Nestled in three acres of Aspen forest, our new custom mountain getaway is a perfect home base for exploring the Rockies. This is where modern convenience meets rustic charm. Each of the three bedrooms has it's own bathroom. With the pull out sofa in the media room, our home can sleep up to 6 people comfortably. You can use wireless Internet to stay connected; or pretend it's not there and enjoy the solitude.
Located in the heart of the South Park National Heritage area, you’ll be close to the natural, historical and cultural wonders of the Rockies. During the summer, amazing hiking trails and fishing are nearby, as well as four-wheel drive trails for off-roading. Even if you just have a two-wheel drive car you have plenty of options.
For example, you can take a trip through the historic 18th Century railroad town of Como on your way to Boreas Pass, taking in the breathtaking views above tree line before descending into the historic mountain resort town of Breckenridge. Eat, drink and shop to your heart’s content before returning over Hoosier Pass and through the quaint historic towns of Alma and Fairplay before heading home. During the winter, the local trails are great for cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Or you can drive to Breckenridge in about an hour for world class skiing and snowboarding.
When you're home, you'll feel like you're truly in an Aspen Tree House, especially on our huge wrap-around deck .... a great place for entertaining! Or snuggle in front of a roaring fire with a good book. (But don't forget to look up once in a while to take in the view of the continental divide!)
Cook up a gourmet dinner on our Blue Star gas range, or nuke a snack in the microwave. And help yourself to the spices and condiments. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots, pans, dishes, silverware ... all the things you need to make preparation and eating quite civilized. (The dishwasher makes cleanup easy.)
You can pass the time the old-fashioned way playing cards or one of our many old-fashioned board games. Or you can watch a 3-D Blue-ray movie or catch a classic Netflix movie on our 60” flat-screen TV on the media room.
If it’s a clear night, be sure to go outside and check out the stars. They’re simply amazing at 10,000 feet above sea level! When you're ready to turn in, snuggle into one of our comfy beds (We have two king-sized beds, a trundle bed that can be configured as two twins or a king, and a queen-sized sleeper sofa.) Then wake up to another glorious morning at the Aspen Tree House.
Throughout the year, you won't see many people on Michigan Hill, but those you do meet are quite friendly. Most of the full-time residents are the deer, elk, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, coyotes, etc. And they pretty much keep to themselves!
The Aspen Treehouse is just a 90 minute drive from downtown Denver along scenic highway 285. Unless you come in the winter, when four-wheel drive is advisable, any vehicle will do. Once you're there you can get around by vehicle, foot or mountain bike. During the winter, you can add cross-country skis, snowshoes or one of our two sleds to your modes of transport.
This is a very special place to us, and we take great pleasure in sharing it with others. We expect our guests to respect the care and love we have put into our mountain home.
Tom and Mary Dudzinski live in Denver (when we're not at our mountain home). Tom produces video and multimedia programs for educational and non-profit organizations. He also plays drums in a variety of bands. Mary is recently retired from the State of Colorado and is quite busy pursuing her many interests, including sewing, crafts, singing, photography and cooking. We are very fortunate to have our grown children nearby, and enjoy spending time with family and our very special friends both in Denver and on Michigan Hill. We also enjoy traveling ... in Colorado, across the U.S. and around the world.
Tom and Mary Dudzinski purchased this house in 2011
Since we moved to Denver in 1979, we had dreams of owning our own place in the mountains. We spent many years camping and hiking throughout Colorado, and fell in love with South Park. It's only 90 minutes from Denver, but it feels like an eternity from the city. For us it is the perfect combination of having a true mountain rural experience without the severe isolation. We don't have the traffic and commercialization of the resorts, but when we're up for it, the action is just a short drive away.
In 1997, we bought our lot on Michigan Hill, and for 10 years played with ideas and designs for our dream home. In 2007 construction began. It took us nearly five years to get it to where it is now. It has truly been a labor of love. While we had a fabulous contractor doing most of the major work (we wanted to make sure it was done right!), we did a good amount of the work ourselves ... including harvesting and finishing the aspen logs from our property, which became the posts, beams, railings and trim elements throughout the interior of our house. We also wanted an efficient and sustainable home, which is why we paid a lot of attention to construction techniques, insulation, windows and other maintenance free details. And with three acres of aspen, we rely on that sustainable energy source to provide the primary heating for the house.
The Aspen Tree House was a wonderful place to stay!
The fall colors were incredible--yellow and orange--and it was so great to be in a home enclosed by trees. You could sit on the porch and watch the aspens quake for hours.
The wildlife around the home made for enjoyable night time strolls; we found elk every night, and could hear them bugling to each other, one of us even saw two bull moose.
The fireplace warmed the house up nicely, the beds were cozy, and the kitchen had everything we needed to hole up in the woods for a long weekend.
Tom was very responsive and helpful to us as we planned our stay. Thank you for allowing us to rent the Aspen Tree House for a great weekend!
We spent a month at the Aspen Tree House this summer and had a delightful stay. We are a retired couple with a small terrier and the house was perfect for our time in the mountains. The kitchen was well stocked and well equipped, the beds were comfortable and the furniture, equipment, etc. was all top-of-the-line. There was obviously much care and attention paid to the construction and design of everything. We especially liked relaxing on the deck watching the birds and listening to the aspen leaves rustle.
The owners were very easy to deal with and helpful with information and advice. The mountain community setting was extremely peaceful---we rarely even heard a vehicle on the road below, The aspen grove setting provided much privacy, and the continental divide views from the driveway and the road below were easy on the eye. The house is well-located for mountain drives and hikes and other outdoor recreation. Also---Fairplay was only 20 minutes away for shopping and restaurants.
We hope to return someday for another stay.
Great rustic home, surrounded by mountains, plenty of room for large families. State park 2 miles away offering hiking, biking, picture taking. 1 hour to Breckenridge, for shopping and dining. We enjoyed it greatly and highly recommend it.
We just left this morning so it's fresh in my mind. Wonderful roomy mountain retreat for extended family escape. Loved the setting, quiet surrounds, yet great hiking jus 2 miles away. Work so well for us, we may come back, and would not hesitate to recommend this house. True taste of the Colorado Mountains.
Such a great little house. Four cousins meeting in Colorado for a girls getaway. We really enjoyed our weekend stay. Very clean, plenty of sleeping space and 3 1/2 baths, too. Quiet neighborhood, easy access. We enjoyed the lovely scenery and cooler summer weather. Loved sitting outside on the decks watching the birds. We did an all day whitewater raft trip on the Arkansas our first day. A long horseback ride the following day. Fell into bed exhausted each night. No one wanted to leave.
The house looks so new and well kept, fresh tile and plumbing fixtures throughout. Looks like there is a bit more work to do in the kitchen, thus the 4 star rating instead of a 5. Nothing that stopped us from cooking or using the kitchen. I'd stay again, we loved it.
Every year I have family that comes out to Colorado for a visit. This house was the tenth place we rented. Even though this was the smallest rental, it was my favorite. We had one rainy day and normally I become restless, feeling that it was a wasted day. There's something enchanting about this house that made me feel calm and content spending all day inside. I highly recommend this rental.
