2 bedroom Casa with Private pool and wonderful Rooftop view of Caribbean

We are priced at a price point that will allow the average American to get out of the USA and enjoy themselves on a beautiful native island of Mexico. Our prices, if lower than normal, indicate nothing else but that. We have had two reviews that were not very good. I believe if you average all reviews and read my responses for those bad reviews you will find this is not the normal impression our vacation home leaves.

Our Casa is located in a local median income area.

It is a beautiful 2 bedroom house, 1 block from the noncommercialized beach for laying out, a quiet neighborhood.

*2 SAFE Restaurants within 2 blocks of house (meaning we have never gotten sick eating there)

* 1 SAFE Restaurant 5 blocks with good tender Steak (Thin cut because that's the best here)

* Many Restaurants Downtown that are SAFE just email me and I can send you the list.

* Socially and physically SAFE island that houses the MEXICAN NAVY and MEXICAN MARINES. They are awesome. They Drive the island 24/7 watching for problems.

* We see little children playing on our street and around the island after 8-9 at night. This is normal here, NOT IN AMERICA!!!

*Taxis from Casa to Centro (downtown), Casa to Playa Norte (North Beach)Approx 32 pesos (Tips are appreciated 5 pesos is plenty)

* All of our neighbors are very nice and helpful if you need help finding anything. (Must be good at Pictionary)

* we are a phone call or email or text message away if you need help also.

* REMEMBER THIS IS AN ISLAND. IT USED TO BE A JUNGLE, THERE ARE SMALL LIZARDS 1-3 inches long that you will see in the house on the walls periodically, no not hundreds but one or two. They are actually very cute. There is also SMALL ANTS 1/16 of an inch in size that you will see periodically in the kitchen area on the counter. They basically clean up little microscopic morsels of food that we humans miss or don't see. Please wipe down the counters with soapy water after you are finished preparing any food, this will minimize their activity.

Sorry but it is like this all over the island, unless you stay at the hotels where they spray weekly for the ants.

If these things scare you or make you weary just call us and we can calm your fears.

* PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS PURCHASED FROM A VERY LOW INCOME MEXICAN FAMILY. DON'T EXPECT ANYTHING UNLESS WE TELL YOU OR YOU ASK US. THINGS BREAK SOMETIMES. WE ARE STEPPING OUT OF OUR ZONE AND RENTING OUT OUR LIFE DREAM OF HAVING A VACATION HOME ON AN ISLAND. WE HAVE SEEN MANY POOR REVIEWS ON OTHER HOUSES WHERE RENTERS NITPICK TO DEATH. IF YOU ARE 'ONE OF THOSE' PLEASE DON'T RENT FROM US!!!

Fell in love with the island in 2011, We went back in 2013 and found a house we wanted.. The natives culture and their great attitudes toward life and living on little has captivated us.

Why John and Sonya Cauthon chose Isla Mujeres

Our friends who own, The Shell House (Casa Caracol) (it is a a Must see) on Isla helped us choose this little Jewel of a Casa. It needed allot of tender loving care in the beginning but has matured nicely with the help of the skilled concrete workers. The Casa went from no windows in the back and no back door, with just rubble as a kitchen floor to a beautiful place to stay and relax.

This is not a million dollar home but it is a nice quiet place to stay.

What makes this house unique

it is away from the downtown area, so,if you want to be left alone and not see allot of people you can just sit on the rooftop and listen and watch the Carribean waves roll in. But if you prefer to go downtown for awhile it is only 32 pesos ($2.50 USD) each way for a taxi. You can stay at home and cook, or you can walk two blocks and eat Authentic mexican food for a fair price, about $8 per person. A convenience store 1 1/2 blocks away for eggs to cook for breakfast or a little snack throughout the day. For Drinks and snacks just walk 1 1/2 blocks to the north, and there you go, beer for about $1.00 each, buy one or buy 6 (you just take how ever many you want out of the 6 pack..😃). If you walk two blocks to the west you can see Cancun on one side of the Island and the Carribean on the other.

Golf carts are about $55USD per day. (You have to leave your Drivers license as security deposit). But they are sure worth it to ride around the island. We have never had a problem with getting our license back or them stealing the info on it. REMEMBER they know that tourism is their livelihood so they are all very nice to tourist. They respect us and of course we respect THEIR ISLAND. Rene and Rene restaurant downtown is a little place that can easily be missed, DONT MISS IT. Rene (the Awesome host) and Rene (the Amazing Cook, his wife) are so nice. (He will even teach you a little Spanish if you ask).

