A Quiet, But Close-In Location
Located in the heart of the quiet, gated la Aldea neighborhood of Centro San Miguel de Allende, this large, elegant home is a secluded oasis of peace and privacy to be enjoyed with friends or family.
Yet, just a short walk away, is everything this vibrant, historic colonial town has to offer. La Aldea neighborhood spills out onto Ancha de San Antonio, site of the Instituto, home to galleries, craft markets, a cafe, wine store, concerts, language and arts classes. Also along Ancha de San Antonio are restaurants offering a multitude of cuisines, pharmacy, small grocery store, vegetable and flower vendors, and a weekend produce and crafts market. Ten walking minutes away -- past numerous restaurants, shops and ancient walled residences with elaborate carved doors -- is the center of San Miguel life, El Jardin. Ten minutes in another direction, just past the luxurious Rosewood Hotel, is the large Parque Juarez, site of fairs, festivals, musical concerts and a new, gated playground. Its broad walkways amid tropical foliage make it THE place for a morning jog.
The Main House - Room to Play, Privacy to Relax
Gracia 9 is a large property with abundant space inside and out for socializing or finding a quiet corner to watch TV, read, play cards or reflect. It is the perfect choice for a group of 6 to 8 people. The large kitchen, dining room and covered verandas easily accommodate family and friends.
The house and casita, which are only offered as a package, contain 6,500 square feet of living space. Within the main house are two levels of large rooms with 13.5-foot ceilings. The ground floor has a grand entry hall, living room (salon), dining room, kitchen, and den and powder room. The newly refurbished dining room with its large, granite tabletop seats 8 to 10. The newly refurbished kitchen incorporates all new high-end Thermador appliances. The TV room/den boasts a 49' ultra high-definition TV with cable channels (some in English) and a DVD player. There is a nice selection of movies or bring your favorites.
Off of the salon is a large, covered veranda overlooking the pool and garden. With its stone wall fountain, fireplace and view to the garden, it is the perfect spot to gather for drinks before dinner. All of the ground floor rooms and veranda, except the kitchen, have gas fireplaces with mantles of carved limestone.
A grand stone staircase leads to the second floor of the main house where there are three well-appointed bedrooms with en suite baths. Each bedroom has a large wardrobe. The master bathroom also has a large walk-in closet and safe. The master and second bedrooms have king sized beds; the third bedroom has two twin beds. A west-facing terrace with comfortable seating for two adjoins the master bedroom. A wide, light-filled gallery/library flanks all of the bedrooms and offers comfortable seating to curl up with a good book. Off of the library is an east-facing terrace with table and chairs from which to watch the sunrise, enjoy morning coffee, or find shade in the late afternoon. After dark, that same terrace offers a spectacular view of the illuminated church domes and spires that dominate the San Miguel skyline.
The Casita is a spacious, but cozy one-room cottage with kitchenette and bath. It is housed in a separate building beyond the pool but remains within the walled complex. It is the perfect choice for the couple with school-aged children in your group for it can sleep four. Or, it may appeal to adults who prefer not to climb the two flights of stairs that lead to the bedrooms in the main house.
The Heated Pool and Garden
The heated pool and garden together make a lovely view from the house. Flower covered vines climb the walls on either side of the garden. A mature Jacaranda tree forms a canopy over the Casita (lucky is the visitor who sees it in April bloom); tropical plants border a lush, level green lawn - large enough for croquet, badminton or boules. Three unique fountains grace the garden and pool area. The most dramatic is the aqueduct fountain cascading into the pool. The dense vines, colorful flowers and fountains attract many bird species. Bring your binoculars.
The heated pool is a dipping pool -- large enough for aquatic exercises and for school-aged children to play under adult supervision. A new, metered gas heater and newly installed solar panels will keep the pool temperature close to 80 degrees. The Jacuzzi enclosed within the larger pool can be heated to 100 degrees in about thirty minutes.
Because the pool is in the center of the garden and cannot be cordoned off, no children under the age of six may stay at Gracia 9.
