We are Michael and Barbra Fox. We became empty nesters in 2014 and decided now it’s our turn. We are very fortunate to find our own little piece of hidden tropical paradise, and the opportunity to open a small beachfront ecolodge mini-resort in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. We were fortunate to find in our opinion, the most amazing hidden piece of paradise on earth. With it came three existing homes, all in need of some TLC. When we found the property it densely overgrown, but with lush botanical gardens full of Heliconia, Birds of Paradise, and colorful Orchids. The property was full of life with carefree monkeys playing in the forest, shells were dropping to the ground from the scarlet macaws and toucans eating nuts from the trees above us. The property sits alongside a quiet remote beach in a very private jungle setting. We have two swimming pools, but taking a swim in the ocean is all too inviting, as the water is warm and smooth as glass. It’s shallow with no wake or undercurrent and safe for all ages with no worries.
It took about a year as we assembled crews of local tradesmen restoring the estate back to its original condition. We rebuilt structures, adding two new pools along with building extensive walking trails throughout the tropical gardens for nature hikes. We opened our doors on December 19th, 2014, booked our first guests and our business was launched!
What makes us different?
We decided our concept would be different. Through our experiences we realized a niche that was being overlooked. We would offer our eco style villa homes as a private beachfront mini-resort, inviting individual parties to use exclusively one group at a time. We provide an all-inclusive alternative to vacationers wanting to receive the same five star amenities of a resort but while enjoying your time together in a private setting, without the masses of a typical resort.
We offer two beautifully furnished villa homes on the 3.5 acre beachfront property, each one having its own private pool and deck area. Our property sits on the edge of our own private beach, and surrounded by luscious tropical jungle. The Osa is home to about 400 species of birds and it's a natural habitat to four species of monkeys.
Our villas offer A/C throughout and sleep 6 to 14 people comfortably. Our Garden Villa is 900 sq. ft.with it own fully equipped kitchen, with it's own terrace and swimming pool. The beachfront villa is 3200 sq. ft. and has a large fully equipped kitchen, a wet bar, and a great room for entertaining social gatherings. The large pool deck and terrace offers a gas grill and large enough for any large gathering, guaranteeing great pool parties day and night.
In the mornings? Well you can expect to sit and drink coffee on our balcony watching the monkeys playing as they jump from tree to tree and never grow tired of watching them entertain you. You will probably spot a dolphin or two as they swim past the beach. You might even see a launching Humpback whale cruising past our beach, all without ever leaving your poolside seat..
The Whale Resort is a great choice for group vacations at a very affordable price of about $115 pp per night. This property is one of a kind, offering an opportunity to enjoy your own exclusive private beachfront resort, with every amenity you should expect with any five-star experience!
We offer a very private out of the way setting, but we are only 10 minutes from Puerto Jiménez, a larger port town that offers every amenity such a grocery stores, clothing and souvenir shopping, restaurants, night clubs, medical facilities, pharmacies, banks, ATM’s and a commercial airport. If you don’t want to make a trip into town, we have the local Canaza grocery and liquor store about 5 minutes from the property.
We have a 24-hour concierge, along with a full-time staff taking care of the gardens, the pool, the house cleaning, and laundry services. We also offer private chef services. We have our own 5 star chef who studied culinary for 3 years in the US. We choose not to limit him with a menu and usually just turn him loose, but you name it, he’ll make it!
The Whale Resort offers several tours and they are designed for all ages.
A Taste of the Golfo Dulce
Our Very Own Private Customized 1/2 Day water tour on the Golfo Dulce Bay where you will be picked up from our beach. The package includes whale watching where you will search for humpback whales as they migrate twice a year to the Golfo Dulce. You will also have the opportunity to swim with the pod of about 300 dolphins that live in the bay year round. We also search or manta rays, sea turtles, schools of fish and sea birds. We also stop along the way to do some snorkeling where you can explore our coral reefs and the colorful fish that surround you. This excursion always proves to be one of biggest highlights of our guest’s trip! We are proud to boast that we have the very best and most knowledgeable guide in all of the Osa.
