About the property

The property was full of wildlife with carefree monkeys playing in the forest, with shells dropping to the ground from the scarlet macaws and toucans eating nuts from the trees above us. The property sits alongside a quiet remote beach in a very private jungle setting. We have two swimming pools, but taking a swim in the ocean is all too inviting, as the water is warm and calm. It’s shallow with no wake or undercurrent and safe for all ages with no worries.

What makes us different?

We decided our concept would be different. Through our experiences we realized a niche that was being overlooked. We would offer our eco style villa homes as a private beachfront mini-resort, inviting individual parties to use exclusively one group at a time. We provide an all-inclusive alternative to vacationers wanting to receive the same five star amenities of a resort but while enjoying your time together in a private setting, without the masses of a typical resort.

We offer two beautifully furnished villa homes on the 3.5 acre beachfront property, each one having its own private pool and deck area. Our property sits on the edge of our own private beach, and surrounded by luscious tropical jungle. The Osa is home to about 400 species of birds and it's a natural habitat to four species of monkeys.

Our villas offer A/C throughout and sleep 6 to 14 people comfortably. Our Garden Villa is 900 sq. ft.with it own fully equipped kitchen, with it's own terrace and swimming pool. The beachfront villa is 3200 sq. ft. and has a large fully equipped kitchen, a wet bar, and a great room for entertaining social gatherings. The large pool deck and terrace offers a gas grill and large enough for any large gathering, guaranteeing great pool parties day and night.

In the mornings… you can expect to sit and drink coffee on our balcony watching the monkeys playing as they jump from tree to tree and never grow tired of watching them entertain you. You will probably spot a dolphin or two as they swim past the beach. You might even see a launching Humpback whale cruising past our beach, all without ever leaving your poolside seat..

The Whale Resort is a great choice for group vacations at a very affordable price of about $115 pp per night. This property is one of a kind, offering an opportunity to enjoy your own exclusive private beachfront resort, with every amenity you should expect with any five-star experience! Included in your stay, we have a 24/7 host and concierge, along with a full-time staff taking care of the gardens, the pool, the house cleaning and laundry services.

Yes we are in the middle of the jungle, but we are only 10 minutes from Puerto Jiménez, a larger port town that offers every amenity such a grocery stores, clothing and souvenir shopping, restaurants, night clubs, medical facilities, pharmacies, banks, ATM’s and a commercial airport. If you don’t want to make a trip into town, we have the local Canaza grocery and liquor store about 5 minutes from the property.

We also offer optional services including unlimited transportation and unlimited chef services. We can make your stay as hands free as you like. We can take the hassle out of renting your own car, providing a vehicle and a guide/driver 24/7. Don't want to deal with daily cooking and the mess? If you prefer to just enjoy your vacation all day every day and want your own private chef, we have our own in-house 5 star chef who studied culinary for 3 years and possibly the best chef on the Osa Peninsula! We choose not to limit him with a menu and usually just turn him loose, but you name it, he’ll make it!

The Whale Resort offers several tours and they are designed for all ages.

A Taste of the Golfo Dulce

Our Very Own Private Customized 1/2 Day water tour on the Golfo Dulce Bay where you will be picked up from our beach. The package includes whale watching where you will search for humpback whales as they migrate twice a year to the Golfo Dulce. You will also have the opportunity to swim with the pod of about 300 dolphins that live in the bay year round. We also search or manta rays, sea turtles, schools of fish and sea birds. We also stop along the way to do some snorkeling where you can explore our coral reefs and the colorful fish that surround you. This excursion always proves to be one of biggest highlights of our guest’s trip! We are proud to boast that we have the very best and most knowledgeable guide in all of the Osa.

Hike to the Tigre River waterfalls

This is one of my favorite tours and one you don’t want to miss. We take a short hike up the Tigre River, sometimes through the river, sometimes crossing it to trails and hidden paths. We stop along the way to see the locals panning for gold. They are happy and willing to let you take a swing at it yourself, offering their pan and some quick instructions and before you know it, you will have your own little flakes of gold. It’s common for these panners to mine anywhere from $25 - $50 of gold per day, but sometimes hitting a nice nugget, bringing a nicer pay day. Then as we continue up the river we eventually come to a beautiful waterfall for a swim, and if you want you can make a couple of safe jumps! You can swim back into a shallow cave and take a quick pic to send back on FB no doubt! The falls also have a nice spot to lay back in to enjoy a nice shoulder massage! We have some fun in the water, then enjoy a beverage and shore lunch. Yes we bring our chef and supplies too!

We offer guided horseback tours with two trips to choose from.

Rain forest horseback tour - You can choose an excursion through trails of the tropical rain forest of Matapalo to witness the many types of tropical vegetation and wildlife including various species of monkeys, birds along the way.

Beachfront horseback tour - You can choose a trip through Puerto Jimenez to see first hand some of the cultural sites and meet and great some of the most genuine native Costarican people. We will stop along the way for lunch to enjoy some typical Costarican cuisine, then continue on to the beach to enjoy some one of the richest coastlines the country has to offer.

