About the property

Experience "the land of eternal spring" - Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

At Lake Atitlan, you will find a comfortable, balmy year-round climate which has been described as partly tropical, yet cool at night. Casa Palo Jiote, on a mountainside over-looking the lake, is a newly-constructed three bedroom home with three bathrooms, high-end bedding and linens, modern kitchen and laundry, lots of windows and light, and ample decking for entertaining or relaxing outside.

Easy access to the lake from the house is provided by way of the private serpentine pathway that links the road (above the house) to the house, and then on down to the lake. If you do become tired, rest areas are provided on the grassy terraces.

Public boats (known as lanchas) pass the dock periodically throughout the day. Just wave from the dock, and the boat will gladly pick you up and later return you. Private boat transportation is also available, if you prefer to set your own schedule.

Activities at Lake Atitlan are varied, from guided adventure tours to mountain climbing to kayaking and zip-lining. You're sure to find what suits you, even if its a leisurely walk or a relaxing read (or snooze!) in a colorful hammock. Whether you seek adventure or cultural pursuits, there are experienced local guides and tourist agencies located in Panajachel to assist you. Or, simply board a lancha or arrange a private boat to be yours for the day.

A favorite activity of mine is exploring the native villages alongside the lake. Each is unique in its history, language, customs, and dress The artists' village of San Juan is a great place to view some of the best oil painting done at the lake. These families take pride in their work and are pleased to meet with you and talk about their art. Examples of lake art adorn the walls of Case Palo Jiote and include some tapestry pieces, as well. Enjoy!

About Sheila Howard

Not just the temperate climate, but also the friendly faces enticed us to return to Lake Atitlan again and again. At last, we were able to build a house of our own on a beautiful mountainside, over-looking the lake, near the village of San Marcos la Laguna. Now, we look forward to being here even more, and also to welcoming visitors and guests to experience the beauty and ambiance of Casa Palo Jiote, the terraced gardens, and our private lakefront. Enjoy the magnificent volcanoes, the song of the birds, and the tranquility of life here. Bienvenidos!

Why Sheila Howard chose Pasajcap

After visiting Guatemala and Lake Atitlan on vacation to Central America, we always enjoyed the scenic beauty of the lake area, its charisma, and the somewhat reserved, but smiling, friendly people.

What makes this house unique

Casa Palo Jiote is a dream come true for us. From the original house design, through many changes and additions,, we have ended up with a lovely, warm and welcoming home. We are often asked, "was it worth all the trouble?" And the answer is always, yes. Look out the windows, feel the cool night air, listen to the morning sounds, and best of all, that incredible view from the Master suite when you feel surrounded by stars, some big, some small, and knowing how special it all is.

My husband and I stayed at this amazing house for a week. I wish we could have moved in. Everything about our stay was fantastic. The house is very well-equipped. Everything, and I mean everything is high-end, especially the kitchen. The kitchen was so nice, I cooked every single night.

The house has high-end linens, a great washing machine and dryer, and other modern amenities. And the master bedroom mattress was simply amazing. We woke up every morning well-rested and super happy. The house has magical views of the lake from almost every room, another big plus. It was simply breathtaking. We can't wait to come back!

There are two additional things I want to mention:

1. The house is not suitable for people with mobility issues. There were 50 steep steps to tackle going up from the private dock to the house. There were another 100 steps going up to the main road. It's a lot of steps. There were railings and places to stop so it wasn't that hard, but if you have mobility issues, this house would be a bad choice.

2. The house is somewhat isolated. It's a 20 minute walk to the main town of San Marcos, or a short five minute boat ride. But in the evenings, it would be hard to get back to the house from town, even by taking a tuk-tuk. If you are looking for any type of night life, this is not the house for you to book. We ended up staying home every night because I had concerns about coming back from town late at night. But we didn't care because we were so blissed out staying in the house!

If you want total peace and tranquility, this is the place to stay. The owner has done an amazing job creating a beautiful and very functional house. Book it! Book it! Book it!

I wrote a blog post about our time around the lake in San Marcos.

If you want to read more about our lake adventures, I have a blog on WordPress. Type "believeitohrnot". VRBO won't allow me to publish the link.

