About the property

3 Bedrooms, 3 Bath, Walk To Beach And Cliff Walk.

The Cottage on Ellery is located on a quiet street, an easy three block walk to First Beach!

Comfort and cleanliness are our main goals. We offer high thread sheets and luxurious towels, along with extremely comfortable beds and pillows to make the cottage your home away from home!

The main cottage has 1 bedroom upstairs, a sleeping porch downstairs and 2 full baths. Your group will enjoy the privacy of 2 more bedrooms and a 1/2 bath in the "detached" bunk house!

This 3+ bedrooms can comfortably accommodate 6 adults and the sleeping porch gives a little wiggle room to add another guest or two.

The BEACH, plenty of stores and restaurants (Like the Famous Flo's Clamshack) are all within a 5 minute walk!

The Cottage on Ellery is available for weekly rentals from July to September. Check with owner for shorter rental periods in May, June and after Labor Day.

The house manager, who lives next door, also rents her house which may be available if you have a larger group.

This quaint little cottage was built in 1926 and was one of the first houses built in Easton's Point. It offers charm and comfort for your Newport getaway. The house has upgraded bathrooms, a new dishwasher, new washer/dryer, fresh paint in many areas and other refurbishments. There is a large deck, barbecue grill and big backyard for entertaining. There is also a wonderful, enclosed outdoor shower for after the beach. There are a few beach chairs, boogie boards and a beach umbrella for your use.

About Sharen Thompson

A gift from my parents, the Cottage on Ellery is owned by my husband, Greg and myself along with my younger sister, Christine.

We are all originally from CT, although I met my husband in California on a blind date! We now live in NC and have 3 adult children. We celebrated our first month as empty-nesters living at the Cottage, walking the beach and having double lobster rolls from Easton's Beach almost every day! (A must while you're here.)

My sister, Christine, is living in Florida and has 1 son who just joined the Navy.

We know you and your family will enjoy the cottage as much as our families have.

Sharen Thompson purchased this house in 1995

Why Sharen Thompson chose Middletown

We have family in Newport and have been coming here every year since we were kids. We grew up in CT and were coming over by ferry before there was a bridge! Our father was actually born and raised in Newport and was a 'Fifth Warder.' He and my mother came back many times over the years. On one particular visit they fell in love with the Cottage on Ellery and purchased it for their retirement in 1995.

Our families have stayed at the Cottage many, many times and have enjoyed the privacy of the bunk house and the proximity to everything Newport has to offer. Our kids especially enjoyed playing 'store' on the rocks at 1st beach with Grandma, whiffle ball in the backyard with Grandpa, going to the beaches, taking surf lessons, exploring the Cliff Walk and just driving around hearing the stories Grandpa would tell about the people who used to live in each mansion. We especially liked the one about Doris Duke and the infamous gate incident!

Hanging in the dining room, is a picture taken about 1934 of my father as a boy, with his older sister, and the girl who used to live in the Cottage along with her brother. You may not recognize it, but they are standing in front of the Cottage on Ellery.

What makes this house unique

The house is almost 90 years old. The walls in the living and dining rooms are plaster coated and with the crossed window panes and flower gardens you feel like you're in a warm and loving place somewhere back in time.

To be able to stay here and have NEWPORT just outside the door is incredible.

The cottage is located on a quiet street away from traffic, but is just a short walk to the beach or drive to Sachuest Point, offering great rituals for the morning, our favorite time of day.

Change up having your coffee on the back deck one day and take it to Sachuest Point. A quick walk to the shore includes the smells of wild roses and salt air. Find an 'easy-chair-looking' boulde, and lounge out while listening to the waves crash and the gulls caw, all while overlooking some of the most private and beautiful ocean views in the world. A great photo spot too.

From the cottage you can walk down the street, the entire length of 1st beach and back to the house for a perfect 2 mile walk. If you want to go longer just catch the Cliff Walk at the end of the beach and go as far as you want!

If mornings like this sound good, you should see what the afternoons and evenings can bring. I have plenty of suggestions for you, even if it rains! This is the perfect place to spend a fun-filled and relaxing vacation with family and friends.

Comfort & Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our family -- 4 adults, 2 teenagers, & 2 kids. I was concerned as to whether the beds would be comfortable & whether the AC would be sufficient. We weren't disappointed at all! We had no plumbing or electric problems. Everything worked smoothly. We used the sun porch for sleeping & for playing. We only cooked one meal because, for us, vacation meant not cooking. It's true that it's a very easy walk to the beach. The owner, Sharen Thompson, was wonderful. We would certainly stay there again.

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Cottage on Ellery for two weeks so our two sons and there young families could be together and Grandma and Grandpa could see the little ones in action. the walk to the beach was so easy and so much fun! the cottage was clean, plenty of linens and great deck to relax on. the bunk house was perfect for the two families.

Making the reservation was easy and the owners could not have been more accommodating . Would love to rent again next year!

Thanks for wonderful memories,

Mary & Bob and crew

Our stay was fantastic! The cottage was beautiful and the owners were so helpful and responsive to all of our needs. We threw a lobster clambake engagement party and with Sharen's great input for best places to get our food/supplies, it was a great success. In addition, the beaches provided us with excellent waves and additional memories. Thank you for making. our trip so wonderful Sharen!

Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had the most marvelous time at the Cottage on Ellery. The cottage was charming, roomy and comfortable. We loved the privacy of the master bedroom by itself on the second floor along with a master bath. The king bed was very, very comfortable. Downstairs, the kitchen had many of the comforts of home. We really appreciated the fact that either the cleaner/manager or the prior tenants left items for us to use, i.e. condiments, paper goods, etc. We left most of those items as well and were happy to do so. The kids and we were never on top of one another, and looked forward to spending time at the house simply because it was so charming and "homey". The outdoor shower was an awesome treat for all and we loved sitting by the fire pit at night. All in all a perfect week. Can't wait to visit again next year!
