Beautiful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Great location to explore Volcano park and close to Hilo. A lot of attention was paid to all the details inside the cottage. The bed, furniture, furnishings and art were all high quality, and the woodwork was amazing. It was a great romantic get away setting.

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

Design, woodwork, furnishings, fireplace, and quietness were all areas that we truly loved. Unfortunately, we picked the wrong time of the year. Had some rain and cool weather. Thank heavens there were two sets of towels since the towels took a longer time to dry because of the weather. The electric blanket and the other blanket were truly appreciated. We did wish the little heater would have put out more heat but the fireplace was quite romantic to have in the evenings. Having grown up in Hawai but being away for quite a few years, I had forgotten how cool it can get during the winter months. The place, however, is beautiful. Would definitely stay there again when the weather is warner. Loved the welcoming vase of flowers filled with daisies sand beautiful anthuriums. The anthuriums brought back many memories of living in Hawaii. Thank you so much for that touch of the Aloha spirit.

Rain Forest Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have had the absolute privilege to stay at the Hot Lava Retreat's "Mauna Kea" studio cottage recently, and are still buzzing over our experience. Brilliantly hand-crafted by Derek and his father and brother, this tropical getaway was perfect for us in so many ways--the attention to detail (fresh whole coffee beans to grind, a gorgeous vase of flowers, sumptuous linens), the tranquil rain forest neighborhood setting, and the proximity to wonderful Volcano Village amenities and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park--it is hard to imagine finding a more charming place to fit our vacation rental needs. Our impression of the Hot Lava Retreat is that is has been created with absolute intention to serve many purposes--intentionally media-free, creating a Zen-like environment, while still offering blazing Internet speeds for those requiring global connectivity. Proximity to the national park and fabulous food and art in the village is disguised by the park-like setting of the Retreat's location. Visiting in January, we were treated to tropical rains at night that enhanced the vibrance of the surrounding forest, but thanks to the beautifully-manteled gas fireplace, kept cozy and warm while curled up on the elegantly-appointed furniture. We supplied ourselves in Hilo, about a 30-minute drive away, and were delighted to find more than one delicious Thai food offering just moments from the studio. For a couple such as ourselves, seeking the unique and desiring to honor the alternative, the Volcano Hot Lava Retreat was the perfect choice for our Hawaiian volcano experience.

Perfect little home base

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time in this beautiful little cabin, which was a perfect home-base for 5 days of hiking in Volcano National Park. It was terrific to be so near the park entrance, as we popped over most nights to see the glowing crater. One night, we were lucky enough to see lava bubbling from the lava lake, which rose considerably over the course of our stay.

The cabin was very clean and in great condition. The kitchen, though tiny, was stocked with the basics, and we had no difficulty cooking meals for the duration of our stay. The general stores in nearby Volcano Village made it easy to restock our little fridge as needed. We had a few days of intense rain, which was no problem, as we simply drove south to the Black Sand beach to enjoy the sun, the massive waves and the basking sea turtles one day, and poked around the nearby galleries and the Volcano Winery the other. Coming home, curling up by the fireplace and listening to the singing birds and the rain on the metal roof was pure heaven!

Cozy, comfortable, beautifully furnished and everything you need. Private, beautiful surroundings. Easy to find, close to Volcano National Park. I have stayed there twice and it's my first choice for staying in Hilo or Volcano area. Love it!

Beautiful cabin

  • 4 of 5

This was a really nice location right outside Volcano National Park. The bed was comfortable and shower had really nice pressure and very hot. The place was very well maintained. It would be nice to have some chairs out on the balcony so we could sip a glass of wine at end of day looking at the gorgeous scenery. A beautiful place.
