Located in the quaint riverside village of Morattico VA, this charming vacation home provides a relaxing getaway from city and urban living. The home is situated on an acre of land and provides waterfront access to the Lancaster Creek with views of the Rappahannock River. There are three bedrooms and two full bathrooms (one with tub and one with shower), two screened porches (front and back) and a spacious living room with working fireplace. Five ceiling fans throughout the house and in each bedroom along with central A/C keep the home comfortable all summer long. A dock on the property with built-in seating provides water access for canoes/kayaks, crabbing/fishing, entertaining, and watching incredible sunsets over the water. Two kayaks with paddles and life jackets are available at the house. (Water at the end of the dock is about 1 foot deep during very low tides.)
The house has a total of two beds (king and queen). A twin-size portable mattress is also provided. The third bedroom contains a sectional sofa that sleeps two adults comfortably and the living room sofa will sleep one adult comfortably. Please note that the sofas are not pull-out sleepers, but were selected based on being comfortable for sleeping (ie, seat cushions lay flat and the back cushions can be removed to make up twin-sized bed sleeping arrangements.
Morattico is a quiet, relaxing place with it’s own tiny waterfront post office, white frame church and a Waterfront Museum. The Museum is located just a few doors down and provides a glimpse of history into the once vibrant oyster, fishing, and crabbing industry that sustained the town for many years. You’ll also learn about the history of the town and Northern Neck going back to 1608 when Captain John Smith met the Morauchtacund Indians. Gradually since the 1960’s the town has slowly transformed into a vacation and second-home destination.
The Northern Neck is home to nine wineries, known as the Chesapeake Wine Trail. They include Athena Vineyards, General’s Ridge Vineyard, Good Luck Cellars, The Dog & Oyster, Ingleside Vineyards, Oak Crest Vineyard & Winery, Vault Field Vineyards, Jacey Vineyards, and Belle Mount Vineyards.
Located adjacent to the town of Morattico is Belle Isle State Park, with the entrance 5 miles from the house. The park features a beach, picnic facilities, public boat landing, canoes, motor boat rentals, free concerts, and nature trails.
Many interesting historical attractions are nearby, including George Washington’s birthplace located on Pope’s Creek off the Potomac River. Some other noteworthy stops include Stratford Hall (Robert E. Lee’s restored plantation home), Christ Church (built in 1735), Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library, Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, and Menokin (home of Declaration of Independence signer Francis Lightfoot Lee).
Some favorite restaurants with waterview dining include Merroir in Topping (Rappahannock Oyster Company), The Tiki Bar at Windmill Point, Horn Harbor in Burgess and The Crazy Crab in Reedville. Two restaurants are within 10 minutes of the house: The Oaks and Corner Bar & Grill. Other great places to check out are The Car Wash Cafe, Northern Neck Burger Co., Trick Dog Cafe, Rappahannock Grill, Relish, and Lancaster Tavern.
Golfers can head to the par-71 at King Carter Golf Club or the par-72 course at Golden Eagle. Both offer challenges to players of all levels, with holes set amidst a beautiful natural backdrop. The 19th hole at both courses offers dining opportunities.
Cell phone coverage: Verizon and AT&T have towers throughout the Northern Neck peninsula. Sprint and Virgin do not have towers, but their signals are adequate at the house since towers from across the river reach Morattico. 2G coverage is available from T-Mobile.
Morattico is located 70 miles from Richmond, 115 miles from DC, 95 miles from Norfolk, and 145 miles from Baltimore. The closest major airports are in Richmond (72 miles) and DC’s Reagan National (108 miles).
I grew up in Richmond, VA and spent many hours each summer on the James river, Chesapeake Bay and intercostal waters of Eastern Shore Virginia where my dad grew up. Naturally I just love being on the river in the Northern Neck of VA and enjoy all the great things about this part of the state--fresh produce and seafood, beautiful parks, wineries, historical landmarks, etc.
