The home is situated at 5000 feet in elevation within a small coffee estate. All the beauty, peace and quiet imaginable is enjoyed while walking the grounds. Located a short 12 minute drive to town, the location is equally close to the best hiking and bird-watching trails in the area.
The owner, a resident of Boquete for the last decade, lives next door and provides a wealth of information and security.
A resident of Boquete for the last 10 years, Mary Ellen arrived on a sailboat, fell in love, and now with complete gratitude calls Boquete home. She designed this guest house for the enjoyment of the vistas, flowers and peace-filled natural beauty of the property she loves so much. She enjoys teaching and helping others teach art programs to the children of Boquete.
Mary Ellen Watts purchased this house in 2014
The Guesthouse was a spectacular place to stay. A paradise only 15 minutes to the main square in Boquete. The landscaping is perfection, as is the general setting of the property in the mountains. Colorful birds and insects abound. The sky provides the perfect panorama of shifting colors and night time stars. The house itself is well built and up to western standards. Very comfy beds and living room sitting area. On top of all this the host Mary Ellen is a sweetheart. Full of energy and enthusiasm for her Panama lifestyle. I really cant say enough good things about the Alba Verde Guesthouse. It was the best part of my 17 day trip to Panama! I will be back!!! Todd
Just got back from a wonderful stay at Alba Verde. The casita is beautifully done and has all the amenities you could hope for. The property is amazing with fruit trees, flowers, plants, birds and incredible views from both the front and back. The meditation patio was my favorite spot for reading, relaxing and enjoying nature. We enjoyed our time in Boquete and look forward to visiting again. Thank you Mary Ellen!
We had a great time at this very nice 2 bedroom house surrounded by coffee, oranges and birds. House is at about 5000 ft above sea level so AC is not needed. The driveway is maybe 1000 meters long and is a fun hill climb. The surroundings are awesome as the house is located on a coffee farm. The views are incredible and bird watching superb. We were there at the end of the rainy season so be being from Colorado, the moisture was a welcome change. The house is outfitted with North American amenities. Plenty of hot water, comfortable beds , and everything you would need in the kitchen. Sky TV worked great and our burner phone with a moviestar chip worked with no issues. Mary Ellen was away so Cat was in charge. She answered all our questions, added more info and was the perfect host. There is an overlook that faces a heavily forrested valley. Complete with rocking chairs and the biggest hummingbirds I have ever seen. This location made our Panama adventure a memoriable one. Thank You.
A beautiful setting exploited to make the most of flowers, fruit and bird watching.
Mary Ellen is a considerable artist and her aesthetic taste shows in the layout of the house as well as the gardens. She is also welcoming and efficient. She met us at David airport and took us to the house with a stop for supplies. She drove us around the area to see waterfalls and rock formations with invaluable information about the Boquete region.
We have rented a dozen houses in Panama and Costa Rica: this is probably the best and certainly the best value. Modern and very comfortable. Spacious for 2 people: perhaps 4 people would have to manage use of single bathroom.
It is 15 minutes drive from town and the last 1/4 mile is up a steep narrow track. Not easy for nervous drivers. The reward is scenery so stunning and gardens so lush and varied that are only possible at a distance from the town centre. We were so entranced with the setting that we took taxis rather than rent a car, spending the bulk of our time watching birds and enjoying the spectacular scenery. A few enjoyable trips but nothing better than the garden lookout.
My wife and I stayed at this property for three days and nights a few weeks ago. This was the perfect ending to an 8 day stay in Panama while we were visiting our son in the Peace Corps.
The review in this forum of J.R.W. really captures the feel of the property and its gracious owner Mary Ellen. Turns out Mary Ellen is quite an interesting person in her own right, is involved in children's art eduction in Boquete and is becoming a painter in her own right! We even asked to purchase one of her watercolors after noticing her art supplies as well as finished and in progress works at her house, located next to to the guest house on the property.
She was conveniently available on her cell when we arrived in the town of Boquete on a national holiday, when the usual route through town was impassible because of the parades. She offered to meet and drive up with us but gave us an alternate route that worked perfectly without needing her to meet us.
The house was lovely and very clean with western amenities and kitchenware and appliances consisted of everything we needed. If what we needed to cook with wasn't there , Mary Ellen would let us use what we needed from her house. For example, while there we had a birthday for one of our family members and Mary Ellen of course offered her own cake pan so that we could make a cake in the guest house.
The Alba Verde Guest House is the perfect distance from the town of Boquete, allowing access within minutes to both great hiking and some excellent restaurants, that is if you ever feel the need to leave this wonderful property.
Meal time was always preceded by a short walk to Mary Ellen's door or to her neighbor Randy's house (other family members stayed in his guest houses). They have a list of their favorite restaurants, many of which we visited and all of which were excellent. We felt that the information that they gave us made us feel "local", allowing us the benefit of their years of experience living there.
The Boquete climate is a bit cooler than Las Lahas Beach, where we stayed for the rest of our time in Panama. This was a welcome relief and sometimes even required wearing a light jacket in the evening.
If you stay here, you will not be disappointed. I'm sure that we will be returning in the near future for another wonderful vacation at the Alba Verde Guest House!!
My wife and I stayed at Alba Verde Guest House for 6 weeks starting in late September. Mary Ellen was a gracious host with offering rides when she was headed to town, taking us to the Mercado on the ride from the airport in David to the guest house, and introducing us to friends and neighbors. From the time she greeted us at the airport until we had to leave because other guests were scheduled to arrive, she made us feel like pampered guests and local friends at the same time. It was fun to come home and be greeted by Boone and Sadie, her friendly dog welcoming committee.
The guest house is spacious and comfortable. Internet and TV were reliable unless there was a short power outage. This was the rainy season in Panama after all. :) A minor inconvenience. We loved the view out to the mountains and the valley below. It seemed to change by the hour with sunlight and clouds. The view toward Volcan Baru from the rocking chairs in the covered inspiration point was awe inspiring. So close you feel almost as if you could reach out and touch the mountains.
And the gardens and fruit trees were spectacular. The largest poinsettia we have ever seen. SO many different kinds of flowers and bushes. Three kinds of oranges, limes, bananas, and papayas on the property. Picking fresh oranges and then squeezing for juice for breakfast was divine. The avocados right outside the door were bigger than my fist and so buttery tasting. And superb guacamole with the fresh limes. Leaving left over fruit on the bird feeder provided a never ending show of beautiful birds.
We have been traveling all of 2016 and in VRBO rentals almost the entire time. This was by far the best. Do yourself a favor and come experience the mountains of Boquete with the most gracious host you will ever find.
My brother and In stayed at the "Artist Retreat" last Feb. It was the perfect spot to unwind and relax. The house has western style amenties and is very comfortable. The views from every window are sublime. The deck area overlooking the valley was my favorite spot...majestic. If you are into birds this is the spot for you! mary Ellen is the perfect host...there when you need her but allows you to have your privacy. I hope to come back soon and stay longer!
