I spent a lot of time, looking long & hard at what was available. I loved the homey look of the cottage. We were welcomed by Helen & Mike. The whole atmosphere is wonderful. This is a good place to venture out from. It is a long way to anywhere, but the good part is the tourist-free spirit we found. Everything works and is kept up. Thanks for the month.

The bed was comfortable, the ice plentiful. We appreciated the "little" touches: paper towels, salt and pepper, oil and vinegar, fresh squeezed morning orange juice .... all of it quite thoughtful.

Thank you so much for the wonderful visit! The oranges were so yummy and fragrant! And I love your dog and the girls!
This was my first time to Hawaii and staying here was a dream come true.
Hope to be be back soon!
Really felt like a home away from home. Regarding the property itself, it was very clean and everything was as promised. Everything you'd need to enjoy a vacation I'm Hawaii is here. I was impressed by all the small things that one might forget: a flashlight, insect repellent, body surfing board (no need to rent one), robes, beach towels and all kitchen devices/utensils needed to feel comfortable. The driveway is even lit up with blue spotlights at night to make the place easy to find in otherwise pitch black night.
The owners, Mike and Helen, live next door (they are renting their guesthouse). We never felt intrusive nor did we ever feel our privacy was compromised. They were extremely welcoming and encouraged us to ask them if we ever needed anything. They also provided some fresh fruit from the garden as a welcome gift. The property manager, Olivia, is just as caring. At one point during our trip I lost my glasses and she really went out of her way on the weekend to try to help me out.
Hawi is on the north end of Big Island, but you can explore much of the island comfortably from it. Pahoa/Puna areas are about 2 hours out so that would make for quite a bit of driving per day. Overall though I would 110% recommend staying here and we plan to return here on our next trip.
Very nice rural cabin. We avoid 'resort' settings and the Havi cottage was ideal. Located close to some old friends so we were able to hang-out with them and enjoy the surrounding area. The property owners and our VRBO-Havi host Olivia were extremely helpful.
Lovely, roomy cottage in a great rural location. It was exactly what we wanted: a non-resort Hawaiian holiday. Great view of Maui from the Lanai (and the yard). Owners were great. They were very helpful, even given us the occasional eggs from their free running chickens (aka "the girls"). They also invited us to their Super Bowl party which was really good fun.
The area had good road bike riding (which one of us was there for) with a bonus of getting to finish every ride with a final 3 mile, 1000 foot climb up from Hawi to the cottage!
Decent restaurant or two in Hawi, but we cooked for ourselves most of the time and the kitchen of the cottage is well equipped. Remember this is rural, so for any sort of shows or entertainment, you likely have to go to Waimea (19 miles, we saw a great slack key show there one Friday evening) or even farther afield, though the Bamboo restaurant in Hawi has music on Friday and Saturday nights. For the most part you want to be able to entertain yourself.
Hike down to Pololu Valley to a black sand beach or just enjoy the outstanding views from the top of the Valley. If you like live music there is a lovely restaurant with outside dining and live music most nights just 20 minutes away. It's called the Blue Dragon. Hike to King Kamehameha's birth place. The local Kamehameha park has a pool, tennis court, basketball court, a gym and a small golf course.