Hike to the Tigre River waterfalls
This is one of my favorite tours and one you don’t want to miss. We take a short hike up the Tigre River, sometimes through the river, sometimes crossing it to trails and hidden paths. We stop along the way to see the locals panning for gold. They are happy and willing to let you take a swing at it yourself, offering their pan and some quick instructions and before you know it, you will have your own little flakes of gold. It’s common for these panners to mine anywhere from $25 - $50 of gold per day, but sometimes hitting a nice nugget, bringing a nicer pay day. Then as we continue up the river we eventually come to a beautiful waterfall to swim in, and if you want, you can make a couple of safe jumps! You can swim back into a shallow cave and take a quick pic to send back on FB no doubt! The falls also have a nice spot to lay back in to enjoy a nice shoulder massage! We have some fun in the water, then enjoy a beverage and some fruit that we pack with us up the river.
We offer guided horseback tours with two trips to choose from.
Rain forest horseback tour - You can choose an excursion through trails of the tropical rain forest of Matapalo to witness the many types of tropical vegetation and wildlife including various species of monkeys, birds, and maybe even a jaguar along the way.
Beachfront horseback tour - You can choose a trip through Puerto Jimenez to see firsthand some of the cultural sites and meet and great some of the most genuine native Costarican people. We will stop along the way for lunch to enjoy some typical Costarican cuisine, then continue on to the beach to enjoy some one of the richest coastlines the country has to offer.
Zip Lining Tour that also includes a tour of our butterfly garden and serpentarium
Our zip line canopy tour has 11 platforms, two repelling lines, and a Tarzan swing. The guided trip takes you in an air-conditioned van being accompanied by entertaining English speaking guides that will explain various types of plants and tropical vegetation as we make stops along the way. Then we arrive to our ranchero deep into the mountains. There you will be greeted with a fresh tropical drink as you are given a short safety demonstration preparing for your thrill seeking mission to sore like an Eagle through the rain forest canopy course.
Tour of our Botanical Gardens
Once boarding the boat from our beach we take you across the bay to Casa Orquídea, a beautifully landscaped private tropical garden with hundreds of species of ornamental and edible plants along with various species of birds, loaded with too many varieties of humming birds to count. After you enjoy our guided tour, there is time to take a swim on the beach and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Our Sunset Sailing Cruise
Again you will be picked up mid-afternoon from our beach to catch the best breeze coming off of the bay. You will enjoy a tasty meal prepared on board along with your favorite cocktail beverage. We stop along the way and drop anchor to swim and snorkel some coral reefs. Then capping it all off, you will catch a sunset at the mouth of the bay!
A Tour of the Wild Life Sanctuary
You will be taken by boat to the largest wild animal rehabilitation reserve where injured animals are brought in from all over the country. First when coming ashore you will be greeted by ‘Sweety”, a Spider monkey that was rescued and rehabilitated, and never left. This tour is a great opportunity to see up close and in person the many different varieties of wild animals that live in the forests and jungles of Costa Rica. You can see Macaws, monkeys, Ocelots, Spider, Howler, Squirrel, and Cappuccino monkeys, sloths, Anteaters, Agouti, Coatimundi, Ocelots, and even jaguars.
For you surfers, we are just a short drive away from some of the best surfing on the planet.
There is also kayaking and paddle boarding available to have some fun on the water at your own leisure.
There is also some excellent deep sea fishing in the area with a large variety of different types of fishing, depending on what you prefer. The marlin population is very plentiful in the area, so you can enjoy some of the best Marlin fishing on the planet. We also offer our own Deep Sea Marlin Sport Fishing Charter package.
Our Five Star Amenities include:
All Daily Transportation Services
Daily House Keeping Services and Towel Changes
In-House Mani/Pedi Services

Words are hard to describe this property. It's a 3.5 acre beachfront property with three homes on it. It has the best of all worlds because it sits on the shore of one of the most beautiful beaches on the Osa Peninsula, and sits in the middle of the most luscious tropical jungle, flooded with several varieties of Heliconia and delicate orchids too. We have trails and pathways winding through-out the property connecting all three houses on the property. It has 3 gated entrances, and when you go through the gate, it's like passing through to the other side, into a wonderland of Mother Natures tropical paradise!
It's hard enough to find a home directly on the beach in Costa Rica, but we found the perfect place! We are still pinching ourselves and want to share our experience with the whole world!
