Welcome to our Cabin, our dream retirement home! We are not here yet as much as we would like, but that works out great for you! We do our best to make your stay wildly relaxing and enjoyable!
We have always listed with ONLY one bathroom. Just sayin'. Misunderstandings happen when people don't familiarize themselves with the listing. Please read the following completely to save $$! :-) Consider this entire listing as the terms of your rental, not just a description. With over 220 vacation rental reviews in cyberspace, we are more explicit in our description than most other owners, for both our protection and yours.
Our Cabin is the main house of several buildings on an almost 4 acre parcel in the forest, outside of Colfax, California. Conveniently located about 1.5 Miles from town, we are off of Hwy 80 from two different exits. We are about 1/2 way between Truckee and Sacramento.
We are very close to Bear River, and pretty close to American River and Rollins Lake. Yuba River is a little farther away. Skiing is about 45 miles away at Boreal and Sugar Bowl (don't let anyone tell you there is skiing within 30 minutes of Colfax). NorthStar, Alpine and Squaw are about 15 to 20 miles farther away on HWY 267. Grass Valley is 13 miles or so on 174 and Auburn is 16 miles down 80. Truckee is about 50 miles up 80. Reno is 85 miles east.
We rent only as much of the house as you need for your group, at varying rates.
One bedroom, the library, great room, kitchen and eating areas are always included.
With three guests or more, both bedrooms are included. See photos.
If both bedrooms are required by only two guests, it will be at the three guest rate.
The Master bath is NEVER EVER EVER, DID WE SAY NEVER! AVAILABLE TO GUESTS!!!! It is seriously damaged.
There is a third "bedroom" which opens to the living room so it's not really set up to be a guest room. We call this room our "Library". The library couch is great to sleep on, but it should only be used if there are 7 guests. The library closet is currently considered for owner use only.
We also have an attached enclosed porch (really a room) which is very comfortable and sleeps two in twin beds for 5 or 6 guests. (It is full of plants and plant stands in the winter, so it's not a bedroom, by any means. It is our workspace all year round, and has no designated storage of any kind for guest belongings. ) Please ask about other disclaimers if you are a group of 5 or more. The porch will be locked if there are fewer than 5 guests.
*A bonus item* is that we have an awesome hot tub, which with 48 hours notice, we can most likely invite you to use! (We don't keep it ready all the time, so please don't be disappointed if you make a last minute reservation and we say no... or delay its use 48 hours or more for longer stays. We make no promises! )
You will love that:
Our full sized beds are absolutely decadent, with two down quilts apiece in the winter to keep you super cozy at night. We have both down pillows and foam.
The kitchen is extremely clean and very friendly. It has a breakfast nook on one side and a formal (haha) dining room on the other.
We just repainted the guest bedroom as our most recent step in upgrading the interior of the main Cabin.
The hall/guest bath is adjacent to the guest bedroom. There is also a large closet in the hall, 50% of which is available for guest use.
Our air conditioning works extremely well, meaning you will be plenty cool in the summer! You'll be cozy in the winter, with a wood burning stove (complimentary wood is provided) or propane forced air heat if you prefer. (But never at the same time.)
We have EIGHT Gardens! Several are subdivided into several mini gardens. We have one we have only been in twice in 10 years. so it won't be redone anytime soon! But we are heavily focused on keeping the deer out and the flowers blooming! It's prettier all the time!
We just created an eating area on the deck with cool lighting and outdoor decor!
Several hummingbird feeders keep our very mellow birds happy...
Butterflies love us, too!

Our floors are painted plywood currently and we are working towards replacing them. We actually own the flooring, but we need to finish painting first! In the meantime, the floors are more of a cool trendy look with multiple layers of paint for a farmhouse appeal. Rugs cover most of the flooring anyway.
We are making it as warm a home as possible over time, but not overnight. Ours isn't a high end luxury place, but a warm and welcoming space. (The guest bathroom is next to paint, and then the master.) Ask where we are in the process.
Medium term renters:
We regularly rent out the second bedroom (sharing the house with us), on a 30+ day rental (actually our first preference) and/or less commonly do a 30+ day rental of the whole house.
Speed limit on our road is 5 miles per hour.
We are 1/4 mile off the main road, on a private driveway with several other homes. We have recently added signage and reflectors to make the entrance to our property more visible, especially if you are arriving at night. You are responsible to get directions prior to leaving, in case GPS fails.
We stay in the property often, and we do have a Toy Poodle service dog weighing eight pounds. He has HAIR, not fur, and does not typically arouse an allergic response. However, if you are super extremely allergic, this may not be the best property for you. That is on you to decide. We do not have cats. We do not accept pets or service animals, and bringing one forfeits your entire deposit, because we have to put OUR service dog ahead of all other animals.
The porch which wraps around the house on two sides, needs replacement of several boards in front of the living room window all the way to the rail. We will begin that process in late 2016. We recommend avoiding that area, as one might easily trip over a slightly raised loose board end. Especially true as we approach 2017 and we have wet weather.
For many years our Cabin was a rental, while we enjoyed our second building the "Cabinette" for infrequent overnights. The Cabinette is a detached in law unit behind the main Cabin. We stay in the Cabinette still, when we have guests. We NEVER rent out the Cabinette.
We will notify you reasonably ahead of time of our plans, but we do maintain the right to be on our land at any time during any stay.
In the winter, we must water the plants in the enclosed porch, no matter how many guests are in the house.
Depending on method of payment, we reserve the right to alter the price of the automated quote provided by the site. Until payment is received, all terms remain negotiable.
Damage deposits paid to VRBO directly prior to rental, are dispersed by VRBO to the host/owner/property manager at the SAME TIME the host/owner/property manager receives the associated rental monies earned. VRBO does not return deposits back directly on any rental. With that said, we will not return deposits via paper checks. We ONLY return deposits electronically. If you are not willing to receive your deposit back electronically, you will not have your reservation accepted.

