Quiet lush green hiking trails nearby, so many bird species easily spotted in the ocean and the bay, bald eagles nest visible from kitchen window...
Whether you are attracted by Skagit's Tulips, Vancouver's cherry blossoms, or the fall colors of maple and birch trees; whether hiking in North Cascades National Park, chasing whale migrations among San Juan Islands, skiing at Mt. Every season there is something to see, somewhere to go, come again if you have been here before and the sunset is so peaceful, the moonlight casting over White Rock on the other side of the bay is always soothing. A Wonderful Home for a Memorable Family Reunion
We booked this house for 5 nights over Christmas, December 23-28 and enjoyed ourselves so much. We were a group of seven but we also had extra family joining us on two of the days we were there.
Before booking I discussed with Bruce, the owner, on the phone how he felt about us hosting these larger groups and whether there was enough seating to accommodate us all for sit down meals and he assured us that there was plenty of seating as well lots of serving dishes, glasses extra chairs etc.
Everything was as described and made such a wonderful welcoming house for us to spend time in. The nice thing about this house is that both floors are above ground with magnificent views of the water. The decks and outside spaces are really fantastic although we didn't really get to enjoy these in the winter weather. We found the house perfect for a multi-generational group because there were so many different places to hang out or do different activities and play games. Another great thing is the proximity to the grocery store at the Birch Bay Mall.
We were really impressed with this home and with Bruce the owner who is so friendly, helpful and responsive.
A great experience
Everything as advertised and better! Gorgeous view!
Bruce the owner was very accommodating to our large group of 11 and made our stay worry free! Beautiful home with an even more beautiful 180 degree view of the water. Amazing experience and will certainly be returning soon!
Spacious beautiful home in peaceful setting
This very large home is full of light and lots of room to relax, play or be together. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms up. Two bedrooms and one bathroom down. Two kitchens (only one useable), two laundry rooms, two living rooms, two huge scenic decks and a big activity room with ping pong, air hockey and pool as well as cable TV in both living rooms and master. The beach is down the road. There are two lovely outdoor patio settings and kayaks to take to the beach. Great Wi-fi but Canadian phone connections so get a plan to connect. You are minutes from Semiahmoo and the drive to the house is gorgeous. There were some water use issues, both fireplaces were not working but we didn't need them. You are 20 minutes from the Canadian border crossing which makes easy day trips. Be prepared to provide your own paper products. The kitchen is very small and not laid out well. There is a two car garage and a steep driveway and parking. Bath tub also not usable. Early checkout. We saw lots of birds, a bunny, ocean and boats. Quiet peaceful setting close to Blaine and Bellingham. So turn off your phone and enjoy the beauty.
Beautiful home, amazing views. We had a lovely weekend. Plenty of room for our group of 8 adults!
open space, just not very clean and maintained
We had a staff retreat here and loved the open layout of the house and the beautiful view of the property. The garden and outside was very nice to enjoy and definitely a plus. The house itself, was not very clean and an embarrassment as a business owner taking their staff there. You wonder what the cleaning fee went to. We had to rewash a number of our dishes the first night before eating, the linens had stains on them and weren't the cleanest, a number of things were broken (ie. ping pong table, toilet in the powder room, sink down stairs, etc). I think when looking at the pictures and description, you think you can utilize the full house and all that it has to offer, but in the end if you want to use certain items (ie. bbqs, etc) it either is not working or cost extra cleaning fees to use. It says it sleeps 15 and we had 12 people and couldn't sleep us all. The beds aren't big enough for 2 people so be prepared to bring some sleeping bags to sleep on the couch. I think if they gave us a discount or cut back on the cleaning fee or something to better set the expectation of what we were getting, it would've been okay. I even had pull their garbage bins all the way up the hill and long drive way to their garage to use it because it wasn't brought in. It's the little things I think that didn't make it feel like it was set up and ready for someone to enjoy. So nothing big, just recognize the little stuff might not be taken care of for you unlike other hospitality I have received with other rentals.
Thank you for your feedback.
We have been hosting guests at this beautiful vacation home for more than 3 years and have always received wonderful reviews. So, when one guest called me and told me about your review (recently) - I missed it somehow earlier, I was frankly very surprised!
Regarding the cleaning job, we have been using a great cleaning company (and pay them at least $200 each time - sometime more due to excessive cleaning) and I am sorry that their job did not meet your expectation. I wish I found out sooner so that I could have talked to the cleaning company immediately and see what might have gone wrong during that one cleaning.
To clarify on the "extra cleaning fee" for using BBQ stove, what we stated to all guests is that they need to clean the BBQ stove if they decide to use it (because it is an outdoor and optional item, we did not want to simply always bill everyone for that cleaning cost regardless whether they use it or not). So, if any guests decide to use it AND do not clean it afterwards, we said we would charge $50. To date, we have never charged anyone the $50.
Regarding the sleeping arrangement, looking back, maybe we should not have accepted your booking request for a company retreat. Even though we have clearly specified how many beds (and their sizes) on our listing, our vacation home probably wouldn't be a good fit for 12 COMPANY EMPLOYEES to sleep comfortably.
Finally, I wish you approached me during your stay (as soon as you had those concerns) or immediately after your checkout, that you believed that some discount or reduced cleaning fee would have enhanced your experience - I would have done that!
I am sorry that your experience was not a great one. Please let me know if you have any further questions that I can address. Thanks again for your candid feedback. Although we rarely respond to any of our guests' feedback, we do sincerely appreciate them all!
With my best regards,
Great views, plenty of room
12 of us were very comfortable.
It is truly rare to have a place that can offer multiple attractions in one family vacation, just to name a few here:
- Whale watching tours have a launching point at nearby Semiahmoo resort conveniently, the unique almost from outer space songs orcas exchanging in the ocean are simply unforgettable.
- North Cascades National Park is about 2 hours away, one of the less known hidden gems comparing to some other national parks
- San Juan Islands aren't that far off into the pacific ocean, take a ferry to see the lavender fields can be an enchanting trip
- The boarder is literally minutes away, check out Vancouver during your stay
- Even local parks like Whatcom Falls can be a perfect day trip for a family with young children, beautiful quiet and it's free.
- http://www.tulipfestival.org/ if your vacation happens to be in the month of April, you don't want to miss the color-rich tulips fields which is about 53 miles away
- If you did not arrive from Seattle airport, a day trip to the big city can be full of excitements.
- Book a deep sea fishing trip and capture some pleasant surprises for your dinner table
It is a nice list of enjoyments awaiting.