The Whale Resort is more than a beautiful place to stay, it is a wonderful experience that creates lasting memories. The staff at the resort took excellent care of us. Chef Steven's food was exceptional with new flavors and dishes typical of the area, but with a gourmet flare. Our concierge/host, Vanessa, arranged for us to visit local points of interest - a nearby waterfall, snorkeling spots, surfing, deep sea fishing, dolphin watching, horseback riding - whatever we wanted, she made it happen. One of my favorite spots was Rancho Raices de Osa (the Chocolate Farm). The tour was led by the owner, German, with Vanessa assisting as translator. He shared his extensive knowledge of and love for the different plants and trees on their vast farm. We were able to sit down to a savory lunch that included fresh chocolate milk, sweet fruit, and chocolate that our kids helped process. The tour also included a spa treatment of chocolate and coconut oil mask that left our faces and hands soft and smooth. The sites, sounds, and smells were exotic and beautiful. Your stay at the Whale Resort is just the beginning of a true Costa Rican adventure.
Our vacation at The Whale Resort was spectacular. We had a group of 13 ranging in age from 7 to 76 and this location had something for everyone. I loved seeing Costa Rica through the eyes of Vanessa and her crew. It is apparent that they have a great love for the area in which they live. The food was beyond words....Steven is an excellent Chef and takes great pride in everything he prepared for us. Not having to do laundry for 7 people for 12ish days was so very nice... thank you Bena!
I would absolutely recommend visiting The Whale Resort....in fact I already have! PuraVida!!!!!
Our MN family of 13 recently had 11 days over Christmas and New Years in paradise at The Whale Resort. Our 50th wedding anniversary in 2017 and a family trip of a life time was in order.
Planning a vacation for our family ages 7 to 76 where all of us could enjoy, learn and explore plus feel safe was fulfilled over and over again. With a group our size everyone had a different wish list from deep sea fishing, zip lining, riding horses on the beach, snorkeling, surfing lessons, seeing a multitude of dolphin via boat, swimming and soaking up the South Pacific sun, hearing, seeing and photographing as much jungle native wild life and beauty of the Osa Peninsula as possible to experiencing different Costa Rican customs, foods and drinks. This all and more was accomplished. We even toured a family owned chocolate making farm and actually made some chocolate.
Owner Mike Fox's crew of 6 for our large family of 13 was "Spectacular"! A word we used often.
From Vanessa who assisted us in every way possible. All our requests plus her excellent suggestions were arranged by her. She is very knowledgeable and well known in Puerto Jimenez and surrounding area. She runs The Whale Resort with a velvet glove.
Our chef Steven prepared delicious different meals every breakfast and dinner, with occasional special lunches. He is truly a culinary artisan. He needs to write a cookbook so his delicious preparations can be shared. One of our grandsons who loves my cooking and baking said Steven's meals have surpassed grandmas!😀
Erick was added because of our group size, was a fun spirited young man who assisted in the food preparations plus is a great guide when we spent a whole day at his favorite sport site beach learning how to dive for fresh oysters and watch him spear fish while underwater. Fresh raw oysters on the beach was truly a shore lunch to remember!!
Driver Olonso and large blue van was always available for our usage. He's an excellent driver who kept us safe and transported us to all of our escapades plus the one way 6 hr round trip from San Jose airport to the resort.
Dear quiet Bena our housekeeper and laundress kept us clean and comfortable.
Lastly comes Chabo the resort gardener. He took great pride in keeping the grounds beautifully manicured and pools cleaned.
The Whale Resort's all inclusive setting more then exceeded our wishes. We as a family experienced a trip of a lifetime we will always remember.
Muchas Gracis Vanessa and staff.
I've lived and worked in the Osa Peninsula and I know it's one of the most incredible places on earth...but not always the easiest place to visit. For this trip, I had both my elderly parents (70+) and my brother's young family (2 toddlers!) along. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. Whale Resort was perfect for all of us. The location is spectacular - Playa Juanito Mora is a gorgeous, serene bathtub for swimming, birdwatching, beachcombing. The grounds are ideal for birdwatching (macaws, toucans and aracaris, chachalacas, migratories, black hawks, shorebirds), monkey viewing or strolling at any time of day. The house is well designed and enclosed if you like your air conditioning or are nervous about insects. The pools are idyllic for kids and adults. The location is easy for airports, Puerto Jimenez restaurants, and all sorts of tour options. And above all, service is excellent: cleaniness impeccable, full service laundry, the meals were amazing (literally the best chocolate dessert I have ever eaten in my life, made with local ingredients). Vanessa the gerente was kind and informative to my family, and helpful when I needed to use her phone after my own took an unexpected pool dive. The only issue was spotty/nonexistent wifi, which the staff tried diligently to fix but could not... communication issues are a common problem in Osa. I would recommend the place to anyone.
