This beautiful apartment is in a 16th century former monastery right in the centre of the Centro Historico. It's a peaceful enclave (where you can't hear any traffic) just 50 yards from Plaza Santa Domingo and less than five minutes walk from the Zocalo - the main central square.
This apartment contains a magnificent stone arch originally constructed by the monastery in the sixteen hundreds.
The apartment has been beautifully restored with original stripped wood floors and colour washed plaster walls and is on the first floor of the building which is arranged around a courtyard. Most of the residents of the 30 apartments are Mexican families so you will get a real flavour of life in Mexico City. The first floor is reached by a flight of wide stairs.
The bedrooms look onto the main central courtyard.
Kitchen/dining room - fridge/freezer, small cooker, sink tiled with hand-made tiles and coffee maker. Hand-made table and chairs to seat six.
Sitting room/lounge - sofa, hand made desk, chairs, small television & DVD player and Wifi.
Bedroom 1 - Double bed.
Bedroom 2 - Single bed.
Bathroom - Wet room with shower, toilet & marble wash-basin.
Sarah Tisdall and Arturo Reyes. We are both artists. Arturo has a degree from San Carlos in Mexico City and Sarah has a degree from The Slade School, University College London UK. We moved here 6 years ago from London. We enjoy the vivacity of the City and the beautiful old buildings in this area and the creativity shown by the Mexican Craftsmen in various disciplines. The climate is near perfect and it is easy to travel round the country from here.
Arturo Reyes purchased this apartment in 2012
We like this ancient block of apartments and purchased one in addition to ours. We enjoy the vivacity of the City and the beautiful old buildings in this area and the creativity shown by the Mexican craftsmen in various disciplines. The climate is near perfect and it is easy to travel round the country from here.
Beautiful area which is being refurbished. Three blocks from the Zocalo, many beautiful buildings round about, an outlook towards Santo Domingo Church. Easy walking distance to many historic sites such as Templo Mayor, The Cathedral, San Ildefonso Museum, Museo Nacional de Arte, Palacio de Bellas Artes. Three metro stations within easy walking: Zocalo, Allende y Lagunilla. Taxis easily available very reasonably priced. Sunday cycling with free bike rentals on cleared streets in the Historical Centre. Plaza Santo Doming Cafe and good Mexican food at Hosteria Santo Domingo. The location is popular with film makers, most notably Denzil Washington in Man of Fire, Dennis Quaid and Forest Whitaker in Vantage Point. TV also like to use it for soaps and adds. Frequently other entertainers use the Plaza, for example music and dancers, and equestrian events from time to time.
It was a wonderful experience and we stood there for 9 days. Arturo and Sarah are wonderful and very interesting people and artists. (You should visit their private museum that is located in the same building). Arturo is very pleasant and welcoming person, always ready to help. We were picked up from airport and taken back. Apartment is great, well decorated and comfortable, located right in the middle of Centro Historico, and you would be able to walk almost everywhere or just take a taxi, it's not expensive. You can cook, if you want to, we did, the market is not far, walking distance. It's just 2 things about this place. The inner yard of this building is very loud and life starts early, so if you are a light sleeper, like me, take your earplugs with you, it helps. Second, the water some times is a problem( sometimes early morning or late at night). But at the same time, what can you expect from 16th century construction. Otherwise, it's a very good and nice place to stay in Mexico City and enjoy every bit of it. Would recommend this place to these who want to explore a little bit of local life, have a freedom and extra space, feel independent but safe.
I just now realized that I have stayed in this apartment on numerous occasions but have never left a review! Arturo and Sarah's apartment in this vecindad is a jewel of a place with shutters on the bedroom windows that block out the world for a great night's sleep. The arch that bisects the great room is a "pecho de paloma" stone structure that takes you back in time when you curl up on the couch for a good read or a movie. This place will work for the adventurous first time Mexico City visitor or for those who are just in love with the city and need to return often. The neighbor ladies look out for you, it is totally safe and is 100% Mexican. Arturo, the owner and artist, lives on the next floor up and is always available to solve all of your problems, answer questions and lend you a bottle of wine when you run out.
If I had my way, I would just live there instead of in San Antonio, Texas. Susie Flores