Owner's Response: As a writer and an owner of Casa Palo Jiote, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, I always appreciate our guests reviews, both pro and con. This enables us to consider improvements for our guest's comfort and enjoyment while visiting this beautiful lake. Yes, there are steps leading up from the lake to the house, and other steps going from the house to the road above. Hand railings are in place, also. As mentioned in the review, we have prepared resting places (benches) along the way where one can sit, enjoy the amazing views over the lake, and inhale the fragrances from flowers on the terraces, so carefully tended by our skilled gardeners. This property does not offer handicap assistance. The house is located near the small village of San Marcos la Laguna -- app. 15-20 minute walk, or a quick tuk-tuk ride. Just far enough away for privacy and quiet enjoyment. San Marcos is a typical native village that some visitors consider to be a spiritual retreat. In the mornings, one can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables there. Casa Palo Jiote, built on the side of the mountain, has magnificent lake views and cooling breezes, plus ample lakefront area with a private dock for swimming and transport around the lake. When choosing to purchase and build a vacation home in Guatemala, Lake Atitlan was first on the list of possibilities. With a working knowledge of Spanish and having enjoyed many visits to the area, it was easy to imagine even more exciting adventures, as well as restful moments, in this "land of eternal Spring." The land, the climate, the amazingly diverse and colorful people, combine to offer the visitor a myriad of options from which to fashion a different kind of vacation. I bet you will want to return. . . Bienvenidos Todos, Sheila and D.J.

Beautiful home with Amazing Views

  • 5 of 5

Along with two other couples, we loved our visit to the lake! The home is very well equipped and has views from every area of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. The owners and caretakers are very responsive and help make you feel right at home. A great place to call home for a few nights or a few weeks!

Private with Amazing Views!!!!! A+++

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying in Casa Palo Jiote for one week and everything was absolutely perfect. There were five adults in our group. The home is open, spacious and has the modern amenities that we are used to. The beds are comfortable and the views are absolutely amazing! There is a private dock which is a plus when traveling by boat taxi (lanchas). The stairs up to the home from the dock are neatly designed with pleasant views of the gardens on the walk up. Same for the stairs that go up to the village. There are a few benches on the path to the door at the top of the stairs that you can sit down and soak in the beauty of volcanoes surrounding Lake Atitlan. The village is a nice 20 to 30 minute walk, depending how fast you walk. We enjoyed taking our time and strolling to the village. During your walk to the village you will experience new and exciting sights. You will see Mayas working on nearby homes, or just walking by carrying loads of wood or sticks on their heads or back. Children playing in the street. Tuk-Tuk's passing by. One day we got to experience a Mayan wedding during one of our trips to the village. There is also a Mayan restaurant that offers pizza in the village. We went inside to check it out and there was a big rooster jumping around on the tables while a couple was enjoying their meal at another table. I looked around for the owner, who came from behind the colorful Mayan curtain and who was an older lady with salt and pepper hair put up in a bun wearing typical Mayan clothing. We decided not to eat there, but it was certainly neat to see :) We also visited the other nearby villages via lancha. The cost is about Q10 p/p which is about $1.30 US. Very cheap. The population around the lake is mostly Mayas so when riding the public lanchas you will see many Mayas in typical clothing carrying their goods to sell in the villages. We are from Florida, so for us our visit to Guatemala and Lake Atitlan was incredible. We also enjoyed jumping off the dock and swimming in the lake. If you seek thrill and adventure and are not afraid of a few bugs (part of being out in nature), then Casa Palo Jiote is the perfect choice. The caretaker, Jesus, is very helpful too. We speak Spanish so we were able to communicate just fine. I'm not sure if he speaks English, but I know Aaron does and he is very helpful and was always quick to respond to my emails. We highly recommend this home and would certainly return.

Perfect and Private

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I live near Antigua and have stayed at quite a few rentals around the lake, this was the best yet. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, accommodating our last minute booking in a timely and easy going manner, as was Aaron the local contact. The house really is perfect. I love cooking and the kitchen was fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, the beds were exceptionally comfortable with lots of spare warm blankets etc, the couch was heaven (a rare breed in these parts), there are heaps of board games, books and music for fun times and relaxing and the location has the best view on the lake. One of the best things about the house was the privacy and private jetty for swimming which we did plenty of (the water was clear and clean in the lake). The view was, of course, world class from every window. Jesus the local caretaker was there working in the beautiful grounds daily but he was discreet and was willing to give us more privacy if we wanted it. I'm not sure if he speaks English as we speak Spanish but he was fantastic and friendly and helpful. The only things I could possibly say that would be slightly negative for some would be that there is a very short but steep stairway to climb up from the jetty to get to the house. Jesus will carry your things for you though! We enjoyed just walking to San Marcos for supplies, swimming, cooking and relaxing. My only suggestion would be a hammock in the beautiful grounds somewhere. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the positive and informative review of your visit to Casa Palo Jiote. So glad that your stay, though brief, was relaxing and enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you again to our house, and promise that next time, there will be (at least) one hammock located on a tranquil terrace with fantastic views of the lake. Muchas Gracias, Sheila

Dreamy Escape to rejuvenate your soul

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Casa Palo Jiote and Soaking up the Magic and the Medicine of the the sacred lake.

