About the property

Oaken Forest Cabin with Deer, Fowl, Fox as Frequent Visitors!

Please introduce yourself before booking. This is our home and we would like to feel trust in you before accepting.

We only live here 3/4 time, and that works out great for our guests! We do our best to make your stay wildly relaxing and enjoyable! Our house has 8 gardens, and are always being improved.


Prices are based on 1 BR 1 BA. Prices increase with number of guests, and number of rooms requested.

Save money by renting only what you need of our VACANT home. You can rent 1 bedroom, 1 bath, for one to two ppl, 2 bedrooms for 2 to 5. For larger groups, the enclosed porch with twin beds is available, but there is only one bathroom so bear that in mind. We no longer include the porch except for larger groups.

We have been painting the interior, but quite slowly. Just one wall at a time, to limit odor. Guest bed and bath are done as is the breakfast nook. Library is currently in process. TRIM has been done almost completely.

We have a Mother In Law unit where we may stay on the property and we retain that right at all times. We do not ever rent out the MIL unit.

Bring no animals. Jamie's service dog trumps all others.


Our Cabin is the MAIN house of several buildings on an almost 4 acre parcel in the forest, 2 miles from downtown Colfax, California.

We rent only as much of the house as you need for your group, at varying rates.

1-2 PPL: Guest bedroom, the library, great room, kitchen and eating areas are always included.

3 PPL (2 ppl needing separate bedrooms are charged at 3 ppl rate) both bedrooms are included in addition to the other spaces above. See photos.

There is no available Master Bath. It has NEVER been available to guests, because it was full of rot. Now it is semi remodeled but not yet completed.

There is a third "bedroom" which opens to the living room so it's not really set up to be a guest room. We call this room our "Library". The library couch is great to sleep on, but it should only be used if there are at least 5 guests. There is no storage for guest's belongings in the Library.

We also have an attached enclosed porch (really a room) which is very comfortable and sleeps two in twin beds for 6 or 7 guests. Please ask about other disclaimers if you are a group of 6 or more. The porch will be locked if there are fewer than 6 guests staying over night.

*A bonus item* is that we have an awesome hot tub, which with 48 hours notice, we can most likely invite you to use! (We don't keep it ready all the time, so please don't be disappointed if you make a last minute reservation and we say no... or delay its use 48 hours or more for longer stays. We make no promises! )

You will love that:

Our full sized beds are absolutely decadent, with two quilts apiece in the winter to keep you super cozy at night. We have both down pillows and foam.

The kitchen is extremely clean and very friendly. It has a breakfast nook on one side and a formal (haha) dining room on the other.

We are in the process of repainting the interior. This is obvious.

The entire home has brand new flooring, topped with rugs.

The deck outside is brand new as well.

The hall/guest bath is adjacent to the guest bedroom. There is also a large closet in the hall, 50% of which is available for guest use.

Our air conditioning works extremely well, meaning you will be plenty cool in the summer! You'll be cozy in the winter, with a wood burning stove (complimentary wood is provided) or propane forced air heat if you prefer. (But never at the same time.)

We have EIGHT Gardens! Several are subdivided into several mini gardens. We have one we have only been in twice in 10 years. so it won't be redone anytime soon! But we are heavily focused on keeping the deer out and the flowers blooming! It's prettier all the time! (Can you tell we are excited about the gardens?)

Several hummingbird feeders keep our very mellow birds happy...

Butterflies love us, too!

Additional info:

We are making it as warm a home as possible over time, but not overnight. Ours isn't a high end luxury place, but a warm and welcoming space. (The guest bathroom is next to paint, and then the master.) Ask where we are in the process if this is a concern.

Conveniently located about 1.5 Miles from town, we are off of Hwy 80 from two different exits. We are about 1/2 way between Truckee and Sacramento.

We are very close to Bear River, and pretty close to American River and Rollins Lake. Yuba River is a little farther away. Skiing is about 45 MILES away at Boreal and Sugar Bowl (don't let anyone tell you there is skiing within 30 minutes of Colfax; there isn't, unless you fly). NorthStar, Alpine and Squaw are about 15 to 20 miles farther away on HWY 267. Grass Valley is 13 miles or so on 174 and Auburn is 16 miles down 80. Truckee is about 50 miles up 80. Reno is 85 miles east.

Medium term renters:

We regularly rent out the second bedroom (sharing the house with us), on a 30+ day rental (actually our first preference) and/or less commonly do a 30+ day rental of the whole house.