Zip Lining Tour that also includes a tour of our butterfly garden and serpentarium

Our zip line canopy tour has 11 platforms, two repelling lines, and a Tarzan swing. The guided trip takes you in an air-conditioned van being accompanied by entertaining English speaking guides that will explain various types of plants and tropical vegetation as we make stops along the way. Then we arrive to our ranchero deep into the mountains. There you will be greeted with a fresh tropical drink as you are given a short safety demonstration preparing for your thrill seeking mission to sore like an Eagle through the rain forest canopy course.

Tour of our Botanical Gardens

Once boarding the boat from our beach we take you across the bay to Casa Orquídea, a beautifully landscaped private tropical garden with hundreds of species of ornamental and edible plants along with various species of birds, loaded with too many varieties of humming birds to count. After you enjoy our guided tour, there is time to take a swim on the beach and enjoy a picnic lunch.

Our Sunset Sailing Cruise

Again you will be picked up mid-afternoon from our beach to catch the best breeze coming off of the bay. You will enjoy a tasty meal prepared on board along with your favorite cocktail beverage. We stop along the way and drop anchor to swim and snorkel some coral reefs. Then capping it all off, you will catch a sunset at the mouth of the bay!

A Tour of the Wild Life Sanctuary

You will be taken by boat to the largest wild animal rehabilitation reserve where injured animals are brought in from all over the country. First when coming ashore you will be greeted by ‘Sweety”, a Spider monkey that was rescued and rehabilitated, and never left. This tour is a great opportunity to see up close and in person the many different varieties of wild animals that live in the forests and jungles of Costa Rica. You can see Macaws, monkeys, Ocelots, Spider, Howler, Squirrel, and Cappuccino monkeys, sloths, Anteaters, Agouti, Coatimundi, Ocelots, and even jaguars.

For you surfers, we are just a short drive away from some of the best surfing on the planet.

Kayaking and paddle boarding is also readily available to have some fun on the water at your own leisure.

There is also some excellent deep sea fishing in the area with a large variety of different types of fishing, depending on what you prefer. The marlin population is very plentiful in the area, so you can enjoy some of the best Marlin fishing on the planet. We also offer our own Deep Sea Marlin Sport Fishing Charter package.

Luxurious living in paradise with hospitality that makes you feel like royalty

  • 5 of 5

This was one of our best travel experiences by far. The property location is outstanding with well maintained pool, Gardens and easy walk to the beach. But the best part is the staff, who takes care of your every need. They can arrange transportation, activities as well as chef quality meals. For the activities arranged through the stuff you will be accompanied by the chef who will prepare sumptuous food that serves as lunch. And we cannot thank the housekeeper Vanessa enough, who served as our driver, Tour guide, translator, and whatever else she needed to be to take care of the need of the hour. There is maid service provided, which takes away the hassle of cleaning up and laundry. The staff will go out of their way to cater to your demands, such as getting fresh coconut water directly from the gardens. Apart from the service, the property itself is quite spacious, luxurious, secluded but very accessible from the town of Puerto Jimenez. One day we were able to see a big group of monkeys on the property. Also every day you wake up to the sound of birds. And at night if you venture out for a walk you will see the sky lit with stars like you have never seen before. And finally, we cannot thank the chef Stephen for his outstanding preparations, including local Costa Rican food, as well as special requests for vegetarian food, and mouth watering desserts every night. If you have a group of at least eight people and if this suits your budget you should blindly result of this property and let the staff and the location take care of the rest.

An Incredible Experience in the Costa Rica!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I are both chefs running very busy restaurants in Park City, UT, we very rarely get an opportunity to take a relaxing vacation. We won a week stay at The Whale Resort in Costa Rica through a charity auction. We had never been to Costa Rica so we were not sure what to expect. We invited our siblings since the house can easily accommodate up to 8 couples, it was a chance to spend time with family in an exotic location. From the moment we arrived everything was absolutely amazing. First impression of the house, it was immaculate and luxurious! The property far exceeded my expectations, from the pool to the beach to the chef's kitchen. Then we met the staff, the most warm, friendly and professional people you've ever had the pleasure of meeting! Vanessa arranged every adventure we wanted to experience from zip lining, to dolphin boat tours, an organic chocolate farm and making traditional tortillas from scratch. Each experience was planned for a bespoke vacation that everyone enjoyed!! We paid to have a private chef and let me tell you it is worth every penny! Steven is an exceptional chef, if in the United States he would have his own restaurant and tv show! Every meal was delicious, featuring local cuisine and international influences, this is a must if you are staying at The Whale Resort, no restaurant in the area will even come close, I promise! All in all we did not want to leave and I am still telling everyone who will listen this was the ultimate vacation, adventure, luxury and relaxing, who could ask for more?! Thank you to everyone who made our stay so special at The Whale Resort.

Best private resort!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had the best vacation ever in Costa Rica. If you want to get away, The Whale Resort Private Beachfront Eco Lodge is the place to stay. I would rather stay here than a Four Seasons Hotel. Vanessa, the concierge took good care of us and showed us around Puerto Jimenez including dolphin watching, touring the rain forest and her family-owned Cocoa Farm. We had amazing meals prepared by Chef Esteben. I highly recommend The Whale Resort!!!!