Beautiful two bedroom an authentic neighborhood​

If you are looking for a beautiful home in an authentic neighborhood​, this is the place you want to go. The house is very spacious for a 2 bedroom with a nice patio area outback with a great dipping pool. House was very clean and we'll equipped, and the house manager was only a phone call away, and she was great. The roof top sitting area is a great place to watch the sunrise over the Caribbean sea. We will definitely rent again, John was great, and look forward to renting from him again in the future. Thanks !

Great stay at Casa Marlin

We spent a week at Casa Marlin in June. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely book this property again.

The highlights for me were the POOL!, the affordability, the owner communication, the house manager, and the location.

We travelled with our 2 1/2 year old son. He loved the house and pool so much that we struggled to get him to leave each day. The pool was very refreshing and clean. The house manager's husband came by twice during our stay to clean the pool and check the chemical levels.

The location was perfect for us. It was mid island which made it easy to get everywhere we wanted to check out while being out of the main touristy area. The house was on a quiet street amongst where the locals live. This made us feel like we we're having a more authentic experience, as opposed to staying in a resort or hotel. Probably not what everyone is looking for, but for us it was perfect!

The owner was above and beyond with communication. As soon as I booked, he sent an email with a large packet of information. He also offered to face time with me if I wanted.

Shortly after we arrived, we realized the stove was out of gas. We texted the house manager Vanessa, and she was very prompt about getting the situation fixed quickly. The owner, John, also texted an apology about the situation which I thought was very kind and considerate.

We had a wonderful stay and love Casa Marlin!

Owner's Response: Alison and her family were great communicators, this is what is so so important when renting on VRBO. The owners have to know if there is any problems so we can quickly remedy the situations. ( a email or text is equivalent of going to the front desk at the hotel) It is really the best and fastest way to remedy a situation. Holding the information inside our heads can only breed resentment, which hurts your vacation and our ratings.. Alison, BRAVO to you for your honest review.

Photos completely misrepresent this property! NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL! And the owners are unattentive

The inside of the home is OK. Each room is represented for what it is. 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, dining room, and kitchen. The size of the rooms was acceptable and provided what we needed for cooking, bathing, and sleeping (except for the very large cockroaches that we found in the closets...we just kept our shut in our suitcase for the week). The rest of the property, the parts that sold us, the pool and the rooftop were unsafe, unusable, and there is absolutely zero privacy. There was construction at the property directly next door. Concrete dust, chunks of debris and large metal poles flew into the pool and all over the deck making it unsafe to sit at or around the pool at all. The trees and greenery were so overgrown that zero sun hit the pool area at all (but it didn't matter unless you wanted to get hit by metal poles and concrete). The roof top was even worse! There were cinder blocks and bags of concrete everywhere make it a trip hazard, uneven flooring, the "table and chairs" that were up there were cheap plastic and all of them broken, making it impossible to sit on or use. And the neighbors dog would cross over the rail and use the roof as a bathroom. We were told by the manager that that area was off limits, however it was one of the biggest selling points for us booking the property. We knew we weren't on the ocean but the listing shows the rooftop as a great spot to watch the sunrise, sunset. COMPLETELY INACCURATE! One of the Wi-Fi routers didn't work so we only had Wi-Fi to communicate back home in 1 room of the house and service was very intermittent. Vanessa, the property manager, was amazing, however! She was very apologetic for the condition of the outside areas and was very attentive when we contacted her. She is the only good thing about this property. I've tried emailing and texting the owners from the minute we checked in and throughout our 7 day stay and have yet to get a response from them. I took photos of the property and have sent them via email to the owners but have received zero feedback from them at all. DO NOT BOOK CASA MARLIN. Keep looking!

Owner's Response: I am deeply saddened that the renters didn't enjoy the location of our property. I received their email, never a text, and responded the very next day asking for photos and a chance to fix anything that was not up to par. Unfortunately I never received any communication back. I cannot control others actions, specifically construction of an addition right next door so that the family has more space to live comfortably. Construction in Mexico and their culture is different and so building takes a lot longer than in America. Mexico is just like America, sometimes people don't care if they make messes and sometimes people do. Some people are selfless and others self absorbed and only care about themselves. It is unfortunate that the reviewing renters couldn't understand that. If you read the review before this renters I think you will find quite a different story. The dead insect photograph that was sent to us yesterday by the renter was the only one pictured and she even said in her first email to me that they found a dead cockroach (singular) ( a waterbug) miraculously has now become cockroaches (plural). We do not have a insect problem but just as in USA we will occasionally find spiders, lizards, insects , small ants. There are no bags of concrete on the roof and there is a 5 foot wide path to the back of the roof where a view of the ocean is almost always appreciated. Yes the sun does only hit the pool a couple hours a day ( I have never claimed any sun hitting the pool) because there is an 8 foot wall around the pool, Banana trees and a coconut tree for culture and appeal. The new construction next door does decrease the privacy but I can't control that. I do plan on building a higher privacy wall when they are done building next door or this summer when we have no renters. Again I say that Casa Marlin is a work in progress. I also will reiterate that if there is a problem give us a chance to fix the issues before having a negative mental attitude. it will just ruin your vacation nobody elses. If you email us and we don't respond then tell vanessa to contact me, and we will figure it out. I am an easy going guy that is just trying to share this island with others by sharing a dream to live on the island. John

