Reeds Island - - - Exquisite home with the finest Hilo address, a Virginia Brooks McDonald, FAIA, architect-designed home, overlooking the Wailuku River.

Brooks is the author of Heating or Cooling Your Building Naturally, Solar Architectural Solutions. The architect relates how vertical ventilation and controlled daylighting--to the exclusion of air-conditioning and daytime electric lighting can be applied. Every space is filled with interesting angles, views and light...and STUNNING views of the river. Enjoy the incredible view from the spacious deck and watch the different moods of the river and the rain forest surrounding you. This home is incredibly private and exceptionally designed for comfort and style, all in one. The master suite is separated on one end of the home featuring a large office and resting area, and a spacious, master bathroom suite, complete with walk-in shower, and Japanese Furo bath room, both overlooking the river. The living room is very spacious with soaring, exposed beam ceilings and open to the kitchen. What a terrific bright and functional space with lots of counter space, a view of the river, pantry and more. The guest bedroom is also very comfortable with its own en suite bathroom and even a mini bar sink. There is also a separate walk-in storage closet and spacious laundry room on this side of the home as well. The home is decorated with midcentury modern furniture and pieces from Design Within Reach.

Hardwood floors run throughout this home, tying in nicely to the cedar exposed beam ceilings above.

Located just a couple short minutes from downtown, this location is one of Hilo's premier neighborhoods.... with an exceptional house to do the location, and site overlooking Wailuku River.

Within a short 10-15 minute walk you are in downtown Hilo with access to buses, shops and restaurants.

The house is located along a river. The porch is fenced in but there are areas that are not. If you are traveling with young children, we welcome children but we want to make you aware of this.

Rooms with a Waterfall View

  • 5 of 5

We loved our staycation here to celebrate our 60th birthdays. We live on the Big Island but rarely take time to relax and enjoy Hilo town.

Reed Island is a residentail community but the architect who designed this home made sure privacy exist from every angle.

Minimalist by nature; it is infused with art throughout the home. Beds could use an upgrade and the home has seen better days. All in all; being island people we are use to geckos, and the 'song of the Koki Frog at night.

The views are spectacular and just outside your door; follow an easy path to sit under a tree; hear the waterfall and meditate, as Bhodi Satva would.

Or, imagine the ancients who passed before you in this magical place and be greatful.

The host Jacqueline is just a text away.

A stunning property and great architecture with serious issues.

  • 2 of 5

The property is stunning. The house architecture is great. Unfortunately, the waterfalls are loud and the tree frogs deafening. The house is dated and poorly outfitted. No dishwasher, no coffee maker, no TV (ok by us), no stereo (or iPad player). The furnishing is of poor quality and is uncomfortable. Poorly maintained, light switches by the dozen unidentified. Screens with holes letting in the mosquitos, and the level of cleanliness is poor. It does have an attractive out in the country feel but is close enough to the city centre that it is walkable. Generally, though, not recommended.

Beautiful. Remote. Quite.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home. Much bigger then expected. Managed and maintained well but my only v. small complaint is that the nooks and crannies could use a good cleaning—I found some dead insects and huge dust balls around the home. Remote part of the island—not touristy and just what we wanted. Close to nature. No distractions v. quiet. I would definitely recommend to friends.

Deeply disappointed

  • 1 of 5

First the good stuff: The house is beautifully designed with tasteful art and furniture. Very quiet (we liked the white noise from the falls and the frogs) and private yet just a short walk to town. Hilo is a great town to explore on foot. Don't miss the market for all your fruits and veggies, with the biggest market days on Wednesday and Saturday!

Now for the bad: The house has NOT been maintained and it was FULL of mould and mildew - on the cutlery, the dishes, the shower and shower curtain, the ceiling, the lights, the microwave, the fridge door. All drawers and cupboards smelled really funky. Laundry room shelves with hair, dust and dead insects. Some of the windows were rusted in the open position. The outdoor patio furniture and floor were with filthy with gecko poop. The microwave had food residue in it and the coffee maker had the last guest's old coffee moulding in the filter! Dirty area rug in the living room. Leaking kitchen faucet. Broken toilet seat. Two leaking skylights. All appliances have seen better days but they worked. Countertops pulling away from the walls and the resulting cracks were full of assorted debris.

While it can be challenging to maintain an older home in such high humidity, what was once a lovely home has deteriorated into disrepair. We contacted the property manager right away to share our concerns but it took her 3 days to respond. She has promised to refund the cleaning fee and our damage deposit - we shall see. Obviously, we could not change properties at the height of the Christmas season and furthermore, we had paid top dollar to stay at this property. What should have been an amazing family holiday was overshadowed by such a disappointing property. We simply cannot recommend that anyone stay here until considerable efforts are made to clean and renew this place.

a lovely, peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We highly recommend the house as the perfect setting for a peaceful, private retreat with lovely amenities. The view of the river and lush plants was quite extraordinary, even in a Hilo downpour!

Like staying in an art gallery!

  • 4 of 5

This home is absolutely beautiful -- modern design with prize-winning paintings by a noted Hawaiian artist! It definitely is like staying in an art gallery. I would have given 5 stars, except the kitchen could have been more fully equipped. But any deficits were more than compensated for by the beauty of the home, the location on the river near Rainbow Falls, and the overall ambience.