Speed limit on our road is 5 miles per hour.

We are 1/4 mile off the main road, on a private driveway with several other homes. We have recently added signage and reflectors to make the entrance to our property more visible, especially if you are arriving at night. You are responsible to get directions prior to leaving, in case GPS fails.

We stay in the property often, and we do have a Toy Poodle service dog weighing eight pounds. He has HAIR, not fur, and does not typically arouse an allergic response. However, if you are super extremely allergic, this may not be the best property for you. That is on you to decide. We do not have cats. We do not accept pets or service animals, and bringing one forfeits your entire deposit, because we have to put OUR service dog ahead of all other animals. He was bitten by another dog costing $750. So we won't put him at risk again, or ourselves.

For many years our Cabin was a rental, while we enjoyed our second building the "Cottage" for infrequent overnights. The Cottage is a detached in law unit behind the main Cabin. We stay in the Cottage still, when we have guests. We NEVER rent out the Cottage.

We will notify you reasonably ahead of time of our plans, but we do maintain the right to be on our land at any time during any stay.

In the winter, we must water the plants in the enclosed porch, no matter how many guests are in the house, so we don't guarantee porch privacy for greater than two days.

We are on septic. We base our reservation acceptances in part on whether we believe our system can handle the group makeup. We retain the right to make decisions based on what is best for our property.

Until payment is received, all terms remain negotiable.

We bought Bear River Ranch because we thought we would be retiring near Jerry's sisters and father by now. Of course, that was before 2007 happened. The second building, the 'Cottage' has been our little get-away spot for the past 15 years and remains our little hideaway when others are present in the main Cabin. We don't mind being displaced, in fact, we enjoy our little getaway cottage.

It had 8 amazing gardens when we first bought it, unfortunately ruined by tenants. It is high maintenance for sure, and we are trying to restore the gardens to their former glory. You will probably think the yard is pretty nice, but we know what it CAN look like, and it has a ways to go yet. So far the Main Entry garden is the only one really close to it's original state.

What makes this cabin unique

The best part of our house is that it is so quiet, and feels so safe. There is a lot of wildlife, and most likely the only sounds you will hear will come from nature. We have many different types of birds, including hawks, owls, and wild turkeys.

We are in the gold country, and Colfax is full of history. Up the road is Dutch Flat and that is still very 1850's in appearance. We are just down the road from Bear River where you can swim, kayak or pan for gold. American River is 20-30 minutes away, as is the Yuba River. Rollins Lake is nearby, 10 minutes. Grass Valley is about 30 minutes. Cleaning before you leave: Please don't do anything AT ALL with the linens on the beds, not even stripping. Do clean out the strainers in bath and kitchen, sweep kitchen floor, wipe down the table and counters. Deep cleaning is our job, but please don't leave anything that would invite pests. Speaking of which, we are pretty close to organic. Mosquitoes and seeing a spider are not uncommon. Please keep the screen doors closed as much as possible. The house is well insulated and if you are leaving for the day, close the windows and blinds so it will remain cool in the summer. The wood stove requires instructions.

Our first VRBO experience - excellent

My husband and I spent the Chrismas holiday in 2014 for three nights in this cozy cabin. In spite of the very short notice of our booking, the response of Jamie, the owner, was so attentive in an incrediblly rapid manner. The charms of the cabin itself for us are: the spacious and well designed interior setting, great for 2+ people, the fireplace with abundant natural firewoods and its proximity to great natural assets such as Dear River and American River while reaching to downtown and a supermarket was just within 10 min drive. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience to stay in the cabin and appreciate the owners' thoughtfulness to set up the place so nicely and in tact.

Relaxing countryside felling, but close enough to get to town.

Hi Jaime,

We had a great time in your house. The teens loved the experience. On Saturday we went to Reno to Celebrate my niece's birthday.

And we took everyone to go skiing in Squaw Valley and Boreal.

We wake up this morning with the snow outside, the surroundings all white. Was hard to leave the house after we get all that snow outside. The fire place kept us cozy.

We enjoyed our stay in the house.

Clean, cozy and quiet

We had a nice, cozy experience in the cabin. If you are looking for a quiet, no frills cabin in the woods to relax, this is a great spot. The hot tub and wood furnace are quite cozy. The owners were really nice to ship me my hiking boots that I forgot in the house.

Owner's Response: We now have frills! We have installed beautiful new flooring, and replaced all the deck planks and railings with stunning new redwood. We also have just upgraded the guest bath, and added custom framed original art throughout as well!