From the moment you walk through the door and out onto the decking overlooking the stunningly beautiful view to the pool and ocean you know you have entered a paradise like nowhere else. Even in the green season as it rained almost every afternoon, October is a great time to visit. Everything was green and lush! It is an amazing place and like everyone else says, the photos don't do it justice. We had a big family group stay at the resort for my wife's birthday. 14 guests in all, using up 5 rooms and it still felt so spacious. The Villas are incredible with views of the ocean from every room. The pool is a wonderful oasis from the heat and you can hang over the edge of the pool all day just looking out at the view of the beach which is right at your feet. Esteven the in-house chef does an incredible job of feeding the guests with freshly cooked pancakes, omelets, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit for breakfast, the most delicious 5 course evening meals, with each night an exciting mystery to see what he had in store for us next. The staff was wonderful . Very unintrusive but efficient in maintaining the place. They even did our laundry each day which was included in their services. Each night they would arrange for a wonderful masseuse to come to the resort with each of us taking turns to get fantastic massages. And we had access to a big bus to drive all 14 of us around. Although we felt that we were the only ones on the planet because the 3.5 acre property was situated in the middle of the jungle, we were really on 10 minutes away from everything. There is a pulparia for quick grocery items, and a liquor store within walking distance. Access to the rest of the beach is cut off during high tide but most of the time we could walk for miles mostly with our feet in the warm beach water. There is a really great beach bar in town where all the surfers hang out and they do a very cheap lunch. We rented a couple of bikes for the week which were delivered to the villa making it fun to ride through the small village of Canaza, only about 2 minutes away. We really enjoyed just slowing down and escaping to The Whale Resort. We spent a lot of time just lazing by the pool watching the monkeys cruising through the trees above us, as we ate and drank too much. The perfect getaway. We will never forget out time at The Whale Resort. This vacation will be hard to top!
Thank you Mike and Barb for being such wonderful hosts! You have an amazing piece of paradise and thank y
The Lodge: There were 8 of us. A great house with a great layout comfortable for all of us and the grounds were truly paradise. It was clean and comfortable and easy to enjoy. The pool/patio area was fabulous, with plenty of room and a great place for the whole family to cook out, hang out throughout our days. The upstairs veranda was our favorite place in the mornings for relaxing, drinking coffee, and watching the incredible wildlife. The amazing star show up there is indescribable at night…we’ve never seen so MANY shooting stars. The beds were comfy and roomy. The Master was unbelievable. The rich and exotic woodwork throughout the house was beautiful.
The Staff: Jau and his wife Eli live on the grounds to serve their guests! They are amazing people, very helpful, incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about everything on the Osa. They keep the entire house very clean, and Chavo, who cares for the beautiful gardens, was super friendly too. He actually climbed about 50 ft. up a coconut tree on the beach and snatched us some fresh coconuts. You can catch your main course fishing or ask Jau to buy it in town, and Eli always prepares a delicious meal to our tastes (spicy here means nuclear so be sure to ask for mild), and then cleans everything! It was like dining out at home so we could enjoy the pool and beach before and after dinner.
The Food: Eli prepared fresh fruit plates and traditional gallo pinto and eggs for breakfast in the mornings. Eli cooked most of our evening meals but the kitchen is large and very user friendly, so we also cooked a few nights ourselves. Even then Eli refused to let us do the dishes. The staff was always so very accommodating from the minute we arrived. The choices at the grocery stores in town were much like home. The prices were a bit higher than at home, but not outrageous. When we didn’t eat in, we loved dinner at Giardino’s in Puerto Jimenez, where Julio has owned and operated his delicious little quaint Italian Restaurant for 34 years. He does all of the cooking himself and makes everything from scratch. The homemade lasagna was out of this world.
Other: We did several of the tours and had Jau arrange everything for us. We loved the kayaks and took them out into the bay a lot! We also did the whale watching tour and were fortunate enough to see several of them up and close! The boys went deep sea fishing one day and caught 4 Blue Marlin, one was over 500 lbs. It was a fishing experience of a lifetime.
