About Van Roldan
Debbie & myself came to the mountains from sunny So. Florida where we both grew up. We both wanted to trade the corporate life for an easier going lifestyle somewhere where we could enjoy the rest of our lives away from the hectic pace of a metropolitan city. We found our paradise in the western North Carolina mountains where we own and operate Albert's Lodge at Mt. Mitchell. We are fortunate to be living and working where we also love to vacation. I am an avid photographer and love being outdoors whether it's cycling, hiking or just sitting out on the patio with my beautiful wife, Debbie & chocolate Lab, listening to the babbling creek out front.
Van Roldan purchased this Cottage in 2014
What makes this Cottage unique
The Bird House is named for the unique decor which includes bird houses, bird cages and, of course, small life-like birds throughout the house including the rafters. The layout of the house, elevated and round with large floor to ceiling windows, also adds to the feeling of being in a large aviary. The best part is the breathtaking view right from the living room sofa of the Black Mountains. One of the best views in the entire valley.

The property is beautiful
The Owner was very nice and there when we needed him! The property is as pictured and very clean. It slept my party of 11 comfortably. We had a great time! Thankyou :)
We are so pleased you enjoyed your celebration and stay at the Birdhouse Cottage. It was a pleasure hosting your party of 11! Thank you Kayla.
Clean and spacious
Kitchen was small but well stocked. Plenty of sleeping for our three families. Beautiful area.
Great location. Very nice owners
The propert is not well laid out for a family. House needs a lot of maintenance. I would recommend making some repairs and updates. Would visit again but not staying in this property. Two bedrooms on bottom and no bathroom. Very inconvenient
Loved the view of meadow and mountains from porch.
Wonderful experience. The house had plenty of room and was very clean. The views from the front of the house made it worthwhile! The only complaint was that the back of the house was separated from a small road by bushes and trees. I did not like being that close, but all of our time was spent in the front of the house and playing in the meadow. Van and Deb were some of the nicest homeowners we have rented from. Would do it again.
Nice location but it needs some touch up.
Nice property in a good location with beautiful views of the mountains. This house is not good for toddlers and small children. The distance between the bars in the staircase hand railing is way to big, same thing for the balcony, there are also loose pices in the balcony fence. Overall we likes the place but safety related things like these should be corrected asap.
Please accept our sincere apologies for any undo stress caused by your safety concerns for the little ones. We'd also like to thank you for your candid assessment and review - we value your opinion, whether good or not so good, in order to keep us on our toes and help us provide the best possible accommodations for our guests during their visit. We take your concern for child safety very seriously and will make the necessary repairs and adjustments to the spiral staircase railing as well as the balcony immediately.
Aside from the safety concerns, we're glad you had a wonderful stay while experiencing the fall color change of mid October as well a the peacefulness of the mountains. We enjoyed watching the older children playing with the fallen leaves and especially how much fun they had with the wheelbarrow.
We hope you had a safe drive home and would love to have you stay again in the future - we promise your safety concerns will have been addressed satisfactorily.

great location to access blue ridge parkway, friendly staff, needs updating
Great location to get to Mt. Mitchell, crabtree falls, etc for some great hikes. A smaller waterfall which is a 20 minute walk from the house is also very nice and the kids had fun there. Staff was very friendly. Enough space to sleep up to 8, I'd say (we were 2 adults and 2 kids). This is a good place as a base from where to leave for excursion but it's not exactly a comfortable, hidden-away cabin in the woods. Route 80 runs right behind it which gets a reasonable amount of traffic. Next door house ran a rather noise HVAC unit 24/7, although it was neither hot nor cold. So it's not the quiet environment I had hoped for. Also, the windows don't open so you can't sleep with the windows open (which I like to do). Also, the place is a bit rundown. E..g the dishwasher had all sorts of cables dangling on the floor (death trap for toddlers),; beds are saggy, etc.; it was ok for 3 nights but this place isn't for us and we will look elsewhere next time.
The Bird House is situated within the Pisgah National Forest, it is the perfect spot to enjoy all your favorite outdoor activities - hiking, bicycling, tubing, white water rafting, skiing, bird watching, mining and so much more.
Uniquely located within walking distance of Roaring Fork Falls - ranked as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in North Carolina. We are in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi which offers miles of incredible vistas as well as trails for your hiking pleasure.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, listed as the second best touring road on the planet by Outdoor Magazine, is only 3 miles away at mile post 344 and offers a quick on and off point of entry for sightseeing along one of the most beautiful roads on the continent. Full of spectacular overlooks and mountain vistas, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the number one choice for travelling and sightseeing throughout the mountains of the Southeastern US. Centrally located a midst the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Black Mountains, the Birdhouse is the perfect base camp for all your sightseeing throughout western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, northern Georgia and South Carolina. Dynamic Asheville is less than an hour's drive where the grand Biltmore Estate is located.
If you like playing the links, we are within walking distance to the Mt. Mitchell Golf Club - one of the premier golf courses in North Carolina. The Bird House looks out towards the 18th hole. (Seasonal: May 1st - October 31st)
The South Toe Valley is widely known for its high concentration of arts & crafts studios due to the influence of the Penland School of Crafts, the premier arts & crafts school in the country attracting artists from around the globe for over 75 years. Many of the studios are open year round for you to visit.
Two excellent restaurants, J & J's Grill on the Green and Teo's Restaurant & Pub at the Mt. Mitchell Golf Club are walking distance from the Birdhouse. (Seasonal: May 1st - October 31st)