Clean and spacious, but disappointing.

The house was clean and roomy, but we experienced a number of problems:

It was advertised on VRBO, at the time, as having two bathrooms, but when we arrived we found that one of the bathrooms was locked and off limits. We had rented it for two couples but, because of the lack of a second bathroom, the other couple decided to stay somewhere else.

While the bedroom was large, there was no place to hang clothes and most of the dresser drawers were filled with the owners’ things; there were only two empty drawers. There was no luggage stand.

An automatic sprinkler goes on at 5:30 am to water flowers and grass next to the house. The sprinkler pipes run next to the bedroom we were in, and acted as a built-in alarm clock.

There were no written instructions about house rules, internet access, etc. In general, her clarity of communication was modest.

One reason we rented this house was the “no pets” description online, since one of us is highly allergic to dogs. There was no indication that a dog lives in the house. We were therefore surprised that they live in the house with their small dog when it isn’t rented; anyone with serious dog allergies should be aware of this.

The house isn’t visible from the road, and the access road to the house is easily missed. We strongly recommend arriving before dark.

She asked us to pay the rental fee and damage deposit by check, which we did. But when we asked for the damage deposit to be returned by check, she balked and gave odd excuses for not writing a check, claiming that writing a check and mailing it was too difficult. (She wanted to use an electronic transfer, but that requires disclosing checking account codes.) After weeks of exchanging emails, we finally received a check for the deposit. We strongly recommend paying via VRBO rather than by check.

Owner's Response: Mary, We are really sorry that you were AGAIN unhappy with yet another VRBO choice. We really knocked ourselves out to please you, knowing you had written negative reviews in the past. We take complaints very seriously and work hard to improve upon legitimate complaints and criticism. Many of these, if you had said anything during your stay could have been addressed. But nothing was said. Most importantly, we have NEVER advertised as anything but a 2 BR 1 bath property. The second bath is not even used by us, due to previous tenant damage. There were FIVE drawers, available in the bedroom you slept in (ours) and there is a closet across the hall, plus a third closet in the third bedroom (library). We have added a second dresser to our room, but if it was just the two of you, the guest bedroom is where we ask guests to stay anyway. It has a dresser, a luggage stand, plus a closet. We have now added a luggage/pillow stand to our room as well, just in case. There IS/ALWAYS was a written list of information about the cabin including wifi info. It is kept on the wood tray on the ottoman. I am sorry that you did not notice it, other than to get the key from it. This info is also on the router in BIG letters. In a 3 night stay, if there is a problem, could it not be mentioned? I could have easily changed the watering time, to ANY other time of day. I will do that from now forward. Some things can not be changed. We do have an 8 lb HYPO-allergenic poodle who lives on the property. We are relatively new to VRBO and did not realize that there was nothing to indicate this. We will change the listing. However, if you are severely allergic, it would seem a good idea to ask. I apologize for taking a while getting you a check. I highly discourage checks. I do everything by email/computer. I don't want account information. I asked if I could Chase quickpay or paypal it by email, as I do with most every other guest. Is this review more a reflection of the fact that you asked to refund RENTAL money in addition to deposit, because your family chose to stay with your cousins all three nights instead of just two as originally planned? Without telling us you had any concerns or issues, you asked us to refund RENTAL money AFTER your stay. We felt this unfair. We feel this review is retaliatory in nature and we contacted VRBO about it.

It was definitely a fun getaway. The whole goal was to eat, drink, and be merry. We had plans to go to check out the local, go hiking, and stuff, but that didn’t happen. We found ourselves just letting everything go!

The fireplace was so awesome, it made the whole place cozy!

Monday, we decided to stay in. We played board games that we brought, there were some there that we played! It was really relaxing. We watched a couple redboxes. Nothing beats just chilling hard!

Sunday night, we cooked dinner. Pretty much wine and dined. My friend Noah is a chef. He cooked a lot and all the kitchen gadgets are there!

My friend was on a wheelchair the entire weekend; she said the space in the cabin was perfect. It wasn’t small or anything. Only thing is to get on and off the deck.

It was my goal for all of us to disconnect from reality, but my friend had a laptop and she used WIFI to get some of her work-related stuff done.

Not only I’d recommend it to friends, family, but I’m thinking of renting the entire week in a couple of months so I can go snowboarding with friends!

Skiing and white water are at a little distance but we felt both were worth mentioning. The nearest hospital is Sutter Faith in Auburn. There are closer urgent care centers.
