Awesome location by Tunnel Park, Holland State Park, Large Home Sleeps 11

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

This home has all the features a vacation rental should have: location, comfort, cleanliness and convenience all rolled into one!

For starters, the home is located right by Tunnel Park, one of Holland's most popular beaches and parks. In addition to the beach, Tunnel Park has a large play area for kids, sand volleyball courts, grills, a huge grassy area for games and a big look-out area for lounging atop the dune while enjoying the scenery of Lake Michigan. Our home is located just past the Tunnel Park free parking on the north side of Perry Street. The park is about 2 tenths of a mile - or about a 5 minute walk.

Now, about our home. The home is light, bright airy and big. There is lots of room to roam for the kids both inside and out.

You first enter the home into the great room. This is a large room with a vaulted ceiling that features a large fireplace at the head of the room. Just above the fireplace is the large, flat-screen television with built-in speakers (which the house has throughout for the stereo system). There is a couch, loveseat, two large armchairs with ottomans, and a coffee table. Lots of windows make the room bright and cheery.

At the other end of the room is the gathering table and island. Which are both right by the kitchen. The kitchen features a microwave, full-size oven/range, dishwasher and refrigerator. The entire kitchen is updated and all the appliances work great and are relatively new. The kitchen is stocked with plates, coffee maker, pots, pans, utensils and everything you need in a kitchen. The kitchen, dining area and great room are all together so the entire group can spend time together.

Just down the hall from the great room is the first bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom features a double bed. The full-bath has a tub/shower combo, toilet and sink. The fun thing is the shower surround (at the top) is made of wine bottle corks. :)

Then, just around the corner is the master bedroom that features a comfortable queen bed and two twin beds. There is a large master bath and walk-in closet in this room. The bathroom has a double-sink vanity, large shower, and linen closet. What's kind of fun is that the master bath has a 15 foot ceiling too!

The hall from the great room also has the stairs that lead to the lower level. When you first come down to the lower level there is a play room/area. If you keep heading straight you'll come to the large third bedroom. This bedroom is huge and has a full-size dresser and a large, flatscreen television as well. It has one queen and one double bed. Another sleeping area just beyond the large lower level bedroom has three twin beds. This area is combined with the laundry area. It's well lit and very clean.

The lower level also features a large new full-bath. This bathroom has a cute vanity, toilet and large shower stall.

Just past the lower level bathroom is a laundry area with a full-size washer and dryer you are welcome to use during your stay (this area also has the three single beds).

For the outside of the home, there are several areas to enjoy. At the front entrance there is a covered porch with wicker furniture. The perfect place to enjoy that morning cup of coffee or tea while the sun comes up to start the new day.

Then, on the opposite side of the home there is a huge deck that wraps around the back and west side of the home. Lot's of room to pull up a chair and enjoy the sun or the shade (take your pick) and catch a quick catnap. There's also a huge picnic table out on the deck to enjoy outdoor eating together.

Just off the back deck is a large sitting area with several chairs around a little fire pit station and just beyond that is a fun little playhouse for the kids.

Lastly, there is also a screen porch on the back deck that can sit four to five people. The screen porch is outside the back door from the kitchen to the deck.

The home is situated back from the street so there is a private feel even in the front. The back yard is very private. In fact there are no neighbors to the west of the property...just woods and then Tunnel Park.

Although Tunnel Park beach is an easy walk, the home is still very convenient to the Ottawa Beach area, also known as Holland State Park. Holland State Park features the general store, boardwalk along Lake Macatawa, and huge state park beach. There are also hiking trails through the Mt. Pisgah area and Mt. Pisgah stairs lead you up to the top of the dune with an amazingly beautiful view of Lake Macatawa on one side, and Lake Michigan on the other. You also get a good little work out on the way up the stairs.

Downtown Holland, with it's Saturday and Wednesday Farmer's Market is about a 10-minute drive.

You also have easy access to the system of paved bicycle/walking/running trails which pass just a block away - either way you go!

The home will easily accommodate 11 people in beds. If you have a blow-up mattress, the front area in the lower level could be used as an additional bedroom. The living space in and outside of the home provide plenty of room for the whole group to enjoy.

Great location near beach, our kids and grandchildren loved it, house condusive to family gatherings

  • 4 of 5

This home was a perfect space and location for our Labor Day week family reunion. It had a comfortable, rustic and well used feel to it that worked well for us. Our two adult children and our three young grandchildren gathered in this home for 5 days.

The lower level was like a two bedroom , one bath apartment and was perfect for a couple with 2 young children. The master suite bedroom and bath was ideal for a couple with a baby and the other main floor bedroom was fine for my husband and I with the bathroom being across the hall. The bedroom set up offered plenty of space to spread out and good privacy.

Upon arrival, things were not as clean as we would have liked but the owner was easy to reach, apologetic , and very accomodating to quickly take care of the issue.

