Overview

About the property

2 bedroom Casa with Private pool and wonderful Rooftop view of Caribbean

We have a New House Manager that is Amazing and has eliminated the issue in the bad reviews.

We are priced at a price point that will allow the average American to get out of the USA and enjoy themselves on a beautiful native island of Mexico. Our prices, if lower than normal, indicate nothing else but that.

We have had two reviews that were not very good. I believe if you average all reviews and read my responses for those bad reviews, you will find this is not the normal impression for Casa Marlin.

Our Casa is located in a local neighborhood, median income area.

It is a beautiful 2 bedroom house, 1 block from the noncommercialized beach for laying out, a quiet neighborhood.

* PRIVATE POOL IN BACKYARD

* BBQ grill on back porch by pool

*ROOFTOP OCEAN VIEW with amazing ocean breeze (HANG ON TO YOUR HAT) (see photos) for Sunbathing and Relaxing (see Photo)

*FREE Wireless Internet

*FREE (ROKU, FREE NETFLIX and whatever free channels you like on Roku.) for rainy days, which are rare on this island.

*FULL kitchen with coffee maker, stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, pots, glasses, pans, (see photo)

*Convenience store 1.5 blocks away for drinks and also chips , soda and other little things.

*2 SAFE Restaurants within 2 blocks of house (meaning we have never gotten sick eating there)

* 1 SAFE Restaurant 5 blocks with good tender Steak (Thin cut because that's the best here)

* Many Restaurants Downtown that are SAFE just email me and I can send you the list.

* Socially and physically SAFE island that houses the MEXICAN NAVY and MEXICAN MARINES. They are awesome. They Drive the island 24/7 watching for problems.

* We see little children playing on our street and around the island after 8-9 at night. This is normal here, NOT IN AMERICA!!!

*Taxis from Casa to Centro (downtown), Casa to Playa Norte (North Beach)Approx 32 pesos (Tips are appreciated 5 pesos is plenty)

* All of our neighbors are very nice and helpful if you need help finding anything. (Must be good at Pictionary)

* we are a phone call or email or text message away if you need help also.

* REMEMBER THIS IS AN ISLAND. IT USED TO BE A JUNGLE, THERE ARE SMALL LIZARDS 1-3 inches long that you will see in the house on the walls periodically, no not hundreds but one or two. They are actually very cute. There is also SMALL ANTS 1/16 of an inch in size that you will see periodically in the kitchen area on the counter. They basically clean up little microscopic morsels of food that we humans miss or don't see. Please wipe down the counters with soapy water after you are finished preparing any food, this will minimize their activity.

Sorry but it is like this all over the island, unless you stay at the hotels where they spray weekly for the ants.

If these things scare you or make you weary just call us and we can calm your fears.

* PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS PURCHASED FROM A VERY LOW INCOME MEXICAN FAMILY. DON'T EXPECT ANYTHING UNLESS WE TELL YOU OR YOU ASK US. THINGS BREAK SOMETIMES. WE ARE STEPPING OUT OF OUR ZONE AND RENTING OUT OUR LIFE DREAM OF HAVING A VACATION HOME ON AN ISLAND. WE HAVE SEEN MANY POOR REVIEWS ON OTHER HOUSES WHERE RENTERS NITPICK TO DEATH. IF YOU ARE 'ONE OF THOSE' PLEASE DON'T RENT FROM US!!!

** Now for the upside we are normal Americans that work hard and will help with whatever possible when you are here. We want you to enjoy the island. We will give you locals Names and where to find them if you need help just in case we don't text or email you back within your time restraints.