Tucked away in a quiet bay just a 15min walk from San Marcos, or from your own jetty, 5min boat trip, the layout of the house is purfect to soak in the love and power of these lands and the powerful volcanos that surround the lake. The views from all the rooms are amazing. Some of the best on the lake from what we could see. The kitchen was divine and pleasure to cook and crest from.. As too the lounge room with comfortable lounges, a rarity in these parts of the world, as too the beds, but for us it was a place that felt like home and a place to dream from and be creative, write, play music and more.. Loved waking to the morning sunrises from bed, to doing yoga on the decks in privacy and eating fresh food we collected from the great local market on Sunday from nearby Panajachel (40min boat from your jetty) or 20mins to San Pedro. The steps up from the jetty or down from the road could be a challenge if your legs are not healthy, but we loved the exercise.. And the nights were super beautiful and often we were in awe at mother natures power. From the lightening shows to seeing lava flowing from the distant volcano.. One of the best holidays of our life, Sheila was amazing as to was Aaron and Amond (the local agents).. Looking forward to our next stay on the Lagos de Atitlan. . Thank you for having us. Loved it..!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the wonderful review, River. So glad that your experience at Casa Palo Jiote and Lake Atitlan was relaxing and memorable. When we decided to build CPJ on that mountainside, overlooking this magical lake, we knew that it would not only touch our hearts, but also the hearts of our visitors and guests. Words cannot describe it all, especially the peaceful sensation when looking out from the wall of windows into the starry night sky. Again, we appreciate your positive review and look forward to having you as our guest when next you visit Lake Atitlan. Muchas Gracias, Sheila

Tranquil and Secluded

  • 5 of 5

I was fortunate to be the first guest to rent out this beautiful home for a month. Though it comfortably accommodates six, I was a solo traveler who happened to stumble upon this place while looking for a home to rent for a month in the San Marcos region of Lake Atitlan.

What first stands out about the home from the lake is the colors of the house. They're vibrant. In the home, you'll have modern amenities while being in a relatively isolated region of Guatemala. The most beautiful aspect of the home is the view in my opinion. Nestled directly across from this home is a view of a few volcanoes, with San Pedro standing predominately to the right. I really enjoyed spending my afternoons on the deck. This home also has a private dock, which is an important facet since most of the traversing visitors will be doing will be by boat. This home is a bit far from view however and at times the boat taxi's may miss spotting you.

If you are looking for a private getaway and to spend the majority of your time with family/friends, this is the perfect place. If, on the other hand, you want to venture out to experience the nightlife or meet other tourists, then this home may not be as suitable since it is hard to find transportation in the evening and the walk into and from San Marcos can take 15-20 minutes.

Overall, I would recommend this home as a great family retreat or for those into solitude.

Owner's Response: Hola, As stated in this welcomed review, Casa Palo Jiote is located on a hillside over-looking Lake Atitlan, within walking distance to the village/town of San Marcos. It's about a 15--20 minute walk into the village. Or you may hail a tuk-tuk (small taxi) for transportation to or from town, especially handy with groceries or supplies. The newly-constructed house has modern conveniences, while including many native elements, such as Guatemalan green marble counter tops and colorful bed coverings. All of the wall art is local, mostly from the village of San Juan. San Juan and the other villages surrounding the lake are accessible by public boat from Casa Palo Jiote's private dock, or you can hire a boat and driver for exclusive use, providing you with more flexibility of schedule. Public boats pass by the lakefront at regular intervals throughout the day -- usually every 20 minutes or so. FYI: Be sure to hail the public boats from the end of our private dock by waving or otherwise getting the driver's attention. There is no public transportation, to my knowledge, in the evenings. You would need a private boat after dark. The setting and grounds at Casa Palo Jiote are beautifully kept and tended each day. The property is gently terraced down to the lakeshore, and the stairs (with railings) are placed in a zig-zag or serpentine pattern for ease of access. If needed, resting areas and benches are placed along the path going down to the lake and up to the road. At this time, there is no wheelchair access. You won't find much nightlife in San Marcos which is known for its tranquility and serenity. The main village of Panajachel provides tourists and visitors with several restaurants and bars, plus shopping opportunities, local history museums, and coffee tastings. Other villages around the lake, such as San Pedro, offer Spanish classes for ex-pats and tourists, and possibly some limited nightlife. Casa Palo Jiote is ideal for relaxation and recreation (RandR) in a beautiful lakefront setting with amazing volcano views. Lake Atitlan is the focus for swimming, of course, and kayaks are available for rental (see information packet), or you can climb a mountain or take a hike with one of the local adventure providers. Activities are plentiful and varied, depending on your druthers -- unusual and challenging, , or restful and easy. Hammock, anyone? This vacation will be as different and as memorable as you want to make it. Bienvenidos!
