Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

If you are looking for a classic mountain getaway, with a superb location in the Nantahala National Forest - on Lake Nantahala - this is your place! By 'classic' we mean it was built by our children's great-grandparents as a mountain vacation home and fishing base back in the '60s. It is NOT a million dollar McMansion thrown up a few years ago that will cost a fortune to rent. It's our family lakehouse. And, we're happy to rent it to you.

This vacation get-away is located on Lake Nantahala with direct access to a private dock and absolutely beautiful views of the lake and mountains. The lake can be enjoyed for swimming, fishing and boating. Many other outdoor activities are within arm's reach of the property.

The location of the house on the lake is something special, a place where you can retreat to get away from the grind of normal life. It is a true escape, nestled away in a stand of enormous poplar trees with a view of the large lake area in front of the distant dam. The hours melt away as you settle into a life of mountain informality, fantastic natural surroundings and wonderful fellowship with family and friends.

The house was one of the first properties built on the lake, and has been maintained and updated with modern amenities. The two-level house is ideal for families and groups of friends. The upper (driveway) level has two bedrooms and one large sleeping area with a screened-off double bed, two single beds and a couch bed. The lower level features a family room with a wood burning fireplace, a large, well-equipped kitchen, and an outside patio facing the lake with a gas grill. It has all the character of a family mountain cabin, with added features like remodeled kitchen, washer/dryer, satellite TV, and DVD/VCR.

The public boat landing is nearby, within 5 minutes by car or a short 15 minute walk. A canoe is included along with paddles and personal floatation devices.

About LaRue Wait

Natives of NC and SC with a number of family members living in points North and West.

LaRue Wait purchased this house in 1962

Why LaRue Wait chose Topton

The house was built by our father and mother when there were only a few houses on the lake. The land it was built on was part of a large tract of land that our parents bought back when the Nantahala Lake was known to only a few local mountain folk. It has been in our family ever since.

To say that there are countless memories of visits and gatherings of family and friends is a huge understatement. We gather here during three seasons (it's a bit cold in the winter so it is generally closed then) and enjoy the wonderful scenery and all that mountain fresh air.

This house is a true treasure and was built by our father and other local mountain men. The stone steps to the lake were laid by a local mason. The trees, including two apple trees and a pear tree, were planted by our father. And to this day I tend to and add to our mother's wonderful selection of native plants that add different colors to the landscape throughout the year.

What makes this house unique

Nature, the lake, the fresh mountain air and communion with loved ones.

Great Lakeside Rental

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (and our dog) had a great stay. Lake Nantahala and the surrounding area is beautiful with tons to do. Got in a lot of swimming off the dock, canoeing/boating (canoe included and rented a pontoon from caretakers), fishing, hiking, and sightseeing. The lake house had everything we needed and was in great shape.

Owner's Response: David and family: We are thrilled that you had an enjoyable stay. This house is a family treasure for our family. My children grew up loving it and all the family gatherings - along with some normal " family drama" ! We hope you will choose to visit again'. Thanks!

Clean, cozy, and quiet on a beautiful peaceful lake

  • 5 of 5

I found everything impeccably clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well furnished and I felt as if I was welcomed into a family member’s home. The house is quiet and comfortable, and the lake was even better. If for some reason you can’t find something you need, the folks next door will go out of your way to be helpful and neighborly to help you

A great place to stay with nature

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful cabin in the woods near a beautiful lake. The house is in great condition with an amazing fireplace, grill, and a dock, everything you need for a great time outdoors. It's a wonderful getaway from the modern world. It also has very poor cell reception there which is unfortunate but if that's what you're looking for then it's great. The owners are also wonderful people and very understanding.

Owner's Response: These guests were fleeing a hurricane and were on the road a great deal of the time we were trying to get them information, but they were great to keep in touch and to respond to any changing circumstances. We tried to help them feel safe and comfortable. They were great to communicate to us at every change of event. I hope they can return to enjoy our lovely area without the stresses of storm threat at some time in the future.

Tranquil lake house

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our two dogs had a great three night stay at your place. It is a well-appointed, no frills lake house that is right on the water. Even with excessive rain due to the remnants of Harvey, we waited for stalls to paddle, fish, swim, and hike nearby Nantahala/AT trails. A true getaway!

Perfect family getaway

We loved this house! We found it comfortable, clean, and well-stocked, with lots of games and videos for the kids. The lake and mountain setting was superb and easy to access. We swam every day and enjoyed exploring the lake by canoe.

Some of the best whitewater in the USA is within 1-3 hours driving distance. Also, fantastic road and mountain biking, as well as hiking are accessible within minutes. The Appalachian Trail is 7 miles away, and Bartram Trail is within 2 miles. The Nantahala River is 12 miles away.

Fishing on the lake and in nearby rivers is also very good. Plenty of local advice can be had through local tackle and outdoor stores.

The Cherokee Indian Reservation is a 1 hr drive and has a casino, souvenirs and a wonderful, family-friendly performance called Unto These Hills documenting the Trail of Tears.
