We build a lodge for families to enjoy the beautiful Back Hills and rediscover a love for God's creation of nature and the gift of family and friends.
Sue purchased this Lodge in 1994
Why Sue chose Custer
The Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota Tribe and a source of gold for hundreds of years. Our lodge has a wonderful view of the internationally known Crazy Horse Monument and we are 15 miles from Mount Rushmore National Monument. The Black Hills are also home of the famous Sturgis Rally (67 miles away) and Hot Springs, SD (41 miles away) that has the largest Prehistoric Mammoth Dig Site in the world! This active paleontologist site is open to the public in a large heated and air conditioning building containing the remains of 58 Columbian and 3 woolly mammoths, along with the remains of many other ancient animals, such as saber tooth lions and Giant-Short Faced Bears. We are also close to the amazing Wind Cave National Park, (16.3 miles away) with 140.47 of explored miles so far, Jewel Cave National Moumorial (16 miles away from the lodge but the two caves are over 30 miles apart from each other) with colorful caverns and we are only a few hundred feet from the Mickelson biking and hiking Trail, a 109 mile limestone surfaced trail.
What makes this Lodge unique
We are one mile from the internationally known Crazy Horse Monument and 15 miles from Mount Rushmore National Monument, with the four Presidential Faces. Wie are also only four miles from Custer State Park and two miles from the Black Hills National Forest. Buffalo, Elk, Deer, Mountain Goat and turkey, are just some of the widely diverse wild life that can be seen regularly in the area.

A great time was had by all
Had business in Hot Springs so we went out a couple days early to do some ATVing & Kayaking.
It was a very nice cabin with a great views and close to a lot the main attractions of the Black hills.
By the end of the days we were exhausted and slept great.
Everything we needed was there.
The description of this property stated that three of the four bedrooms contained one queen bed each. This is not true. Only one of the three beds was a queen; the other two were doubles. I even checked the sheet label for one of these two beds, and it said "double." The main reason I rented this property was because it was advertised as having 3 queens, and this would have been quite suitable for our 3 adult couples. Had I been aware of the actual bed situation I never would have rented this property.
We can also ditto some of the previous complaints registered by other renters: produce-freezing refrigerator, inadequate AC, lack of outdoor amenities. Also, the ice maker didn't work, and we had to buy ice.
On a positive note, the property is ideally located, and the views of surrounding countryside were lovely.
SO HOT in SD, yes I realize it is July
We had a good stay. The location was beautiful, close to Custer and easy to find. The house was the perfect size but the small air conditioners did not cut it at 100 degrees. Although there are lots of window and the cooler nights were great! House was not as fully equipped as some rentals we had stayed at but will know better what to bring next year to cook for a large group. Cant say we Loved it but we did not hate it. All in all a great weekend. Thanks.
Roomy cabin, GORGEOUS views, and perfect for large groups (NO A/C tho)!!
Two families stayed together in this cabin mid-July and found it more than roomy and comfortable, with the option for retreat to individual private rooms. There were 8 of us, 3 adults and 5 kids, which I would contest is the maximum for a comfortable stay. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms and a loft--2 bedrooms, each with 1 queen bed to accommodate 4 adults, a 3rd bedroom with 1 full bed to fit 2 siblings, and 1 futon in the loft to comfortably fit 1 child, plus a cot (which no one used). On the main level, there's one small bedroom with a twin bed. The beds were really comfortable. With LOTS of windows, the cabin sits on a hill and has AMAZING panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including immediate views of Crazy Horse coming up the drive. It is directly off 16, which leads to most main attractions--no more than 20-30 minutes either direction--Mt. Rushmore, Bear Country, Reptile Gardens one way and Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake/Needles Hwy, Wild Life Loop the other. There was only one problem, which may be a huge hang up for anyone staying July/August...there truly is NO air conditioning. Although there is a working portable A/C unit on the main level, it is too small and did absolutely nothing to help cool the cabin in afternoon/evening. We made sure not to return until early evening, leaving the windows fully open all day and fans running as it was the only way to keep air circulating in order to reach semi-comfortable temperatures by 6-7pm. There were small portable fans that helped to keep us cool as we slept, but we were grateful to have brought a couple additional small fans of our own. The mornings and early part of the day were amazing and pleasant, so we made a point not to hurry on our excursions until around 11am and enjoy comfortable temperatures relaxing in the cabin. There were screens missing from a few windows, which we discovered upon leaving all the windows open when a hornet flew in and stung our 8-year-old. Not a pleasant evening for him that particular night. Just make sure not to open those windows! Also, it would be awesome if there was a deck to enjoy the view from, since it was usually breezy and pleasant outside during the hot part of the afternoon. Yet, there was no where to sit outside and no functional picnics tables to have dinner. Plastic, durable picnic tables would be ideal. All in all, I would highly recommend this cabin and would love to return during cooler months.
We won't be back
We go to the Black Hills every summer and rent a cabin. This cabin lacked any kind of outdoor activity area. No deck to have morning coffee or area to play games or simply sit outside to enjoy a sunset. The hills has so many other cabins to choose from and it wasn't worth the price.
Pictures of the property were very deceiving. Wasn't a bad property, for a younger crowd but not what we thought it was going to be. Expensive for what we got.
Two miles from the lodge is the landing pad of a helicopter that provides viewing rides of the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. 7 miles from Tyburn Crown is Hill City the home of the Black Hills Institule of Geological Reserch that discovered 'Sue' the fossils of a T Rex. Not only do they have a museum of prehistoric fossils but the public can also buy real fossils!