We travel a LOT. Our other property keeps us from being here as much as we like.

We bought Bear River Ranch because we thought we would be retiring near Jerry's sisters and father by now. Of course, that was before 2007 happened. The second building, the 'Cabinette' has been our little get-away spot for the past 15 years and remains our little hideaway when others are present in the main Cabin.
It had 8 amazing gardens when we first bought it, unfortunately ruined by tenants. It is high maintenance for sure, and we are trying to restore the gardens to their former glory. You will probably think the yard is pretty nice, but we know what it CAN look like, and it has a ways to go yet. So far the Main Entry garden is the only one really close to it's original state.
The best part of our house is that it is so quiet, and feels so safe. There is a lot of wildlife, and most likely the only sounds you will hear will come from nature. We have many different types of birds, including hawks, owls, and wild turkeys.
My husband and I spent the Chrismas holiday in 2014 for three nights in this cozy cabin. In spite of the very short notice of our booking, the response of Jamie, the owner, was so attentive in an incrediblly rapid manner. The charms of the cabin itself for us are: the spacious and well designed interior setting, great for 2+ people, the fireplace with abundant natural firewoods and its proximity to great natural assets such as Dear River and American River while reaching to downtown and a supermarket was just within 10 min drive. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience to stay in the cabin and appreciate the owners' thoughtfulness to set up the place so nicely and in tact.
We had a great time in your house. The teens loved the experience. On Saturday we went to Reno to Celebrate my niece's birthday.
And we took everyone to go skiing in Squaw Valley and Boreal.
We wake up this morning with the snow outside, the surroundings all white. Was hard to leave the house after we get all that snow outside. The fire place kept us cozy.
We enjoyed our stay in the house.
We had a nice, cozy experience in the cabin. If you are looking for a quiet, no frills cabin in the woods to relax, this is a great spot. The hot tub and wood furnace are quite cozy. The owners were really nice to ship me my hiking boots that I forgot in the house.
The house was clean and roomy, but we experienced a number of problems:
It was advertised on VRBO, at the time, as having two bathrooms, but when we arrived we found that one of the bathrooms was locked and off limits. We had rented it for two couples but, because of the lack of a second bathroom, the other couple decided to stay somewhere else.
While the bedroom was large, there was no place to hang clothes and most of the dresser drawers were filled with the owners’ things; there were only two empty drawers. There was no luggage stand.
An automatic sprinkler goes on at 5:30 am to water flowers and grass next to the house. The sprinkler pipes run next to the bedroom we were in, and acted as a built-in alarm clock.
There were no written instructions about house rules, internet access, etc. In general, her clarity of communication was modest.
One reason we rented this house was the “no pets” description online, since one of us is highly allergic to dogs. There was no indication that a dog lives in the house. We were therefore surprised that they live in the house with their small dog when it isn’t rented; anyone with serious dog allergies should be aware of this.
The house isn’t visible from the road, and the access road to the house is easily missed. We strongly recommend arriving before dark.
She asked us to pay the rental fee and damage deposit by check, which we did. But when we asked for the damage deposit to be returned by check, she balked and gave odd excuses for not writing a check, claiming that writing a check and mailing it was too difficult. (She wanted to use an electronic transfer, but that requires disclosing checking account codes.) After weeks of exchanging emails, we finally received a check for the deposit. We strongly recommend paying via VRBO rather than by check.
It was definitely a fun getaway. The whole goal was to eat, drink, and be merry. We had plans to go to check out the local, go hiking, and stuff, but that didn’t happen. We found ourselves just letting everything go!
The fireplace was so awesome, it made the whole place cozy!
Monday, we decided to stay in. We played board games that we brought, there were some there that we played! It was really relaxing. We watched a couple redboxes. Nothing beats just chilling hard!
Sunday night, we cooked dinner. Pretty much wine and dined. My friend Noah is a chef. He cooked a lot and all the kitchen gadgets are there!
My friend was on a wheelchair the entire weekend; she said the space in the cabin was perfect. It wasn’t small or anything. Only thing is to get on and off the deck.
It was my goal for all of us to disconnect from reality, but my friend had a laptop and she used WIFI to get some of her work-related stuff done.
Not only I’d recommend it to friends, family, but I’m thinking of renting the entire week in a couple of months so I can go snowboarding with friends!
Skiing and white water are at a little distance but we felt both were worth mentioning. The nearest hospital is Sutter Faith in Auburn. There are closer urgent care centers.
