Quaint Cottage on All-Sports Van Etten Lake: Sail, Fish, Ski, Deck-Time!

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

A beautiful lake front cottage with recent renovations, this property is located just north of the island on Van Etten lake. We rent for 5 night minimum mid-June through Labor Day and 2-night minimum the rest of the year. The lake is an all-sports lake frequented by fisherman, motor boaters, skiers, canoers, kayakers and sailors alike. Sit by the dock on a summer evening and enjoy beautiful sunsets. When the light is gone, enjoy a fire by the lake until the stars come out. Small sailboats are also a treat on the water, and the lake is large enough to provide hours of enjoyment as you are pushed about by the wind. You can also bring or rent a canoe or kayak and paddle up the Pine River at the north end of the lake where Bald Eagles, Whitetail deer, and a host of waterfowl are routinely seen. If fishing is your passion, bring your boat and try your luck with the Walleye, Northern Pike, Bass and pan-fish for which the lake is known. The dock is also a great option if you have children who might like to try their hand with pan fish. If you are a golfer then the courses located just a few miles away may be of interest. Ranked #1 Best New Resort Course in the US by Golf Digest, Lakewood Shores offers three unique golf experiences. It's also located in a quiet location in which neighbors are not the loud, partying type which means they also appreciate quiet, respectful people nearby.

The cottage has a large deck area where we spend most of our time in the summer. Adirondack chairs provide comfortable reading areas along with a patio table, chairs and umbrella where meals can be enjoyed on warm summer days. A Weber charcoal grill is also available for use.

The cottage itself includes 3 bedrooms that provide sleeping for 6 people. The master bedroom with queen size log bed and hardwood floor includes a half-bath and a gas wall fireplace and is conveniently positioned on the lakeside with glass sliding doors that allow access to the large deck area. We usually leave the door open in order to enjoy the summer breeze and the sounds of the lake. The other two bedrooms are both carpeted. The second bedroom has a full-size bed with a writing desk and armoire, while the third bedroom has a daybed with a twin mattress and pull out trundle also with a twin mattress. All bed linens are included.

The lake-side living area includes a large picture window and sliding glass door with full access to the large deck area, seating for 6--sofa, love seat & antique rocker, carpeted floor, wood stove and a new HD Samsung Smart TV. Access to Netflix movies and other internet channels are included along with Wi-Fi. In-room air conditioning was added in 2018 in the living room and one bedroom. A small library is also available for the readers of the group, along with several board games in a corner closet in the third bedroom.

The kitchen includes refrigerator, gas stove/oven, microwave, coffee maker, Kitchen Aid mixer, pots & pans, drinking glasses, plates, bowls, baking ware, cutting boards, silverware, and other kitchen utensils required for cooking great vacation meals.

Bathrooms have a Nordic feel with tongue and groove pine walls. The shared bathroom is a 3/4 bath with a 5 foot shower and clear glass sliding door. The second is a 1/2 bath in the master bedroom. Two towels and wash clothes per guest are provided.

The Oscoda area provides plenty of options for additional activity. Lumbermen's Monument is only about a 20 minute drive on River Rd. where beautiful vistas of the AuSable River are enjoyed along with the opportunity to learn about the once-thriving lumber industry of the area. Canoe liveries are also nearby if you would like to make a day of it and paddle one of the most beautiful rivers of North America. In July the AuSable River Canoe Marathon takes place and is a rather unique and exciting event as paddlers begin in Grayling on Friday night and race all night along the 120 mile section of the river, finishing in Oscoda on Saturday. Just a few miles away, Lake Huron provides long, sandy public beaches and cool, clean, Great Lakes swimming. Easy public parking with a great children's playground on the shores of Lake Huron. (Full disclosure: Van Etten lake is not the best for swimming due to a weed issue currently being addressed. We also have a seawall, not a beach, as do most Van Etten lake properties.) Charter fishing on Lake Huron is also available on privately owned boats in Harrisville or Oscoda. Want fresh fish but not the fishing? Visit Wellmans' Sporting Goods in Oscoda for a variety of fresh catches including whitefish, salmon and sometimes Lake Trout. Check the local calendar for free, live concerts in the band shell on the beach in downtown Oscoda located in the park which includes play equipment for children and a handicapped accessible beach area. And don't forget to check out the excellent, highly rated golf courses at Lakeshore Resort just around the corner. Three ice cream vendors downtown are also a great treat in which to indulge the taste buds.

About Duane M. Harris

My wife, Lynn, and I purchased the property in December of 1993 and have enjoyed raising our son where he learned to fish and sail and enjoy the gift of a waterfront cottage. Steady improvements have also been part of ownership and now that our son is married and on his own, we've decided to share the property we enjoy so much.

Duane M. Harris purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Duane M. Harris chose Oscoda Township

We chose this property primarily because it was near family who also owned a lakefront cottage nearby. We've enjoyed the variety of activities available in this area from hunting, fishing, biking, and sailing to hiking, canoeing and kayaking. With Lake Huron so near, Great Lakes swimming and salmon fishing are just a short drive away. There is always something exciting to do!

