About Ivan Roldan

Debbie & myself came to the mountains from sunny So. Florida where we both grew up. We both wanted to trade the corporate life for an easier going lifestyle somewhere where we could enjoy the rest of our lives away from the hectic pace of a metropolitan city. We found our paradise in the western North Carolina mountains where we own and operate Albert's Lodge at Mt. Mitchell. We are fortunate to be living and working where we also love to vacation.

I am an avid photographer and love being outdoors whether it's cycling, hiking or just sitting out on the patio with my beautiful wife, Debbie & chocolate Lab, listening to the babbling creek out front.

What makes this cottage unique

The Bird House is named for the unique decor which includes bird houses, bird cages and, of course, small life-like birds throughout the house including the rafters. The layout of the house, elevated and round with large floor to ceiling windows, also adds to the feeling of being in a large aviary.

The best part is the breathtaking view right from the living room sofa of the Black Mountains. One of the best views in the entire valley.

great location to access blue ridge parkway, friendly staff, needs updating

  • 3 of 5

Great location to get to Mt. Mitchell, crabtree falls, etc for some great hikes. A smaller waterfall which is a 20 minute walk from the house is also very nice and the kids had fun there. Staff was very friendly. Enough space to sleep up to 8, I'd say (we were 2 adults and 2 kids). This is a good place as a base from where to leave for excursion but it's not exactly a comfortable, hidden-away cabin in the woods. Route 80 runs right behind it which gets a reasonable amount of traffic. Next door house ran a rather noise HVAC unit 24/7, although it was neither hot nor cold. So it's not the quiet environment I had hoped for. Also, the windows don't open so you can't sleep with the windows open (which I like to do). Also, the place is a bit rundown. E..g the dishwasher had all sorts of cables dangling on the floor (death trap for toddlers),; beds are saggy, etc.; it was ok for 3 nights but this place isn't for us and we will look elsewhere next time.

Cozy getaway for small- or medium-sized groups; Friendly and helpful owners

  • 5 of 5

The property is located among a few other cabin rentals and a motel-style lodge under the same ownership. The birdhouse (where we stayed) slept the six of us comfortably, and has pretty views of the mountains from the living room and upstairs porch. We enjoyed using the amenities for cooking, but it was close enough to Little Switzerland and Burnsville for us to go into town and enjoy a meal at a local brewery and shop the antique shops/used bookstores in each of those towns. It was also less than 10 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we were able to enjoy the views on a run, and also from the car on the way to Mt. Mitchell Park.

We had a wonderful time at the birdhouse! We loved visiting Roaring Falls, just down the road. Close to Mount Mitchell, which was also wonderful. The owners were great to work with! Fun memories for our group!
