About the Property

Learn Sustainable Farming, Hike to Waterfalls or Hear Fabulous Bluegrass Music

The Abbott Cottage is a perfect home away from home. Located beside the farmhouse, in the midst of the action on our working farm, there's always something to do or see - unless you'd just like to camp out on the front porch swing for the day! OR, if you are looking for seclusion, check out our TINY HOUSE IN THE WOODS listing.
As for the cottage, it has 3 bedrooms that sleep 8 MAX. Please do not ask us to allow extra guests. The first bedroom has a double bed and full bath. The second has a double bed and full bath, with an antique footed tub and shower. The third is set up for kids, with two sets of twin bunk beds. There's a living/dining room and a full kitchen, with extra eating space on the back porch. A washer, dryer and ironing board are out there too. The cottage is stocked with toys, books, games, puzzles and vintage movies. Located in beautiful Oconee Co, there are trails and waterfalls galore. World class trout fishing, wild river rafting, high canopy zipline tours and fabulous mountain music are less than 30 minutes away. Come on y'all!

We live in what's called the 'Golden Corner' of South Carolina, named both for the beauty of the autumn leaves and for the value that folks place on this wonderful area. Starting with the lovely view of the red barn out across our back pasture, there are wondrous sights to see almost everywhere you turn. The people here are special too, with their laid back attitudes and welcoming words to any stranger. And the food is outstanding! From down home cooking at Yousef's Kitchen in Westminster, up to Chattooga Belle's restaurant at the top of the mountain, there's no way not to be delighted. Then there's the music. My oh my, it is too wonderful for words. Bluegrass traditions just seep out of the ground here and the local talent is truly amazing. Westminster even has a Music Hall, with events every weekend and often on weeknights too. And history, well that's our thing. We've yet to run out of places, people and historical happenings to explore. So come on y'all. You'll love it here!

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2012

About the owner: We are Bill & Mary McGinn. We're retirees who have taken up farming for a living. Our property belonged to Bill's great-great grandfather, just after the Civil War. Its a rare privilege to have the farm back in the family and to call it home. We grow heirloom fruits and veggies, grind gluten free grains and make useful wooden items - to sell (in season) at our farmstand. Plus Mary cans, dehydrates and cures about anything that will stand still long enough! Our livestock are heritage breeds that we allow to live as naturally as possible. Currently, we have beef cows, chickens, dairy goats and draft horses. The horses pull our Amish wagon, as well as plows and such. We obviously love old things - including each other:)

Why the Owner Chose Westminster, SC, USA:
Besides the family history of owning the farm, we were looking for property in a location that would be safe for our family, if things in this country go badly. This area provides that and, in addition, we have lots of cousins nearby.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Lots of folks are interested in farming, prepping, canning, solar, etc. these days. We're open to sharing what we have learned and teaching others who are interested. Plus we just offer a peaceful place that appeals to people who live in the usual rat race of life. Thus Far Farm is in a different time warp than most of the rest of the country. Our newest venture is adding platform tents, RV sites and tiny houses for rent on the farm. Then we can even have groups come for retreats.