What makes this cottage unique

There are many features we enjoy about the property. Recent upgrades include the addition of a second bathroom and remodeling of the lakeside bedroom with tongue and groove pine paneling, a cedar log queen size bed and a gas corner fireplace. In-room air conditioning was added in the living room and one bedroom in 2018. We love it! We also enjoy the large deck where we spend most of our time--weather permitting--reading in the Adirondack chairs or entertaining friends around the table with a glass of wine and great conversation. The remodeled and nicely equipped kitchen provides great space for cooking delicious meals when we have the time to prepare and experiment. It is a cozy, warm place in which to enjoy time off all the while enjoying the view of the lake through the living room picture window.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are from Atlanta, Georgia and my significant other had never been up north in Michigan. I decided for my 60th birthday this year I wanted to spend some time in Oscoda, before we would do an annual visit with family in Livonia, Michigan.I searched for a cottage that was on Van Etten Lake. I wanted to reminisce about my time back from 1963-1968 when my brother and sister and Grandma would spend summers at my Uncle Tom's cottage. The cottage was better than the description and laid out great for 6-7 people staying there.

Duane's place seemed like the one that would fit out needs. Luckily it was available when I needed it. It had a large deck, long dock and great views of the lake. I was inviting up family and some would stay with us for a night or two, and some would stay at a hotel. I spoke with Duane and asked a lot of questions which he was very helpful in answering questions about fishing and licenses etc. I told him 48 years ago I was last there and could not wait to see the changes. Upon getting to the town and seeing the Diary Queen, The Au Sable Inn, the Scared Heart of Mary church just brought back wonderful fun memories of my past.

What a pleasant surprise upon entering the cottage and how clean, and cute and quaint it was with lighthouse dear, knotty pine wood and the addition that was lovely. It seemed so much bigger than I thought it would be, knowing family would be staying but it never seemed crowded. We had good weather, a little rain on one day, cooked out, boated around the lake, did not catch many fish but did catch a few little perch off the dock. We went to try and find the old cottage ( knew it was a different house) found it, the boathouse had been painted a different color, we docked and went up to see the family. I got very emotional standing there looking at the place that I spent as a kid and coming to this cottage was the reason I could this. We were able to go inside the cottage and tell them all of our memories as kids. They were so nice, they had built the house around the cottage. We enjoyed our bonfire, making s'mores, canoeing down the Au Sable, ( catching lots of bass there) sitting on the deck watching the sunset and feeding the ducks. We created many new memories while remembering the old ones. This place was just perfect, and would rent again in

Beautiful home and perfect place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

This home is beautiful, well cared for, well stocked, and a great place to stay. I hope to come back. The large deck is a perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee, read a book, and enjoy the view and breeze off the lake. The master bedroom was a little tight but the sliding doors to the deck made for a nice cool breeze....great for sleeping. The other 2 rooms worked good for our 3 teens. The kitchen was a nice size and well stocked. We played cards every night until midnight around the kitchen table. Too windy most nights for a fire outside but nice there was a firepit by the lake and a swing. Fishing was very good. We rented pontoon boat for 3 days and caught lots. Close drive to grocery store, Lake Huron, and sight seeing. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We have many good memories of our week.

Peaceful lakefront property

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very well setup and provided a very relaxing week for us. Top quality establishment. Only negative was that the lake had been treated days before we arrived and was not cleared up yet. But that's lake living. Overall an excellent property.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the positive review, John. Happy to hear your week at the cottage was relaxing which is what we certainly hope for all our guests. Sorry the weed treatment impacted your stay. Unfortunately you drew the unlucky straw relative to the treatment which only happens a couple of times a summer. If you're ever in the area again, please look us up! Take care.

What a cozy comfy home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days here for a family wedding and so enjoyed the cottage. It is centrally located in the area so we did do a lot of exploring. We also enjoyed fishing on the lake with a rental pontoon from Sunnybunns, what a friendly bunch. The cottage was clean and comfortable and was affordable.

Nice little cottage in a great location and on a very nice, quiet lake

  • 5 of 5

My wife and 2 small children stayed at this property in August 2017. Our first impressions were great. The cottage was nicely decorated and had everything we needed. The kids instantly ran down to the lake which had a nice dock with shallow water (probably less than 3/12 feet to the end of the dock). Owners are great and gave us access to more chairs and grill should we want to use it. The entire length of our stay things were very quiet and relaxing. Very close to the city and access to the public beach on Lake Huron. Kids loved the small splash park. Grocery shopping close by for when you forget something :). We didn't know if we wanted to stay on Lake Huron or an inland lake. so glad we chose Van Etten lake. It was warmer for the kids. I would recommend this property!! Thanks for a great time.

Very clean, well maintained and stocked with everything needed for the week

  • 5 of 5

Nice deck off the back of the cottage for entertaining. It was nice waking up in the morning to the view of the lake. We left the door wall open all night and the breeze off the lake made the night comfortable. Every room had a fan and beds were comfortable. Kitchen had everything needed to cook and freezer is stocked with plenty of frosty mugs. The lake was great for swimming, tubing and fishing. Fishing was good and caught plenty of perch and bass. The biggest bass was a 24" just over 5 pounds. Nice!! We enjoyed the camp fires at night and after 10pm it was surprising quiet for the weekend. I would rent this cottage again in the future. Thanks Duane!!