The main living area was large and open and very comfortable. This space worked really well the day we had more of our extended family over for a larger gathering. The kitchen was well equipped and a good working space with the large granite top island a natural place to set a buffet of food.

There were lots of games and books for the children to play with and the play house in the private back yard was a treat.

Best of all, the short and pretty walk to Tunnel Park was such fun for all of us. We had picnics there, grandkids loved the playground, climbing and running down the dune, going through the tunnel to the beach and swimming in beautiful Lake Michigan.

This home and its location helped to make this much looked forward to family reunion a cherished time for all of us.

Very disappointed with condition of house

  • 1 of 5

We were really disappointed with the condition of the house. This was the first time we used HomeAway and I guess we thought they had standards for the houses that were listed with them. Some of the things that were really upsetting were as follows:

No working Smoke Detectors (it did appear there used to be one) – this is a law here in Illinois to have these

House seriously smelled musty and like mildew, horrible first impression – also cobwebs and such all over the ceilings

Shower curtains were GROSS – mold and mildew all over the bottoms – I do have pictures of this

Chairs around the kitchen table were litterly falling apart – they were made out of wicker and the wicker was really deteriorated– 2 of them were seriously unsafe – we put them on the porch upside down so no one would sit on them!!! – I do have pictures of this

Some of the doorways have split doors – one is when you’re coming from the basement the other is in the master bedroom bathroom – they need to have hooks or latches on these doors so if you do not want the door half open you can hook it. The very first day we were there I was coming up the stairs and looking down as I was running up, opened the door – only the bottom half opened and I ran right into the door – knocked my glasses off and serious bruise on my shoulder.

Master bedroom door does not close properly – keeps opening

Then there were really stupid annoying things like no HANGERS in the entire house???? What were we supposed to hang our clothes on?

This was supposed to be a “Family” home – lolol… not one plastic type glass anywhere – so you are supposed to give children actual “Glass” cups/glasses…. ridiculous

Could not play any games in the back yard as the only light was by the back door

Really nice Adirondack chairs but they were really filthy – you would think someone would hose them down prior to renting this home out. We couldn’t sit on most of them.

Just want you to know – this list is by no means meant to be inclusive, these were just things that were over the top. We paid, what we thought, was a lot of money to stay here, just do not think it was worth the money at all.

On a positive note, the area and beaches were fantastic!!

Owner's Response: This home has served as a vacation-base for many people over the past few years and most have loved it. As you can see there have been very few complaints. The experience of renting a home always works best when there is open communication between the guest and owner. In this case I hadn't heard any complaints until it showed up here. The one thing this guest was right on was that there was one smoke detector missing which was promptly replaced (and there are others throughout the house). Additionally, we have lined up a new cleaning service for next year. I can't speak to this guests preference in door style, dinnerware, or lighting, but I will say the home is well stocked with most everything one needs to enjoy a great week near the beach in an awesome beachside community. As always, if you are interested in this home but are unsure because of this particular review, don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Great Location, Great Amenities

  • 5 of 5

This property was great for my family of 10 (2 kids). The house has so many amenities including games, a fully stocked kitchen, towels and washcloths, a fire pit and a BBQ grill. The only thing you need to bring is toiletries, food, and any specialty items that you might want. The AC works great as does the washer and dryer in the basement, cable is easy to operate, and the internet works well. We would have had a great vacation if we just stayed in the house all day but one of the great things about this place is location. It is pretty much a 5 - 7 minute walk (depending on your pace) to Tunnel Park and the beach. It is about a 30 minute walk to Holland State Park. Tunnel Park is fun for kids and has a small beach that you can swim and play on. The weekends can be a little crowded but during the week it's very easy to find a nice spot. Overall we really enjoyed the city of Holland, Tunnel Park and the house. We thank Mark for opening his home to us :-)

Great house

  • 4 of 5

So many great things about the house: location very close to the beach, great common room, back patio with firepit (stocked with wood), well appointed kitchen, outdoor grill, lots of toys and books for children, upstairs bedrooms are very nice, central A/C, plenty of bathrooms, owner very helpful but not intrusive

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the bedrooms downstairs aren't as nice as the bedrooms upstairs. There aren't really windows downstairs and some of the beds are shaky. We had 4 adult couples, so two felt like they got second class bedrooms. On the plus side, it was nice and cool, dark, and quiet in the basement. Would be great for kids.

Awesome family vacation property and location!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing week in Holland June 24 through July 1. We chose this property because we were looking for something that could offer options for everyone - 5 adults and 3 grandchildren. We were not disappointed. The cottage is spacious with plenty of room to spread out. Multiple bathrooms and bedrooms both upstairs and downstairs were great. Add a wonderful deck, fire pit, playhouse, and private wooded setting outside, and you have the makings of a truly magical getaway. In terms of recreational options, everyone enjoyed walking and biking to Tunnel Park, Holland State Park, the Farmers Market, and more. Mark, the owner, was also very responsive in answering our questions and meeting our needs during our stay. We hope to return next summer!
