Property description

Welcome to the Carriage House at Dutton Hill, a four-season retreat in a serene setting a mile-and-a-half from the center of Norwich, VT and a few miles from Dartmouth College and Hanover, NH. It is a convenient location for exploring all that the Upper Valley has to offer – wonderful restaurants, theater, museums, art galleries, natural beauty and lots of outdoor fun.

The residence is on the second floor of the Carriage House. You first enter into a combined living room and dining area sunlit by many windows and an entire wall of atrium doors that open up to a large balcony overlooking rich fields, vibrant tree lines and distant mountains. It is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or an evening cocktail. The kitchen has a microwave, electric range and oven, coffee maker, refrigerator and dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, pans and basic cooking necessities.

It sleeps four comfortably in two bedrooms: there is a queen size bed in one bedroom and twin beds in the other. To make your stay more enjoyable, the apartment is infused with luxurious touches, such as French linen sheets, Australian wool comforters, lush hotel towels and high end shampoos and soaps. There is an attractive bathroom shared by both rooms that offers nice hot showers.

The carriage house is set at the top of a long beautiful lawn punctuated with ancient apple trees and a spring fed pond. Trails surround Dutton Hill providing for lots of hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, ambling and leaf peeping. The network links up with the Appalachian Trail that can also be accessed on foot. In the winter, cross country ski trails are near, downhill skiing and snowboarding a short drive as well as many other winter sports. The summers are cool and comfortable and peaceful at the Carriage House with activities steps away from the front door.

Take a night off from cooking and enjoy dinner in Norwich at Carpenter & Main, a great restaurant with a notable Chef who was Executive Chef at the four-star, four-diamond Keswick Hall resort in Virginia. If a pub experience is what you are looking for then Jasper Murdock’s – also in Norwich – is a comfortable place to have a local beer and some tasty grub. Venturing out a bit further, there are lots of restaurants in Hanover as well as shopping. Quechee, the home of Quechee Gorge and Simon Pierce are just a fifteen minute drive away and offer great views and good eats as does Woodstock, VT. White River Junction is a lot of fun too and has excellent restaurants, shops and theater. Closer by, the College at Dartmouth provides plenty of culture and entertainment as well.

The apartment is a good fit for anyone seeking a relaxing quiet atmosphere with stunning views, but it is especially ideal for parents of Dartmouth College students, Dartmouth Alumni, patients at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, relocating executives and those taking courses at King Arthur Bakery.

Having said that, families are also more than welcome. The twin room is perfect for children of all ages - far enough from Mom and Dad for privacy but close enough so that they are not afraid.

We are about three miles to King Arthur Bakery – a great stop for coffee, lunch or a casual dinner – as well as a cook’s playground.

The Montshire Museum is also very near and is a great stop for families. The Hood Museum at Dartmouth also offers programming for all ages. There is plenty to do no matter the time of year. Just get here and we’ll help you figure out the best places to visit!

Norwich is one of the towns that dot the Connecticut River in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire that make up the picturesque Upper Valley. The area is dedicated to four season outdoor adventures and sports and there are numerous of nature lovers living here. Norwich has a Norman Rockwell feel to it - a true New England town - with a Town Green, General Store, a tall steepled white Congregational Church and a pub or two- all of which are comfortably nestled into the mountains. There are lots of trails for hiking, biking, skiing, bird watching and such just a short walk from our Carriage House. In fact, the Appalachian Trail meanders through Norwich and can also be reached by foot from this vacation spot. Just across the bridge is Dartmouth College offering up lots of talent, culture, shopping and good eats. World Class theater, opera and music are all available and appreciated here. We are close to the breathtaking Quechee Gorge, to Quechee town and Simon Pearce where glass blowing demonstrations are available, as well as a fantastic restaurant. The storied town of Woodstock, Vermont is also nearby and worth a day trip. Downhill skiers and snowboarders can take advantage of the Dartmouth SKIWAY, Suicide Six, and Killington at a bit more of a distance. This area is also the location of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, a world class medical facility providing care to the region. It could be that the Upper Valley is the unofficial birthplace of the farm-to-table foodie movement as most restaurants wouldn’t think of offering anything but local, fresh ingredients. Ariana's Restaurant in Orfield, NH is a great find, as is Osteria in Woodstock, VT, and a bit closer is Carpenter & Main (just a mile away) with a Chef that hails from Keswick Hall - a 4-star, 4- diamond resort in Virginia. There are numerous craft beer breweries such as Jasper Murdock's Alehouse which is right in Norwich! Hard cider products from local orchards abound and remarkable local artisanal cheeses -that go well beyond Vermont Cheddar -are available and best sampled at the Norwich Farmers Market. The summers are cool and comfortable offering golfing, sight-seeing, hiking, swimming and all sorts of camps. Autumn is breathtakingly beautiful and hiking, cycling and just plain old leaf peeping are actively pursued. Winter brings a quiet serenity to the landscape, but it is equally active with folks enjoying downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, skating, snow shoeing, snow mobiling and other winter sports. It is a friendly, relaxed place that offers up the best of what Mother Nature provides. Having said all of that, the greatest thing that the Carriage House at Dutton Hill offers is the view. When you take in the vista all the anxiety of life just melts away, your shoulders relax, you inhale deeply and you enjoy.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2014

About the owner: After my husband retired from the military, we moved to Norwich, VT. He hails from New England and attended Norwich University so he was familiar with the area. As for me, I just spent the last quarter century living in Old Town, Alexandria working as a journalist - I didn't know what I was getting into. Well, I have to say, it is the most beautiful place I have ever lived. We are delighted to share it with visitors to our Carriage House.

Why the Owner Chose Norwich, VT, USA:
The setting is what sold this property to us. Each time we stepped onto the property and took in the view all our anxiety slipped away. It is just a really relaxing, pretty place. The Carriage House has an even better view than the main residence. We often enjoy evening cocktails on the balcony of the apartment when it isn't occupied, of course!
