About the property

LEARN. HIKE. FARM. FISH. RELAX. AHHH...

The Abbott Cottage is a perfect home away from home. Located beside the farmhouse, in the midst of the action on our working farm, there's always something to do or see - unless you'd just like to camp out on the front porch swing for the day! OR, if you are looking for seclusion, check out our tiny house listings (Azalea Creek Tiny House and Fern Creek Tiny House).

As for the cottage, it has 3 bedrooms that sleep 8 MAX. Please do not ask us to allow extra guests. The first bedroom has a double bed and full bath. The second has a double bed and full bath, with an antique footed tub and shower. The third is set up for kids (or adults), with two sets of twin bunk beds. There's a living/dining room and a full kitchen, with extra eating space on the back porch. A washer, dryer and ironing board are out there too. The cottage has a few toys (mostly for younger kids), plus books, games and vintage movies. Located in beautiful Oconee Co, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are trails and waterfalls galore. World class trout fishing, wild river rafting and fabulous mountain music are less than 30 minutes away. Come see for yourself, you'll love it here!

About OWNERREZCOTT

We are Bill & Mary McGinn. We're retirees who have taken up farming for a living. Our property was originally bought by Bill's great-great grandfather, just after the Civil War. Then it was sold sometime in the early 1900s. Its a rare privilege to have the farm back in the family and to call this special place home.

OWNERREZCOTT purchased this cottage in 2012

Why OWNERREZCOTT chose Hartwell Lake

We not only wanted to won family property, but also to find a viable farm. We are dedicated to providing a safe, sustainable environment for our grown children and their children. Yes, it's lots of hard work, but it's so worth it!

What makes this cottage unique

The benefits for us are numerous, such as physically being in the best shape we've been in for years. No more sedentary lifestyle here! Benefits for our guests are many as well; a chance to experience a real working farm, a place to remove yourself from the rat race, a central location for so many of our areas attractions, etc!

Fantastic Stay in Beautiful Surroundings!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from four nights at this cottage. The purpose of our trip was to hike with our dogs and the cottage location was accessible to many amazing waterfall hikes. There was no way to conquer them all but we gave it a good try.

Bill greeted us upon arrival and every time that we returned for the day. He made sure we had everything we needed and we did.

The cottage is on a working farm but we were not aware of excess noise unless you consider a howling coyote or cow in the distance to be excess noise. It was very peaceful and we capped off each night by sitting in the rocking chairs on the front porch snuggled up in a blanket.

Ponder, the local "furball" mayor of the homestead made sure to uphold his reputation and hung out with us every evening on the porch. He is a such a sweet dog and we will miss him greatly!

Overall, we found the cottage to be cozy and clean and we had no issues. We would definitely come back again and would have no hesitation recommending this to other travelers.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! The kids loved milking the goats! Our only problem was that we had to leave... we will have to stay longer next time!

A wonderful stay

What a great weekend! My husband and I brought our mothers with us for a beautiful weekend. Bill and Mary are very accommodating. The space inside and out is wonderful coupled with a lovely front porch swing. We enjoyed this place and will be back.

Lovely spot with kind hosts

  • 5 of 5

Bill and Mary could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Ponder was a highlight too. The cottage was clean and had everything you needed. One complaint was the lack of Internet and tv channels, but who needs that when you are trying to get away? The only other problem was that the kids had to go through our bedroom to use the bathroom. We had a great time and would be happy to return. We had no issue with the proximity to the farm house, in fact we liked it. Thank you Bill and Mary for a lovely stay.

Excellent place to be in Clemson/Greenville area and avoid crowds with a pleasant "farm" stay.

The cottage was pleasant and the people and environment were wonderful. A great change from a hotel and a nice break from the everyday business of life. If you enjoy a simpler perspective then I strongly recommend this home.

This is a wonderful family vacation cottage, very affordable in the beautiful in S.C. mountains.

We had an absolutely wonderful time for two entire weeks. Mary and Bill could not have been nicer.

They even helped us to bring our bags in from the car when we arrived.

The home was immaculate and the kitchen well stocked.

Beautiful washer and dryer with clothes line on the enclosed back porch with iron and ironing board.

The front porch, enclosed with railings for the little ones, had comfortable rocking chairs and even a porch swing.

You can enjoy the peace and quiet or watch the cows and chickens while you relax with some iced tea.

No doubt you will be visited by Ponder who is a wonderful sweet-natured dog who loves children.

Keep plenty of dog biscuits near by and he will sit with you on the porch

The two bedrooms with double beds each had their own bathroom and one even had an old fashioned

claw-foot tub. The third bedroom is perfect for kids, two bunk beds and plenty of toys.

Although this lovely little cottage did not have central air, both adult bedrooms and the living room had a/c which

kept it cool enough on summer days with temps in the 80's.

The living room also has a wood burning stove which would be wonderful on crisp fall evenings.

During the daytime it is a beautiful area for hiking, picnics, swimming and all sorts of summer fun.

There are several very good restaurants and shopping centers within a 15 minute drive.

Anything you could possibly want, just ask Bill or Mary for the local information.

This is a perfect place for kids 3 to 9 or 10. They can gather eggs, feed chickens and help milk goats.

Then you can end the day with a wonderful hayride around the farm passing by cows and horses.

Also, ask Bill to also show you the "tiny houses" that he has built on the property...amazing.

This is a terrific family or couple getaway and the price is extremely affordable for all of the

wonderful hospitality and farm adventures that await. Thank you Bill, Mary (and Debbie) for everything !!!

As we've mentioned, this is a great area to visit. The farm is located in a rural setting, between Westminster and Walhalla, SC. There's not only beautiful scenery, but plenty of local flavor to enjoy. The people are friendly to a fault and the pace is definitely slower. We have learned, though, not to stereotype folks around here. That redneck hillbilly on his old tractor, just might be a world famous writer or a professor with degrees an arm long. So come with your mind set to relax and savor. You won't be disappointed.
