We are located 5 minutes from historic Honoka'a in a peaceful, park like setting. Our spacious home has a private wing for our guests with 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, a family/entertainment room and a massage room. Indoor entertainment includes a full size pool table, books, games, art supplies, a piano and other instruments, DVD player, wifi, and therapeutic massage by appointment. On our 5 acre property, we grow avocados, bananas, citrus, coffee, guava, macadamia nuts, papaya and pineapple, seasonally available. This is a great spot for walks, hikes or bike rides, exploring the quaint town of Honoka'a or visiting Waipio Valley. Our location is a perfect starting point for exploring the islands dry side beaches, lush valleys and waterfalls, the quaint town of Hilo or bustling Kona, the volcano or the top of Mauna Kea; all are within an easy driving distance.
For many years, we have been hosting family and friends, sharing with them our enjoyment of this beautiful island. We love to show and tell our favourite beaches, snorkel spots, hikes, restaurants, shops, and activities. Charley has combined his love of wood working with his passion for the ocean and surfing to create wood surfboards. Lisa, a massage therapist by trade, loves hula. We also play music together.
lisa and charley erck purchased this house in 2006
What a beautiful home. Lisa and Charley were so nice and welcoming. The home is on a gorgeous lot, and the drive up the mountain to the home is spectacular. I believe some of the largest trees on the island must be alongside this road. I highly recommend a stay here. Wonderful people. Wonderful home.
Lisa and Charley's place was so perfect! It was quiet and comfortable with everything we needed. These gracious hosts and the beautiful home they built put my wife and I in the best possible frame of mind to see almost all of the Big Island! After full days of driving around sightseeing or surfing or being lazy on the beach(es), we'd come back exhausted and chat over pool (billiards) or play some music with these wonderful musicians or just fall asleep in their quiet and comfy country home. Also there is no better way to wake up in the morning than with a fresh cup of Hawaiian coffee and wandering around the banana, citrus, and cinnamon trees. 10/10 wouldn't stay anywhere else.
After navigating the winding road to find the home, we realized it was actually pretty near to the town of Honoka'a. The beautiful workmanship in their home added to the experience. Lisa baked muffins and banana bread for us, fresh papaya with bananas was a favorite ! Sharing the bath with our fellow travelers worked well, the use of the laundry much appreciated. Dining options in Honoka'a were limited and museums were closed. But the horseback ride up Waipi'o Valley was terrific, and Lisa's recommendation to check out the local farmer's market on Sunday was a nice find. She also helped with directions to various sightseeing options along the road to Hilo.
Lisa and Charlie Erck are excellent hosts. What they have done with their with their own hands to make what they now have is truly inspiring. Their humor, musicality and hospitality are all top-notch, and our stay there was fantastic. They were also very understanding when we found out that we need to stay there longer than we originally planned. They welcomed all of us including 2 young children, 2 dogs and 1 cat! Would highly recommend to anyone looking for peace, quiet and country life.
Wonderful hospitality. Spacious comfortable space. Delicious muffins!
Staying at Lisa and Charley’s home felt like being welcomed into the home of longtime friends. What a lovely couple, and what a charming home!
It was a delight to spend our first night on the island at Lisa and Charley’s home. I loved falling asleep to the night “music” of the jungle. (I am a light sleeper, but I found the sounds to be soothingly pleasant, and it became completely quiet by the wee hours of the morning.) We awoke the next morning to a beautiful, lush landscape and a delicious breakfast of hot, homemade scones and fresh papaya out on the lanai. (Lucky me – Lisa shared her recipes with me!)
We were given full use of two bedrooms, a lovely bathroom, and a reading room with a comfy couch, a mini fridge, a tea kettle, and a toaster oven. Everything was scrupulously clean. It is clear that Lisa and Charley have put a lot of love and thought into building and maintaining their home and in hosting their guests. We were invited to be as sociable or as private as we liked, but Lisa and Charley are the kind of people you want to get to know! Our 1 ½ year-old-daughter loved exploring the grounds, petting their sweet (and outdoor-only) dog and cat, watching the hen and her chicks, stacking Legos, and “playing” the piano.
A few other details: The bed was incredibly comfortable (and that is saying a lot, coming from me – due to an old back injury, I normally expect an aching back whenever I travel). The shower had fabulous water pressure and plenty of hot water, the towels were thick and cozy, there were sweet little flower arrangements in our rooms – lots of thoughtful little details.
Some travel tips: We ended up liking the natural beauty and "real Hawaii" feeling of the north (Waimea/Honoka'a) and east (Hilo) areas more than the touristy towns and beaches of the Kona side. Lisa and Charley’s home is just a few minutes from the Waipi’o Valley (where you can hike down to a black sand beach in a gorgeous valley), but it's also centrally located for trips to some great beaches to the west (Hapuna Beach was beautiful), Waimea (which was reminiscent of Northern California), and the Hilo area (which is a great town in its own right, and the launching-off point to Volcano). We had fabulous meals at the café in the Honoka’a People’s Theatre and at Pau Pizza in Waimea.
We loved our stay at Lisa and Charley’s home so much that we rearranged our travel plans in order to return for our third night on the island. It felt like coming back home.
