About Nigel Cushing

We live in Seattle but have visited a family place on Guemes Island for 30 years. We love spending time with family and friends in this lovely place. The weather (fair or stormy), the boat traffic, beach walks to a nearby nature preserve, biking on low traffic roads--it's a step back into a time when life was slower and simpler. Guemes Island is much easier to reach than the popular San Juans, which are served by the Washington State Ferry. Our little Skagit County ferry makes getting here a breeze--just 2 hours door-to-door from Seattle, 3 hours from Vancouver, B.C.

Nigel Cushing purchased this house in 2013

Why Nigel Cushing chose Anacortes

We looked all over the island in 2012 and 2013 before realizing we really wanted a location close to the ferry and maritime traffic. We also like 'fixing up' homes that need TLC. This house is almost unrecognizable from what we found;, we kept the character but brought it back to life. It's what a real beach house should look like!

What makes this house unique

Guemes is so accessible! It's an island but not TOO far--only 80 miles from Seattle, 94 from Vancouver, B.C. A charming island to tour by bicycle, with bucolic discoveries around every turn. Kayakers can launch nearby to explore the many islands and coves. A hike up Guemes Mountain (more a steep hill than an Alp!) rewards with panoramic views of the nearby San Juans. Summertime brings community activities that will take you back to your childhood. Enjoy a campfire on the beach, bocce ball or badminton on our expansive grassy beachfront.

Nearest Airport
30 Miles
Bellingham or Seattle.
Car: not necessary

Guemes island is just an 8 minute Ferry Ride from Anacortes. Anacortes is just over an hour's drive from Seattle or Vancouver BC. It has Whale Watching Tours, Antiques, Kayak Tours, Boat Charters, Farmers Market, and lots of fun special events. There are restaurants, bars, cinema. Of course, theres nothing better than reading a book at the Beach House and taking it easy.

Low-bank Waterfront with SANDY BEACH. Beach is great for kids, and for grown ups watching the boats and ferry go by on Guemes Channel. We provide lawn games and gorgeous setting. Ferry is close if you want to go into Anacortes for night life, antique shopping or restaurants. Guemes has great biking with relatively flat and quiet roads. There is a mountain hike a few miles away. Walk the beach in front of the house. A perfect week in a wonderful house with a lovely, ever-changing view on Guemes Island

  • 5 of 5

This was our tenth annual week-long family get-together, each in a different place, and this house and location suited all of us perfectly. We are a group of seven: two daughters and sons-in-law and an 11-year-old granddaughter, and there were excellent (if sometimes different) activities for all. On the small island itself there's a mountain to climb for great views, and quiet roads to drive, bicycle, or walk. The "general store" (something of a misnomer, since it's really more of a restaurant, though it does offer some staples, including a fine beer selection) provided us all with an excellent dinner with musical accompaniment. It's adjacent to the ferry landing and thus just a five-minute walk from the house. We all enjoyed strolls on the beach, and in a nearly nature preserve. And we all enjoyed the house itself.

Best of all was the commodious deck with plenty of chairs, a sail-like shade that could be hoisted, and an up close and personal view of Guemes Channel, with its recreational and commercial traffic. The ferry's typically half-hourly 5-minute crossings to and from Anacortes became the pulse of our visits, keeping us company as we read or took our meals. Perhaps surprisingly, the ferry crossing was less of a nuisance than an aspect of the house's -- and our stay's -- uniqueness.

Downtown Anacortes was walkable from the ferry and offered a weekly farmers' market where we all had lunch, plus whale watches, kayak rentals, parks, and a maritime museum, all of which we enjoyed, singly or in various groups.

We were lucky with the weather, but when we were forced inside the great room was a comfortable alternative to the deck, with similar views. The fully equipped kitchen allowed us to prepare good meals.

The owners provided excellent suggestions for activities, much appreciated, which helped us make the most of our week.

Beautiful home, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house, very comfortable, with everything we needed, in a great location. We hope to visit again next summer! My criticism is of VRBO: once you book the rental, it is difficult to get information like directions to the property, instructions for arrival and departure, etc. We used the app and expected it to be more helpful. The owner is accessible, luckily, because VRBO is not.

Great beachfront home!

  • 4 of 5

Great home, beautiful view, and so conveniently close to the ferry! We enjoyed exploring Guemes Island, Anacortes, Deception Pass, Friday Harbor, and LaConner from here. Well stocked kitchen. Water supply was an issue.

A Wonderful Escape!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Following a brief ferry ride (5 to 7 minutes) we arrived on Quemes Island. In another few minutes we were at our destination. The house is designed for both group socializing and individual privacy. The kitchen is fabulous and fully stocked with whatever you need! The bedrooms are beautifully appointed with very comfortable beds.

The view from the deck is wonderful. The lawn is great for a lively game of bolo!!! The roads and trails around the island are wonderful for biking and hiking.

We would strongly recommend this lovely property and definitely return!!!!!!

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We've had the pleasure of staying at this charming house twice now - what a treat! The house could not be more conveniently located near the ferry terminal and the opportunity to see the harbor activity from the deck and the expansive lawn can't be beat. We've stayed with kids under 5 on one occasion and there is plenty of room for 2-3 families both inside the house and outside. We flew kites, dug in the sand, and roamed the beach for treasures. The island is small and we were able to take short car rides to explore other areas. The house is well stocked and very comfortable - you won't want to leave! Have also rented this home with a group of girlfriends and everyone agreed it was the perfect relaxation getaway. We look forward to renting it again soon!

Great location!

  • 5 of 5

This house is a two minute walk from the ferry dock so no need to take your car across. Right on the beach! We loved watching the boats go by and walking the long gravel beach out to the point.

Gourmet kitchen. Pretty much any good quality utensil, pan or knife is there.

Nice bedding.

The little store and restaurant at the ferry has loaner bikes. You can ride 2 miles to the base of Guemes mountain and hike

to the top for a 360 degree view of the San Juans. We brought our own bikes and rode all around the island on the quiet roads.

Very nice house. quite comfortable for 3 couples.
