Space 1,400 sq. ft.
Property type house

Overview

About the property

A 3.5 bedroom, 2 bathroom mountain house with 2 private decks and a private dock

A peaceful, private, pet-friendly lakeside Sierra Nevada retreat among the trees. This house is in the woods has a trail leading down a hill to a quiet corner of the lake. Relaxing in the chairs or the hammock on the two decks on the back of the house feels like being up in the trees, and there is usually some wildlife around.

In cooler weather, the 2 wood stoves make the entire house toasty and cozy. There is also a thermostat for central heating.

Upstairs there is a queen bedroom, a bedroom with 2 twin beds, a full bath, a living room with wood stove and stereo, a spacious kitchen, dining area, and access to the upper deck. Downstairs there is another queen bedroom with full bath, an entertainment room with DVD player/TV, a futon sofa that folds out to be a queen bed, and access to the lower deck, with bistro table/chairs and hammock. The futon is next to the stairs, which are open to the living room upstairs.

The house is a great base for exploring Yosemite National Park and the surrounding Sierra Nevada, but given the lake, the space, the nearby beaches and other amenities, and downtown Groveland, it's also a destination in its own right for family trips, birthday parties, romantic weekends, holidays, friend reunions, creative solitude, etc.

A well-equipped kitchen, BBQ on the deck, and dining table and chairs for up to 10 also make this house ideal for Thanksgiving or other group feasts.

About Geoffrey Witek

I came to California 15 years ago, and immediately fell in love with the Yosemite area and set about looking for way to have a home base here. If you browse the bookshelves at the house, you'll get a sense of my travels and my interests from the overwhelming number of wildflower, mushroom, and wildlife field guides for California, my native New England, and my more temporary homes like Japan and New Mexico.

I work as a translator in San Francisco, but having this house allows me to keep one foot in the mountains, and to make frequent escapes from the SF fog to recharge my spirit by soaking up some beautiful natural surroundings.

Geoffrey Witek purchased this house in 2013

Why Geoffrey Witek chose Yosemite Area

Buying this house came about as a part of my long-time passion for exploring and sharing the beautiful Sierra Nevada and Yosemite National Park. I was splitting my time between San Francisco and Tokyo, while also working a few months a year as a backcountry hiking and mountain guide in Yosemite, and I found that when I had down time Groveland was where I wanted to be. The private dock on the lake closed the deal for me.

What makes this house unique

The house is close enough to Yosemite to use as a base for exploring the Park, but has all of the comforts of home--like a well-equipped kitchen and a washer/dryer--that hotels or tent cabins lack. Also, since the house is on Pine Mountain Lake and just a few miles from historic downtown Groveland, there is plenty to do right there without having to go very far.

Average House

  • 3 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed in this house and spent a few days there at Pine Mountain Lake and a few days at Yosemite. The location is good, and the lake is nice, but this house was simply average, it's oddly layed out, most of the trees on the property had been cut down, and we had some issues with the house.

We kept the house clean and didn't have food laying out or anything, but each morning we'd wake up to ants in different locations of the house. The owner did not have anything on site to spray them, so we had to run to the store to buy some spray, and then the whole house had the wonderful aroma of ant killer. This went on for a few days and the homeowner then had a pest control guy come to the house and we had to get out of there for at least 3 hours.

The dock is nice to hang out on when the water is high enough, but it's a LOOOONNNGGG way down to the dock from the house and VERY STEEP! You pretty much have to drive down there by way of the gated access road. The dock was dirty and covered with spiders and webs. Once those were cleaned up, we spent some time and energy pumping up the inflatables and put the kids out on them, and they soon started to deflate because they had small holes in them.

Overall, not a great experience staying at this house. It's a decent place to stay, but there are much better offerings in the Pine Mountain Lake community.

Nice house

  • 3 of 5

I'm giving it 3 stars due to the fact that the house is not on the lake you have to walk down a huge hill which has no stairs just dirt and rocks, not safe at all. The gas grill was dirty and greesy half broken, tv had only 4 basic Chanels and non working DVD. My impression was that the house stands next to a private dock and we never used it because it's impossible to walk down. You can drive down and enter through gate but that's a headache. Very dangerous to go down to the deck. Other than that house was clean.

Peaceful Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Quiet and peaceful, perfect vacation. Close to everything we wanted to do. Property was very well kept. I would go back in a heartbeat. Located on a little cove that was great for swimming and fishing. Owner is great, answered all questions promptly. The photos are accurate, as is the listing. I can't say enough what a good time we had. Perfect!

Enjoyable trip with a few issues.

  • 3 of 5

For the most part we enjoyed our stay. There were a few problems - wrong code given to us for the key lockbox; air conditioning not working during 100 degree heat; BBQ catching on fire because of dirty grease pan; but the owner was very responsive to our inquiries and complaints and was able to resolve the issues. The house was nice and the location convenient to our trips to Yosemite. Pine lake was fun for swimming and canoeing with our family.

Perfect for a Yosemite vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house was exactly as advertised and perfect for exploring Yosemite. It was about a 30 minute drive to the entrance of the park. The lake level was very low behind the house and it is very steep down to the dock, but it was only a few minutes drive to a very nice public beach that had a nice dock and slide for the kids to swim. The owner was very responsive when we needed to call and fixed a small issue promptly. Overall a very comfortable home. I would stay here again if in the area and would recommend it.

Peaceful getaway with family and friends

  • 4 of 5

I was looking for a "lake house" where the kids could play in the lake while not having to leave the house. NOT the case with this rental as the lake is a bit off the back side of the rental and so many trees in between that you can't see the lake from the back decks. Being in this drought also made the water level so low that the stagnant lake finger behind this property was not in swimming condition. The ramp to the dock was so steep that we never went down for fear of not getting back up easily. We ended up driving to the local beach area which was nice.

Things that we liked about this property:

House was clean and orderly.

The games and puzzle on hand (kept kids and adults happy).

Reading materials to look at.

Enough area for two families (of four) to have their own "space."

VERY peaceful area and loved the hammock on the back deck. Never saw or heard a neighbor.

BBQ was very clean and easy to use. We grilled two out of the three nights.

Having a canoe and inflatables to use down at the dock (although we didn't).

Daily visits from deer.

Showers supplied with all-in-one soap (although we brought our own).

Local grocery store is close and well stocked.

Yosemite is close enough that we did a day trip into the valley.

Geoff (owner) very easy to communicate with and prompt with his replies.

Things to be aware of:

Spiral staircase narrow and steep (not great for young children or elderly)

10am check out time, which is on the early side especially when we are requested to wash and dry all towels before leaving.

There were no food storage containers for left overs.

No pillows for futon.

Unexpected parking permit needed to be purchased upon entering the gated neighborhood (owner let us know a few days before showing up)

Overall, I give this 4 stars because although it was not my ideal "lake house," it worked out and both families had a good time. The pros outweighed the cons :-)
