Having both attended the University of Virginia in the early 90's and after receiving degrees in English/French (Grier) and Architecture (Kevin), they decided to make Charlottesville their home and have lived in the Belmont neighborhood since 1999. Kevin (mostly) grew up in California and Northern Virginia and Grier in New Hampshire. Following college, Kevin took his architecture skills and put them to use working with a high-end builder at Wintergreen to be able to learn the building trade first hand. In 2004 he opened his own design-build firm and put the best of both worlds together creating a one-stop-shop for his clients where his designs then became his next building project. Clean, simple lines and a bend toward Danish-influenced style with an emphasis on unique applications using natural wood make up much of what Kevin is drawn to. Grier took a different path post-college and opened a small cafe on the Uva 'Corner' which she successfully grew to eventually include a second location on the Downtown Mall and a mobile food truck. After nearly 8 years, in 2004 she sold her restaurant and refocused her interests toward a career which focused on her love of houses: real estate. 13 years later, Grier is an Associate Broker at the local Charlottesville firm Nest helping buyers and sellers alike. Grier and Kevin live nearby and personally renovated the entire home prior to listing on VRBO. They also act as the property managers and oversee the booking, cleaning, and guest's unique needs.
Grier & Kevin Murphy purchased this bungalow in 2014
They have lived in Belmont for 18 years and have seen it undergo many changes, mostly all for the positive. It is wonderful to be able to share what they love about this neighborhood with others.
Some of the things that the owners love about HighGround include the gleaming natural light that filters throughout the house and the fact that while this home is only 1000 sq ft, it lives much larger. The spaces feel both intimate and separate from one another. As indicated by its name, HighGround has a wonderful presence at the high point on the street. The front porch is the perfect vantage point from which to take in the evening sunset and they love that in less than 10 minutes they can walk to some of the finest dining, best local parks, coffee shops, small food markets, great shopping, UVa, and some of Charlottesville's oldest landmarks.
Perfect 2 BR house for our Charlottesville stay! Clean, comfortable, and cool. Location is great as well. Would definitely come back every time. Just as good as the pictures.
We loved our stay in Charlottesville! Communication with the homeowner, Grier, before our arrival was so easy. She even accommodated our very early-morning arrival, with treats waiting on the dining room table. Cleanliness is important to us, and this home lived up to our very high standards. The well-stocked kitchen included not only the expected pots, pans, dishes, silverware and glasses but also spices and condiments (the kinds of things you hate to have to buy when preparing one or two meals). The location couldn't have been better. On our first day we walked to the downtown mall, stopping for breakfast at the Bluegrass Grill, then heading across the street for some CD deals at the music store. If you visit, make sure to set at least one night aside for a special dinner at Tavola, just a couple blocks away. We ate one of the most delicious meals ever at this cozy Italian restaurant. When we return to Charlottesville -- and we definitely will -- we'll be sure to check if this home is available. We'll be back!
We just returned from a weekend in Charlottesville and had a great stay at HighGround. The cottage is fully renovated and decorated like a boutique hotel - it was just right for our family. We enjoyed the quick walk down the street to La Taza for coffee and had a delicious meal at The Local too. We were able to walk to the downtown mall in less than 10 minutes - great location! The owner was easy to work with - good communication, etc. We would stay here again!
I rent a lot of homes through VRBO and this is one of the best I've ever rented. It's a great home, well located and even better furnished. A family of four had a lot of space, great Wi-Fi, spacious kitchen and complete comfort. Snacks when we arrived, blankets for cozy reading in the main room and comfortable beds. Well done by the owners, who were easy to deal with. I wish I could find the same kind of place everywhere I go.
This was a cute house that was only a few blocks from so much in Charlottesville. The interior seemed newly remodeled (or just very well-kept!) and there were a few amenities already there - like toilet paper and dish soap - that were nice to have available. The owner was easy to work with and provided a lot of great information about the surrounding area, which was really helpful as I hadn't been there before. Overall, it was a great experience and this is a great place to stay!