Sweet Casa Marlin

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been traveling to Mexico for eight years now, we usually go to all inclusive resorts. This is the first time we used VRBO and we absolutely loved the experience. The Island is breathtaking, locals are very friendly and Casa Marlin was perfect. The casa has everything you could possibly need, it is clean, close to the ocean (2 min. walk) and the pool in the back is private. Lorenzo, the casa manager, was very helpful and kind. He picked up a golf cart for us for three days, we decided to keep it longer so he made those arrangements, before we left he picked up the golf cart and returned it for us, talk about service. He also ordered a cab for our departure, he will be there for you in any way he can during your stay. The owner is also very helpful, you will receive an email shortly after you book with pages of maps, restaurants and grocery stores on the island. We referred to them often during our stay. The food is absolutely amazing, we did not have one bad experience while we were there. We thought we would spend most of our time eating on Hiladlgo Street (restaurant row) but only made it there once because there were so many little "off the beaten path" restaurants closer to the casa that were incredible. We watched the super bowl in English at Topaz which is in walking distance to the casa. You will find several of the bars and restaurants are owned by Americans and Canadians, Topaz, Mike's pizza, The Joint and The Patio to name a few. We hope to return to Casa Marlin in the future, this was one of our best vacations!!! No more all-inclusive for this Ohio couple

Great non-tourist location in La Gloria

  • 5 of 5

The house was as expected, not fancy but quite comfortable and clean. Lorenzo met us at the house for a tour and made sure we could work everything. We rented a golf cart for the week so we saw every inch of the island making several trips every day. Also, 5 restaurants in walking distance. Limon was our favorite. There were ghost ants (tiny ones) but a bit of spray and cleaning the kitchen counter stopped that. The rooftop could use tile and a palapa which it will probably get in a year or two. The neighbors were friendly and quiet after 10 pm as were we. My wife will not go back to staying at North Beach or in the tourist town after this experience so I better rent it again next year.

Sweet and Safe Casa Marlin

  • 4 of 5

Stay here if you want out of the tourist hustle and live with the locals. Place is clean and the owners are easy to work with and the manager is very helpful. We had no problem locating great cafes and grocery stores. The rooms are private and there are 2 TVs if you care to stay in, but you can even sit out side with covered area by pool. The one thing is to be very careful with the floors if they get wet and watch the steps. I would come back and visit Isla Animals and walk the shelter dogs and take school supplies for the kids to Rubens to give out. Please respect the locals and tip good because these people work very hard to make your time on their island special. Thanks Again

FANTASTIC!!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED Casa Marlin! We stayed for 5 nights in December and had the best time. The house was the perfect amount of space for our family of 4 (2 children, ages 5 and 7). It is a simple home, but very well kept, clean and has everything you need for a vacation home.

Our girls loved the pool, it was larger than it looks in the pictures. The location of the house is perfect. We could walk to the beach a block away and spent most of our time there. Also within walking distance are MANY great restaurants, the Tortugranja, a very cool cemetery to explore, the women's beading cooperative, many convenience stores, the grocery store and more. Our favorite restaurants were Mango Café for breakfast, The Jammin' Grill, El Charco (next to Jammin Grill) and Chilito's by Ruben. Everyone in the neighborhood is so friendly and we loved experiencing "real" life on the island.

Lorenzo is the most wonderful host. He was so helpful and responded to all of our needs promptly. He arranged a fabulous snorkeling trip for us, arranged a cab to pick us up on our departure and recommended golf cart rental places. By the end of the trip we felt like old friends.

This house is better than described in the property description. We would definitely go back and stay again and recommend it to others!!

Sweet Little Mexican Casa

  • 5 of 5

My mother and I visited Isla Mujeres this week, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the adorable Casa Marlin. I prefer not to stay in touristy areas when I travel, so I always seek out vacation rentals in neighborhoods outside of the city. La Gloria was the perfect fit for us, and the locals were very friendly. We found plenty of good, inexpensive food within a 5 minute walk from the house, and we loved the gorgeous, craggy coastline for our morning walks. We had no trouble getting downtown when we wanted to; we walked most of the time, but taxis were also readily available. We felt totally taken care of by the owner of the casa, as well as the local man who managed the property. He was always there when we needed him, but definitely was not overbearing. A couple of things to note:

1) Yes -- you will see bugs; it's Mexico

2) Yes -- the internet will go down often; it's MEXICO!

3) Yes -- you will see feces from the street dogs and cats in the neighborhood, but just step with caution and you will be fine.