Best Place in Costa Rica!

  • 5 of 5

The Whale Resort was an absolutely wonderful place to stay! The staff went above and beyond to take care of us. We enjoyed the people as much as we did the amazing Osa. This was our family's 3rd trip to Costa Rica and was by far our favorite. Every detail was taken care. Everyone made us feel like royalty and family all at the same time!

Most Incredible Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

Our 12-year-old daughter was awarded a Make-a-Wish Foundation trip in late 2016, and spent the rest of the year trying to decide where to go. We were outwardly supportive of any choice she made, though we hoped to avoid the “busy spots” such as Disney or Harry Potter (London). With two younger children (one a busy four), we could only think that the typical resorts would be simultaneously enjoyable and very stressful.

Enter our daughter’s Spanish teacher, a native of Costa Rica. In class, this teacher apparently spent time telling the children stories of her country. Our daughter became enamored of the idea, so Make-a-Wish began searching for a place in Costa Rica.

At about this time, Mr. Michael Fox, owner of The Whale Resort, on the Osa Peninsula, Puerto Jiminez, Costa Rica, had convinced Make-a-Wish of Ohio, Kentucky, & Indiana to allow him to host a stay for a Make-a-Wish recipient. With the stars so aligned, we traveled to The Whale Resort on Saturday, April 1, 2017, returning on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Our children, all three, thoroughly enjoyed this place. They interacted with the caring and attentive staff (all three miss Vanessa terribly already!), loved the food prepared by the fantastic chef, and took in the activities arranged by the owner, including horse-back tours, zip-lining, monkey meetings, and surfing lessons.

But there is something more here, too, beyond the excellent service, food, and activities. This is not a “resort” in the same sense as a Beaches, Sandals, Disney, etc. This is immersion in a different culture, a different geography, a different place entirely. The lodge and surroundings are near the wild – there are monkey and macaws and night noises of who-knows-what. There are towns nearby which, while they cater to the tourists, are content to go about their business whether you are there or not. This experience serves to lift you out of your stressed and busy life, and set you down in bliss, pura vida, if you will let it.

If you want to do three thousand things and move around and exhaust yourself, I am sure you could find that here, and you definitely would at a Disney-style resort. However, if you truly aim for a place to escape, with your family, or even as a couple or by yourself…a beautiful, soulful, foreign escape…this is definitely the place for you.

We look forward to returning in the future!!

Vacation of a Lifetime!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Whale Resort in Feb 2017 and I’m not sure I can capture in words how truly special our experience was! Everything we read prior to departure mentioned how friendly the people of Costa Rica are so we assumed we would have some nice encounters along the way. Nothing could prepare us for how welcoming and friendly they truly are! This included everyone we came in contact with: restaurant staff, tour guides, shop owners and people on the streets were all simply delightful and very open. We have been to many countries and I can say that the people of Costa Rica truly made it surpass most, if not all, of the countries we have visited.

Of course, everyone on The Whale Resort team outshines the already high standard set by the other Ticos and Ticas we met along the way! General Manager, Vanessa, is simply amazing. She took care of every little detail, made excellent suggestions for tours and activities and created the most fun and relaxing environment we’ve ever had on vacation. Chef Steven’s meals were out of this world. Even 2 picky kids were eating mahi mahi and fruits and vegetables they had never heard of! I don’t think any of us left anything on our plates, but luckily we always left a “special pocket” for his amazing desserts! Eric was delightful and charming. He took special care to help the kids with snorkeling. Our 14 year old daughter even tried a fresh oyster that Eric dug out of the bottom while snorkeling with the kids. Bena and Chavo both take great pride in maintaining immaculate surroundings, both inside and out. Chavo even climbed up the palm tree and got us coconuts that we sampled on the beach. Needless to say, although we arrived as strangers, we quickly felt that were amongst family. Three of us were in tears hugging them all good bye!

The activities were endless. We zip lined, snorkeled, took surfing lessons, went fishing, took a tour of the chocolate farm, watched dolphins, went horse back riding on the beach, saw countless monkeys, sloths, toucans, scarlet mackaws and even a coati in the yard!

We simply can’t say enough about our experience with Mike Fox and the wonderful team he has put together at The Whale Resort. It’s an understatement to say that it was a vacation that we will never forget. We didn’t have to worry about a single thing. They took care of everything and we were able to simply relax, enjoy the magic of Costa Rica and spend time with family. It truly was special beyond belief!

Why Michael & Barb Fox chose Cantón Golfito

Words are hard to describe this property. It's a 3.5 acre beachfront property with three separate beachfront homes. It has the best of all worlds. We sit on the shore of one of the most beautiful beaches on the Osa Peninsula, but also sit in the middle of the most luscious tropical jungle, flooded with Heliconia, Birds Of Paradise, and delicate orchids. We have trails and pathways winding throughout, connecting all three houses on the property. We have 3 gated entrances. Once you go through gates you will be passing through to the other side, into a wonderland of Mother Natures tropical paradise!