Great location and comfortable home.

We enjoyed five nights at Casa Marlin. The neighborhood is very quiet and everyone was friendly and helpful. The location is nice as it is out of the touristy area, but close enough to walk to many south and southwest beaches and venues. We spent our first day walking all over the southern tip (sculpture garden and archeological site) and oriented ourselves to the available beaches. We walked over to the Parque de los suenos one evening for a sunset dinner and swim in their pool bar. Breakfast at the Mango Cafe is only a 1.5mile walk and all the food is outstanding. If you want to spend time in the north beach area, it is an easy taxi ride. Vanessa was helpful and John attentive. This home is comfortable and made for a peaceful getaway.

Did not end up staying more than one hour!

Our family was very disappointed when we arrived at Casa Marlin. We were greeted with numerous dog and cat feces at the entrance. The curb appeal was not very appealing. The interior was dark and moldy-smelling. Pool was cloudy, rooms cramped, and plumbing suspect. The worst was the owners claiming it was a 'quite neighborhood'. The neighbor across the street has numerous dogs that would not stop barking and probably accounts for the feces everywhere. The rooftop was unfinished and there was no barrier between the neighbor who can be clearly seen via open door - not conducive for private sunbathing as stated in the listing. With two young girls, we did not feel safe or comfortable. Needless to say, we could not stay here and had to scramble to rent a place last minute in town. We have stayed in 2-3 star hotels in the past and were expecting to 'make do' with certain amenities when renting this affordable property but this was not acceptable.

Please be honest about the neighborhood and other descriptions on the listing.

There are many other beautiful affordable properties on the island. Don't be fooled by this one. Buyer beware!

Owner's Response: Future Renters Please Read, First and foremost, Sonya and I were saddened that the reviewing family was disappointed with Casa Marlin. We have only been renting it for two years and have great success as you can tell by the reviews. I do and have always made myself available to renters through email and text message for issues with the house while they are on the Island. Vanessa also is available for issues and I have gotten excellent feedback from guests about Vanessa going above and beyond. the reviewer didn't even meet Vanessa since because they were at the house a short time. Vanessa and the house cleaner were there at 11am on the day they arrived and made sure the house was cleaned. We unfortunately are not a hotel and do not have a staff to check the grounds every few hours for problems. We do rely on the guests to let us know if there is a problem so it can be corrected. If the reviewer was at a hotel I do believe that the manager would have wanted to see the problems before a refund would have been issued or sending them on their way. I actually worked at a 4 star hotel in the customer satisfaction area so I am pretty confident in that statement. Unfortunately first impressions are lasting and we did not get the chance to correct any problems that the reviewer experienced. When I sent the email to the reviewer asking to return to the house to take photos of the visible problems he declined. I was surprised by his declination of my offer because most people would have gladly wanted to prove their issues. There is a streetlight in front of our house that lights up the front of the house in the evening, the cleaner smell they smelled was Fabulos, My house manager returned to the house within an hour of the renter leaving and no animal feces was found on the sidewalk. The pool was clean and yes we do have a coconut tree above the pool so periodically the leaves will fall in the pool. Please read all our reviews to get an average and I think you will find Casa Marlin to be above average in ratings.

Quiet & Relaxing

Wonderful place to stay. Loved that we had a pool to cool off in after shopping. The manager, Vanessa is wonderful and very helpful. Only suggestion is to have a tip sheet explaining garbage pick up & if there is any recycling.

**Maria's KanKin** is a little hidden Jewel, if you want a private Beach, this is the place. 100 pesos (8 USD) in purchases at the restaurant will give you Beach Access all day.. The restaurant owners (young husband and wife from Argentina) are awesome.

**Mango Cafe is awesome and about 3/4 of a mile from our house

They have great food and all the waiters speak english and spanish