We felt like all of these things just enhanced the overall positive experience of Isla Mujeres, and we wished we could have stayed longer. If you want fancy amenities go to a resort; there are several on the island. If you want to stay in a cozy, traditional casa in a Mexican neighborhood, stay at Casa Marlin. We enjoyed every minute of it, and hope to come back soon!

Quaint and affordable house on Isla de Mujeres

  • 2 of 5

We really enjoyed Isla de Mujeres (and the ferry ride to get there), Mexico, our adventures, travel, history, food and the people are wonderful. We used Casa Marlin as a base for our other travels to Tulum, Playa de Carmen, Chichen Itza and Xcaret. That being said it worked for our plans but the house, as stated, is a work in progress as is the neighborhood in transition.

* Colonia (neighborhood) has many, many dogs and cats that contributed to the odor and caution we needed to take while walking outside so as not to step in any droppings, Rain just exasperated the odor, especially in front of the house.

* The local cats used yard, planters and roof as litter boxes (Vanessa, the property manager did indicate it was out of control). They also enjoyed sleeping on the patio chairs, so they always had hair. Maybe it was iguanas as Vanessa explained, but we didn't see any close to the house.

* Roof top had droppings and trash up to the last day when we left and the furniture was sun damaged and fabric already ripping. My partner insisted we not bother Vanessa as she had some family matters to attend to so we did not use the roof at all.

* When it rained, the roof top gutter dumped the rain on the patio. That was tied off later so rain run-off drained between houses

* A/C in bedrooms dripped water - Vanessa's husband came by the next day and explained that sometimes when it rains or the drains get clogged it drips

* A/C in 2nd bedroom (Roberto) stopped working - that could not be fixed. We did see a new in box A/C unit so maybe there are plans to replace it?

* Built in BBQ not working when we arrived and new BBQ had no tank - Juan was able to get the new BBQ working last week of our stay.

* Gecko droppings in the kitchen utensils so we had to wash everything before we used

* Safe keypad did not work, even after batteries were replaced. Vanessa did leave the key so we could use.

About John and Sonya Cauthon

Fell in love with the island in 2011, We went back in 2013 and found a house we wanted.. The natives culture and their great attitudes toward life and living on little has captivated us.

John and Sonya Cauthon purchased this house in 2013

Why John and Sonya Cauthon chose La Gloria

Our friends Raquel and Eduardo who own, The Shell House on Isla helped us choose this little Jewel of a Casa. It needed allot of tender loving care in the beginning but has matured nicely with the help of the skilled concrete workers. The Casa went from no windows in the back and no back door, with just rubble as a kitchen floor to a beautiful place to stay and relax.

This is not a million dollar home but it is a nice quiet place to stay.

What makes this house unique

It is away from the downtown area, so if you want to be left alone and not see allot of people you can just sit on the rooftop and listen and watch the Carribean waves roll in. But if you prefer to go downtown, it is only 35-40 MXN pesos ($2.50 USD) each way for a taxi. You can stay at home and cook, or you can walk two blocks and eat Authentic mexican food for a fair price, about $8-10 per person. A convenience store 1.5 blocks away for eggs to cook for breakfast or a little snack throughout the day. For Drinks and snacks just walk 1.5 blocks to the north, and there you go, beer for about $1.25USD each, buy one or buy 6 (you just take how ever many you want out of the 6 pack..😃). If you walk two blocks to the west you can see Cancun on one side of the Island and the Carribean on the other.

Golf carts are about $55USD per day. (You have to leave your Drivers license as security deposit). But they are sure worth it to ride around the island. We have never had a problem with getting our license back or them stealing the info on it. REMEMBER they know that tourism is their livelihood so they are all very nice to tourist. They respect us and of course we respect THEIR ISLAND. Rene and Rene restaurant downtown is a little place that can easily be missed, DONT MISS IT. Rene (the Awesome host) and Rene (the Amazing Cook, his wife) are so nice. (He will even teach you a little Spanish if you ask).
