Mountain Shadows began in 1975 when our father, Steve Clausman, purchased the property and gave it the name. What a view and what a house. But a house is a house. “Clausie” always had an open door policy and filled the place with a continuous cast of characters from all walks of mankind. We called them friends and family.
Brian Clausman purchased this villa in 1975
We just completed a major remodel of the property. Many of the kids that grew up around the house went on to learn a trade, then came back to work on Mountain Shadow’s in 2014-2015. It became a special job for everyone involved. All the old stories came back to the surface and the construction project became a reunion……with new stories
The Mountain Shadows open door policy is now available to your friends and family for private lodging. We created the perfect setting. You Create your own memories. Enjoy.
The pictures of this home do not do it justice. It is impeccably clean and designed to be simple and spacious, but with an attention to detail that made our stay comfortable and memorable. We arrived after a long day of cross country travel just in time for the most beautiful sunset, and immediately settled in for a family holiday gathering. The kitchen is spectacular and well-equipped, and we prepared everything from Christmas morning pancakes on the griddle and cookies in the oven, to feasts on the large outdoor kitchen grill. The fireplace was already stacked with wood and ready to be lit. The beds are comfortable, and the little things like strategically placed night lights and lots of plugs for recharging things helped us to feel at home. We explored Foresthill and especially loved Auburn's old town feel - lots of restaurants and not a chain store in sight. We also enjoyed traveling down Mosquito Ridge and hiking, and took day trips to Lake Tahoe for skiing and a change of scenery, not that we needed one. A favorite activity was just sitting in the sun on the deck, reading a book and enjoying the view. We would love to return some day.
We got married at Monte Verde Inn but decided to also get mountain shadows to have a WEEKEND wedding!! We are a military family and 99% of our guest traveled from very far to share our special weekend! We got miners camp 11 cabins also so our family would have a place to stay up the mountain! Our whole family love shadows and miners camp!! I can't thank Brian, Wendy, and leaf enough!!!! They were amazing and tended to anything we needed! Even ran out of TP and leaf dilivered at almost midnight!!! They are such wonderful people and you won't be sorry staying here or miners camp!!! THE VIEW is worth every penny!!! Wish we could do our whole weekend over because we enjoyed it so much!!! Thank you again for everything!!! I would give 10 stars if it let me!!

We were beyond thrilled with the entire experience of staying at Mountain Shadows! From booking to check out, everything was easy! We booked it way in advance of our wedding to ensure my extended family had a big enough place to stay and we are so happy we did! The house and grounds are beautiful and had plenty of space for my family of 15, including entertainment for 5 kids. It was not only an amazingly beautiful and perfect place for my family to stay the weekend, but we also did the rehearsal dinner in this incredible setting with 45 people, comfortably. Everyone commented on how perfect it was! Brian was very accessible when we had questions and his team is so easy to work with to get settled during the weekend. My parents wanted to go see the house a few weeks before the wedding in order to better plan the rehearsal dinner and Brian was amazingly accommodating to invite them up to tour it. If you are looking for an unrivaled view and beautiful accommodations, this is the place! We hope we can find an excuse to stay another weekend soon!
My husband and I had our wedding at Mountain Shadows in late August and it was an absolute dream. The weather was high 70's/low 80's but the surrounding tall trees kept things nice and shaded after 2/3pm. The house itself is huge and has tons of amentities - it also was large enough for both our immediate families to stay there. We used the outside patio and grass area for the ceremony and the reception. The outside spaces are set up really well so everything flowed perfectly. All of our guests were in awe of the view that Mountain Shadows provides from sunrise to sunset. We can't say enough good things about this place.
If you're looking for a wedding venue or a family reunion, this is your place. We had 50 people at this property and the house was more than big enough for people to move around at their leisure. There's many places to sit and relax/eat/drink.
We look forward to returning for another special trip in the future - hopefully sooner than later.
We had our wedding at Mountain Shadows this July. To say that the venue was perfect would be an understatement. Every detail of design took what we thought was a pretty great plan and blew it out of the water. From the amazing sunrises to dinner on the expansive patio while the sunset the setting was spectacular. We wanted the weekend to feel like a family reunion with the sense that folk could come and go as they pleased - turns out every inch of the property was used with pockets of people here, there and every where.
I prepared a large portion of the food for the weekend - the two kitchens, expansive counter/table space, cooking surfaces and ovens made it a relative piece of cake.
The ceremony was held on the back lawn and with the Tahoe National Forest as our backdrop we could not have hoped for better. We also rented the newly finished Miners Camp for the all guests who were not immediate family. Just a short walk away and designed with the same care and attention as Shadows the little cabins were perfect for our guests to retreat and sleep between festivities.
Beyond the meticulous design, the spaciousness of the both the property and the building, the sure beauty - Brian was amazing to work with. On and off the phone over the course of five months Brian's communication went above and beyond that of good customer service.
What we had hoped for was a sense of family and friends around the fire (though we never had a fire) has now turned into a conversation related to a bigger goal - a yearly family gathering. Everyone of our immediate family members wants to return next year.
Thank you Brian and Team - we hope to return next year.
