About sheldon schiebe
We are Sheldon and Mary, the proud owners of Elbow Lake Lodge on beautiful Big Elbow Lake. Since 2007 we have owned and managed Knotty Pines Resort, a 11 cabin resort with a campground on Boulder Lake in the Park Rapids area (approx. 45 miles from the Lodge). We hope that families will come and enjoy Elbow Lake Lodge as much as they have our resort. We would like to share this beautiful Lodge, and look forward to meeting new guests and making new friends. As the parents of five children and thirteen grand children, we can think of no better place to make those special family memories than at the lake.

Why sheldon schiebe chose Waubun
This property holds special memories for Sheldon as he started vacationing on Big Elbow with his family in the late 50's. Sheldon also has three cousins on the lake . Elbow Lake Lodge is a log sided cabin built in 1939 and is one of the first cabins on the lake. It was used as a cabin and hunting lodge over the years and has a historic, cozy stone fireplace. The peaceful north-woods ambiance as you drive on to the property. The lake view is very beautiful from the great room, deck and from the expansive wrap around enclosed porch. The setting is very private, surrounded by 11 acres and very little development. Big Elbow Lake is a gorgeous and scenic 1100 acre lake with good fishing, crystal clear water and many sets of loons to serenade you at night. We are confident that you and your family will enjoy the peace and quiet at Elbow Lake Lodge situated on 250' of private lake shore set in the big pines.

Perfect summer getaway
We had a terrific time! The cabin is great to cozy up in, even if it’s raining. There are enough separate spaces indoor and outdoors so that we could hang out and be apart when needed. We maxed out the cabin occupancy and were still comfy but it was cozy. Lots of fans are provided, but bringing a noise machine helped in the large bunk room.
Took a day-trip to Itasca and had a great time. We went in the park at the north entrance ($7 cash per car) and stopped at all the cool things to see on our way down to Douglas Lodge where we had dinner. Only saw a tiny part of the park, but we all enjoyed it.
Pontoon rental was great. Caught lots of crappies, sunnies, and perch, and even crayfish! Saw so many loons and even an otter on the dock at night!
Kids loved playing on the sandy beach, and we all made s’mores in the evenings.
One fridge and a bev fridge were good but we had lots of people, so only brought food for the first half of the week and got more groceries after visiting Itasca when we had more space in the fridge.
The washer and dryer were also awesome to have, especially with wet swimsuits and towels!
The owner (Sheldon) is very easy to work with.
It was a perfect week getaway!
Thank you for the nice comments and so happy your family had such a wonderful time. It is a special place and we are happy we can share it with you. Hope you can stay with us again. Thank you, Sheldon and Mary
Exactly as pictured! All the basics you need for a great Up North cabin experience!
We had an excellent stay at Sheldon and Mary’s beautiful lake home. The pictures provided represented exactly what we were expecting. All the basics, a no-frills, northern cabin home. Our group of 4 adults and 4 kids ages four and under had a fabulous time enjoying the sandy beach area, the open and hilly yard, awesome sunny fishing off the dock and around the lake, and picturesque sunsets and campfires right by the crystal clear water. There was ample seating for our group inside and out which made for enjoyable meals together. There was plenty of space for all of us to sleep well and the box fans provided helped to keep us nice and cool most nights. Sheldon was easy to contact and had both the basic pontoon and simple fishing boat available for us right away. We enjoyed a quick boat cruise over to Be Jolly resort on the lake for ice cream sandwiches and pizza as well. Itasca State Park was worth the 35ish minute drive to see the headwaters and explore the park on foot and by bike. Be sure to bring your own kitchen, bathroom, and beach towels and toiletries/dish soap/laundry soap, and charcoal for the grill as none are provided. Overall, it was a fantastic week we all enjoyed, and have memories together to last us a lifetime. Thank you, Sheldon and Mary, for sharing your wonderful place with us!
Wonderful Hosts, Peaceful atmosphere
A group of 11 women traveled together to this location to volunteer at an animal spay and neuter clinic on the reservation. This cabin was conveniently located just a few miles from the Rediscovery Center in Waubun where we were centered. We drove up from the twin cities, and it was a solid 4 hour drive. Sheldon met me there to tour the cabin, and was a gracious host.
The cabin is NOT air conditioned, but ample room fans were provided (a few for each room) and although it was 85 degrees outside, it stayed cool inside the cabin until we cooked. :) The lake itself is gorgeous and clear, it was fun just sitting on the dock watching the fish. We used the little paddle boat provided, and enjoyed watching loons and eagles! It would be a great fishing lake because it's quiet, clear and there were abundant fish. The deer flies were quite thick throughout the day, but I actually never got bit. We had beds for everyone, and space for 2 large blow up beds on the porch as well. Everything was very clean even though it's an older cabin and has a kitchy, vintage feel to it.
Words to the wise: Bring your own towels (bath and hand), Verizon has decent coverage AT the home, AT&T has ok coverage, but go two miles away and have NONE. There is only ONE gas station/store/bait shop/restaurant in the area, and the owners are delightful, but if you're looking to eat out for dinner, you will be driving 20-30 miles. If you forget your beer, you'll be limited to coors light at the store, or driving 30 miles. Bring bug spray. Bring some board games. There are bears in the area. Actually.
We LOVED our time at this cabin, and hope to stay again for our next clinic.
Great cabin great lake
Our group of 7 rented this cabin for 3 days for a fishing trip. The lake was very quiet and beautiful. The property was well maintained. Don’t forget to bring towels. The horse flies were aggressive near shore but were not bad on the lake. We caught a lot of fish. We even caught a 30 inch walleye on the lake to the south that elbow lake connects to (Little Bemidji lake). You can drive a boat through the shallow channel to travel between the lakes. The resort on Little bemidji lake (rainbow resort) also sells bait if you just pull up to their dock and walk up to the office. We also happened to know the neighbors which was nice to catch up with them. Everything was great and all the guys agreed they would like to come back.
Thank you for staying with us and your nice review, hope you can return to enjoy our property.
Great location, great owner.
The wife and I took our 6 & 1 year old girls to the cabin for four nights. We rented the pontoon boat that is available and loved every minute of it. We even decided to stay an extra night! We caught good panfish and used the fish cleaning table at the house. The girls absolutely loved the sandy beach area. We were treated to many birds of prey fishing in front of us and the haunting calls of the loons at night. Just an overall wonderful time. The cabin is also a short drive to the Mississippi headwaters which was a nice little trip as well. Highly recommend the cabin.
Turn key. Ready for fishing and water fun!
The owner has thought of everything to make your stay convenient, comfortable, and fun. Water toys, fire pit, pontoon, fish cleaning station, relaxing sun room. Its on a quiet lake on a private lot. We so enjoyed our stay and sheldon is the best! Thank you so much!
We are located in the beautiful forested area with Itasca State Park and North Country Hiking trail within a short drive on scenic Highway 113. Enjoy the active wildlife in the wooded area. Great fishing on Big Elbow Lake and just a few miles from Bad Medicine Lake, known throughout Minnesota for it's lake trout.
