Country-house in the midst of 10 hectare private estate

Bedrooms 2
Space 699 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

1 double room, 1 twin room

This stylishly renovated country-house - sleeping up to 4 people in total including children (extra bedroom for 2 more people in a separate studio can be available upon request) is situated on a hill (altitude 500 m / 1425 ft) between Orvieto (20 minutes by car) and Rome (one hour by car) in sophisticated surroundings with an incomparable view of Civita and the Tiber Valley. Private with an above-ground pool. There is a lovely barbecue area where you can grill outside in the summer time. The owner lives in a separate villa. The historic village of Civita and Bolsena lake (15 km) are located nearby. There is so much to see in terms of art, museums and Etruscan ruins. In less than 30 minutes by car, guests can also enjoy the famous Terme dei Papi Spa for a completely relaxing experience.

Ameneties: Just a five minutes car ride away in podere Casone, you will find several nice restaurants serving high quality foods made with local ingredients. For travellers who don't like driving too far away, the nearest train station (Alviano) offers daily trains almost every hour to Rome's Termini station, Florence's Santa Maria Novella station, and many other major Italian cities. The owners of the property will be glad to give suggestions and recommendations for daily trips to cities like Todi, Orvieto, Assisi, Viterbo, Roma, Siena, Arezzo, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano and many archaeological sites like Tarquinia, Sovana and Tuscania. Private drivers are also available upon request.

Civita : This very inspirational town can only be reached by a pedestrian bridge and is very close to our villa. It is built on a soft volcanic stone, called tufo, which has eroded creating an historic example of integrated ecological design. That's why the view is so spectacular in the ever-changing light. This town surely has richness not found in other modern cities. Civita has preserved much of its medieval character and still has traces of Early Roman and Etruscan civilization. Don't be surprised if, while walking through in Civita, you feel like you are walking through another era.

Podere 'Il Casone' is strategically located on the border of two central regions: Umbria, called 'Green Heart of Italy', and Lazio. It is east of Tuscany (Siena 1 hour 1/2) and north of Rome (1 hour by car). Casone is 20 minutes north of exit Attigliano on the A1 Autostrada del sole. The rural landscape offers forested hillsides, vineyards, lush farmland, streams, mountains and the beautiful Tiber Valley, rich in small medieval hillside towns. The Civita Valley is particularly evocative because of its unique and breathtaking view. Civita sits majestically on top of a hill surrounded by a wonderful canyon. For this natural beauty, the village has been chosen by artists as one of the most inspirational and attractive places in Italy. The artistic season of Civita is in August (opera, musical and theatrical performances). The emotional village-wide live Nativity Play at Christmas is getting very popular. This area considers a sophisticated alternative to other crowded touristy cities.

Wonderful peaceful holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday here, with our 7 year old daughter. The house is very private and overlooks some spectatular scenery. Despite it being so peaceful, we were not at all isolated - there were so many different places of interest that were accessible from the area, we would need to come back (which we hope to!) to make the most of them all. One of our favourites was Lake Bolensa, which we visited either to enjoy the beach and/or the restaurants there. It is even possible to spot the beautiful ancient town of Civita di Bagnoregio from the house, which is also definitely worth a visit. There were many supermarkets within easy driving distance too. The house itself is very cosy and scrupiously clean. And the private pool was perfect and especially welcome, given the temperatures in August. Our lovely hosts, Francesco and Maria Pia (who live in a house just a little further up the hill), could not have been more kind and helpful, even leaving some bread, cake and other goodies to welcome us on our first night. Would highly recommend!

Perfect for relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this really cosy house with a breathtaking view. The house is set in spacious grounds giving total peace and quiet and a spectacular view of Civita in the distance. The lovely owners Francesco & Maria Pia live in the larger house close by but never invade your privacy except to occasionally offer help or a cake.

We were a family of 4 (grown-up kids) and visited plenty of beautiful towns in the area but would also have been happy to just relax in the quiet or float in the pool overlooking the valley. We would definitely recommend staying here and hope to return.

Complete relaxation

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay as it a perfect place to relax in peaceful surroundings. Maria Pia and Franco cannot do enough to ensure you have everything you need and the property whilst basic is charming. The pool and outside areas are beautifully maintained. The local villages have good bakeries and supermarkets and there are plenty of historic places to visit close at hand. Florence and Sienna are easy to get to as is Rome - by train or car. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a complete getaway to recharge your batteries!

The Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you want a true get away from it all experience then this has to be the ultimate. Set in a beautifully picturesque area of gentle hills and valleys, this simple and comfortable property is the perfect place to relax. It is within 30 minutes drive of the restaurants and shops of Bolsena also 15 minutes away from a well stocked Spar store from where local wines meats cheeses and fresh bread is available.

The 4 foot deep pool is ideal for cooling off and there are plenty of shaded areas to sit and drift off or read. There are plenty of loungers, tables and chairs for al fresco dining. Franco and Maria Pia keep the surrounds extremely tidy and flowers are everywhere to enhance the look of the place.

Night times are especially magical when the garden lights are on and the stars come out. You can watch the shooting stars over a glass or two of the local wine or have yourself a barbequeue and enjoy the sunset over the wooded valley opposite.

The property is scrupulously clean and the owners are really lovely people who repect your privacy but are near enough to help with any issues which may arise. (They live in the house 200m up the track) although you won't see them during your stay except to welcome you and to say "Arrivederci!"

I can and have recommended this property to friends.

This is my second visit to Il Fenile and I shall no doubt be revisiting this lovely friendly place again.

Il Fienele

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday. My daughter and I arrived very late to find that everything was ready for us. However Francesco could not rest until he had made sure that we were safe and comfortable. We were made to feel part of the family. If I could have stayed longer I'm sure Maria Pia would have managed to teach me Italian. The views were stunning and there were plenty of places to visit. I also recommend the Deli in Cittavio Which was well stocked and friendly.
