the main level. It was so nice not having to climb stairs which is very unusual for SMA homes. There is also a bedroom on the lower level with en suite bath. The swimming pool is located there but it was a bit too chilly to take a swim.
The casa is filled with lovely art and tastefully decorated. The furniture and beds were extremely comfortable. The location couldn't be better...a flat walk to the Jardin and also very close to the Fabrica La Aurora art gallery. There are good restaurants in the area though it takes only a few minutes to walk and enjoy many other fabulous dining options in SMA.
Lupita the housekeeper came three times a week and kept the home immaculate. She did all of the laundry including out clothes which was so helpful and allowed us more free time to explore the town.
It was difficult to leave this wonderful casa. We would love to stay here when we return to San Miguel de Allende!
A Magical Casa!
My college roomate and and I stayed at this magical casa for the entire month of January 2015. It was a "girls" trip and we left our husbands at home. It was also our first visit to San Miguel and the first time either of us had booked through VRBO. We were both somewhat nervous, since we were women traveling alone from the U.S., to a place we hadn't been and to a home booked through an online site. We were the first guests for this owner and there were no previous reviews to calm our fears. However, all of our concerns were totally unfounded!
We had a fantastic experience in all ways. Booking with owner, Susanna, was easy and she was extemely helpful giving us tips on getting from the airport, places to eat, shop, etc. She even left us breakfast, which was a lifesaver since we got in so late. We took the BajioGo shuttle from the Leon airport and the shuttle driver had the keys to the Casa. We got to the home around 11:00 p.m. in the evening. Despite the late hour, the driver was wonderful and even helped us unload our baggage and negotiate the locks on the casa doors. The home far exceeded our expectations. The pictures are good, but really don't do it justice. The home sits on a hill overlooking the city of San Miguel de Allende. It is beautifully furnished in the Mexican style and Susanna's artist touch and art work is everywhere. The casa is on several levels with each level having a terrace and a fantastic view of the city, cathedrals and surrounding country side. Susanna's beautiful gardens, containing flowers and vegetables that we were allowed to harvest, are on every level. The entry has a charming koi pond and water wall as well as beautiful flowering plants and an orange tree that kept us supplied with oranges. Each bedroom had a gas fireplace and there was also a fireplace in the living room. These came in handy as it was January and cool when we first got there as well as most mornings and evenings. The french doors off of the master bedroom overlooked the city. Truly romantic. Too bad our husbands weren't there!
It was a little to cool to use the pool or hot tub but they were available and had a great view of the city.
It was a short two block down hill walk to town. Taxis were cheap (30 pesos) and plentiful though if needed. We always felt safe. The beautiful Fabrica Aurora art gallery was a block away and we loved that as well as the restaurants there. It was a great experience with a fantastic owner!
