Overview

About the property

Paikapahu House is an updated 2br/1ba vacation rental located in Captain Cook.

The Space

For parties requiring two bedrooms, rent the entire Paikapahu House for $150/night. With a queen bed in each bedroom plus two sleeper sofas in the living room, the house can accommodate up to eight guests. Some times of year I can rent it as a private one bedroom for $99/night. Please contact me for a rate quote. VRBO's rate quotes can be confusing.

One of the first things you will notice about this house is the view. Sweeping sunset vistas of Kealakekua Bay make the kitchen and dining room a perfect place to end a great day of exploring this beautiful region of Hawaii. Whether you’ve been hiking along the Captain Cook Monument Trail, kayaking and snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay, or touring Kona Coffee and mac nut farms, Paikapahu House is a perfect home base for all your adventures. For regional reference, this unit is approximately 25 minutes south of the town of Kailua-Kona, and about 35-40 minutes south of the Kona Airport.

With a recent remodel, Paikapahu House will offer you the comfort of a clean, modern, tropical retreat. The unit is a completely private and secure apartment of my house. Guests have their own entrance, full kitchen, living room, Wi-Fi, washer and dryer, and same-level parking.

I am happy to help you with any needs, requests or questions you may have during your stay.

Guest Access

Guests will have their own private unit with access to a full kitchen, washer and dryer, and property grounds.

Interaction with Guests

I like to meet and greet guests. But if I have to work, or be off Island, I will leave detailed instructions and a local contact.

The Neighborhood

Sunset views from the neighborhood are spectacular. It is a great location to access both Kealakekua Bay and South Kona's restaurants and shops.

Getting around

I strongly recommend a rental car for your stay in the South Kona region. Public transit is not convenient in this area.

House Rules

Guests are expected to respect the house and property. Simply clean up your things at the end of your stay, and I will take care of the rest. I look forward to hosting you!

About Ken Kotner

I have been living in Hawaii with my family since 2001. My kids are now away at boarding school in Waimea during the week. The Paikapahu house is my new home. I set up the rental unit to help pay for college for my two daughters. I have been a farmer for the past 10 years and a massage therapist for the past 5 years. I have a beautiful massage and bodywork studio on the Paikapahu House Property. I work on many travelers as well as my regular clients. I have hosted travelers for several years at my previous residence, Kealaola Farm. I enjoy hosting, gardening and refereeing soccer for fun and fitness.

Great views!

This is a very nice place to stay. Plenty of room for a family and great views of the ocean. The center of Kona is about 30 minutes away and the airport is about 45 minutes away.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

The place was above and beyond our expectations! Especially compared to the previous we had stayed at through AirBnB. Fully stocked kitchen, Ken was SUPER accomadating, creating an extra fold out bed with mattress. Also LOVED the banana/lilikoʻi stuff in the freezer for making smoothies! It was a very nice extra touch. :) Would highly recommend as a spot to check out spots in the Kealakekua Bay area.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place for our family to spend a night. If our travel plans allowed, we would have loved to spend another night. It's in a quiet neighborhood with a scenic view of the ocean. The place is clean and spacious. It's a short walk to the start of the trail to the Captain Cook Monument - a great place for swimming and snorkeling. Ken was very accommodating with our later check-in. Thanks!

Clean, functional

  • 4 of 5

We needed a place to stay for a few hours before our 1:00am flight and this was perfect. It had a couple bedrooms which my baby was able to nap in. We all were able to take showers before our flight so we were able to play at the beach earlier in the day - fluffy towels and nice shampoo and conditioner were provided. And we used the oven to have pizza and watched movies, and relaxed before our flight. Ken was easy to work with - responded to my emails and texts promptly and was able to get us in a little early. The place was very clean, too.

Two Steps from Two Step!

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our family vacation. In the hills above Kealakekua Bay lies a comfy home with a view... Our family of five easily nestled in to Big Island living with this wonderful rental. We spent many days in Kailua Kona which was only a short drive north. We also made the longer trek to Hilo side, visited with friends, took in numerous waterfalls and even saw the volcano at night. It was a long day of driving but doable especially since the drive around the south tip brought us back to Capt. Cook more easily than backtracking over the Saddle Rd. route.

Our host Ken was gracious, cool, friendly and also a highly skilled LMT. This came in handy after driving round the island the weekend before.

This home was clean, well appointed, had a great view of the bay and was unanimously voted most comfortable in the sleep department. For some reason the nights were ample in length and all of us had the best sleep ever!

The highlight was being able to snorkel and watch dolphins at Two Step. A truly magical experience and privilege to witness as baby dolphins learn to jump.

Ken's rates are very reasonable and this home is a true island treasure.

Clean, nice view

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this VRBO in Captain Cook. The rental place is spacious, with tile floors throughout, making it feel clean and open. The kitchen has most things, but could benefit from the addition of a kettle, wine glasses, tea pot, colander, placemats. There were plenty of towels and bedding and the WIFI was great. The bed was comfortable and the place stays nice and cool. The BBQ had no knobs so we didn't use it, and there were three plastic chairs, but no little table for sitting outside to watch the sunset - whIch was gorgeous, every night setting over the ocean. Ken was quIck to respond to communications, and certainly gave us our privacy during our stay, meeting us only as we were leaving. The directions to find the place were excellent; information about where to find services such as a grocery store would be a good addition.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great stay! I appreciate the suggestions for kitchen supplies. These things come and go, so it is good to know what I need to pick up. I wish you would have asked me about the barbecue. It works perfect, except for the knobs. Glad you had a good stay. Ken