Scott Ward purchased this house in 2010
We (4 adults) spent several days over Thanksgiving. There was plenty of places to spread out between the roomy kitchen, 2 screened porches, living room, den, and big backyard with swing and dock. The village is quiet and quaint, perfect for walking or cycling with lots of eagle-spotting opportunities and side roads to explore. The Northern Neck/Middle Peninsula area is surrounded by water galore ("All Roads are Dead End") with superb restaurants, unique shops, historical splendor, and small town charm. Scott, the owner, is amenable and easy to work with. Our only complaint - the tiniest - is that the kitchen is so well equipped with cooking/serving/entertaining paraphernalia, there is little room to store groceries if you prefer to nest in more than eat out.
If you are looking for a very nice, comfortable, and extremely well equipped home away from barking dogs, sirens and traffic, this is the place. The silence is almost deafening. Golden !! Bring a good book(s) and a fishing rod and enjoy. The sunrises off the front screened in porch and the sunsets from the back screened in porch were too tempting to resist taking pictures. I might even frame a couple. A mid-morning short drive to Kilmarnock offers all that anyone would need to pick up groceries, bait and supplies of all types from their 3 grocery stores and a Wal-Mart and many more businesses. But do have lunch (or dinner) somewhere like Lee's Restaurant; family style, reasonable prices and really good food. There are numerous other quaint little specialty shops to walk around and shop as well. And everybody waves at you!!!! Very friendly area. Irvington is just a couple of miles south of Kilmarnock and offers more of the same. Probably a good idea to bring a cooler, get groceries last and ice down before heading back as it's maybe 20 to 30 minutes back home. As far as sightseeing, the Morattico Museum (about a block and a half away from the house) is really a trip back to memory lane. We spent an hour there. Also, Christ Church near Lancaster was well worth the $5. admission and guided and self-guided tour. That was another worthwhile hour spent learning about Robert King Carter and his emancipation of slaves and extraordinary architectural skills. The old church incredible. There is more at the house than the description tells actually. There is indeed a refrig with icemaker and the owner keeps upgrading things it seems. Nice. I have never stayed at a rental home with both charcoal and gas grill. Just like home ! OK. book it if you like, but don't tell too many people. I want to chance to come back !!
The property was clean and gave us such an upbeat feel the minute we walked in. The décor is really well done. The living room has doors which close it off from traffic, allowing the use of this room for comfortable sleeping accommodations in addition to all the other areas. With the doors even the early risers can move around and not bother that room's inhabitants.
We were continually surprised to find unexpected useful items in the house to enhance our stay. Just a delight! Blenders, top notch pots and pans, great bowls and dishes, plethora of glasses and cups, coffee maker, coffee filters, cutlery, and on and on. Just everything! It was too hot when we were there, although we stayed plenty cool inside, but there were outside games provided, binoculars, kayaks, both a charcoal and gas grill, and we spent lots of time out on the screened in porches, with the overhead fans running !
Perfect place for us and our friends. We will definitely count this as a contender in the future. Make sure to sign the guest book and you will see I am not alone in my very high opinion of this little gem.
(Thanks to our landlord for being so responsive when we had questions!)
Our stay at Morattico far exceeded our expectations. The house was equipped with everything one needed for a pleasant vacation. The kitchen was well stocked The screened in porches were just what the doctor ordered. My grandchildren came for a visit and thoroughly enjoyed the games, exploring the entire property and walking down to the water! The peace and quiet was a true prescription for a delightful and pleasant vacation. The ability to use Wifi would have enhanced the stay as well as better tv reception.
Excellent little space. Clean, furnishings super comfy, kitchen well-equipped! ❤️
The house is quaint, with all the basics. The owner Scott was responsive and accommodated our every request. We had a few extra dogs, and people, and that was not a problem. Screened in patios on both sides of the house were very comfortable, and breezy. The large back yard was perfect for our dogs, a game of cornhole, and throwing the football around. We had a great time, although the weather did not cooperate with us. Would bring your own fishing pole though; the ones in the corner are pretty much decorative.
Would have given 5 stars, but the 3rd bedroom would have been more useful with an actual bed in it. I will admit, the couches are comfortable enough to sleep in.
