Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have just returned from an amazing week vacation at Casa Del Mar. The casita and the town of Manzanillo was perfect for my two kids (6yo and 4yo). The beach right across from the casita was perfect for my small kids to swim and snorkel. Because my kids do not love eating out, we cooked most meals in the casita. The kitchen was easy to use and well equipped.

Our first full day in Manzanillo, Amanda arranged a walk in the reserve with Tino. He was a great guide especially with my kids. My 4yo spent half the time in the ergo, but still really enjoyed the walk. My 6yo loved the walk. She took pictures of everything Tino pointed out, and loved his extensive, yet kid friendly, explanations of everything . I feel like she got an entire science class in a 4 hour walk.

One day we rented kayaks at the local dive shop and paddled into the creek. It was super easy and perfect for kids that did not want to walk. Floating along in the creek we were all able to enjoy the jungle (and lots of snacks:). It was nice we did this after our tour with Tino because we knew what to look for.

Another day Amanda arranged for us to go on a dolphin tour with Chun. We saw lots of dolphins and went swimming at Ponto Mono. It was fun to swim on such an isolated beach.

Driving tip: it took longer to drive from San Jose then google said it would. It took us 6 1/2 hours each way with all the necessary kids stops. The first half, the road is windy for and has lots of trucks. Definitely do not drive yourself at night.

Amanda was amazing our entire trip. She gave us great advice when planning the trip, she organized tours, welcomed (and entertained) my kids and made them feel at home, and gave us local knowledge of the area. Our plans change coming AND going from Casa Del Mar, Amanda accommodated us in both times.

I highly recommend the casitas at Casa Del Mar for families.

Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

I booked our stay at Casa del Mar because my kids wanted to stay next to a beach and the reviews were good....but I otherwise didn't have much in the way of expectations. So when we arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find an attractive, spacious, immaculately kept casita for our stay. Amanda has high standards and it shows - the casita was so clean and the garden so pretty. And it was heaven to be able to sit on the porch and gaze at the water. The beach is beautiful, the water warm and safe and the reef for snorkelling right there. Amanda is very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed talking with her and appreciated her recommendations. We liked that she was so available - it made us feel safe and cared for. We followed her recommendation to go on a jungle tour with Tino and it was one of the best things we did on our trip to Costa Rica. We also enjoyed the biggie-boarding/surfing beach nearby. Getting to the Caribe Sur takes a while but is totally worth it. And Casa del Mar is a wonderful place to stay. Thank you again Amanda for helping to make our trip so special.

Great location! Great host! Amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I had the most amazing spring break here. The weather was perfect in March. The photos of the casitas do not do it justice! They are very well kept and very nice! Everything you could need is in the kitchen for easy cooking. We went to two tours. One with a local jungle expert, Tino! He was so knowledgeable and entertaining! We then went on the Indiginious Tour and meet Costa Rican Indians, made chocolate from cocoa beans, ate a traditional tribe lunch and spent the afternoon in a beautiful waterfall! An 8 hour tour worth the payment! We rented bikes from the property and rode around to find monkeys and sloths amongst the trees in Manzanillo. It was truly an amazing site and sound! Our host, Amanda ensured our stay was more than memorable. From the time we booked our trip, to the time I made it home all the way to Texas, USA, Amanda ensured we were happy and safe. She went above and beyond to get us a private driver, ensured our stay was comfortable, suggested tours by our likings, gave us local tips, gave us a snorkeling tour of one of the best coral reefs in CR, she even ran home really quickly to grab some alcohol cleaner when my daughter cut her foot! She made a mom and her teenage daughter traveling alone feel very welcomed and cared for! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and will forever keep you in our memory of this vacation! #puravida BOOK CASA DEL MAR! You will not forget it!

Beach-front location, amazing host, perfect casita!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived we knew we'd love this place! The beach is beautiful, the casita well cared for and equipped, and the greatest host you could ask for! Amanda suggested every ocean activity you can think of, great places to eat, and Rainforest activities. We loved our park tour with Tino, comfortable bus ride to enjoy Puerto Viejo, bike rides to other beaches, meeting the friendly locals, and relaxing in hammocks! Food at markets or restaurants is readily available. Cooking is easy, thanks to a well-supplied kitchen and Amanda's garden produce she so readily shares!

We will definitely return!!

Best place to stay in Manzanillo

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at casa del mar for two weeks in November and we loved everything about the place. The house is beautiful and located right on the beach where we swam and went snorkeling. Amanda is a great host, she is helpful and very knowledgeable about the region. We were there during the hurricane warning and Amamnda made sure that we were safe and comfortable. We loved our walk in the nature preserve with Florentino. He showed us all kinds of fascinating animals and plants. We also really enjoyed walking on the beach from Manzanillo to Punta Uva every morning. This stretch of beach is beautiful, lined with palm trees, clean and deserted. It was a very relaxing holiday. Thanks Amanda for being the best host ever and for providing such great accommodation.

Truly Magnificant first time visit to Costa Rica thanks to Amanda at Casa Del Mar

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend Vince and I stayed at Casa Del Mar over Thanksgiving in 2016. Manzanillo is a beautiful village and we stayed at the best Casita hands down. The casita is even more beautiful then the pictures! From the adorable layout to the beautiful garden - we could not have asked for a better place to feel comfortable while truly soaking in the Caribbean Costa Rican Culture. The casita was clean, not too small not too big, right off of the black sand beach with so many activities right outside our porch. This was the first vacation I had taken utilizing VRBO and Amanda set the bar extremely high! She helped us with anything you could think of, which we greatly appreciated given this was our first time to Costa Rica. We arrived extremely late in the evening and Amanda stayed and greeted us with a warm welcome. From that point on, I felt a level of comfort that I didn't think I could experience so early in a foreign land. She gave us tips on where to eat, shop and go on adventures. She also facilitated a Private Hike of which I could tell stories for a lifetime from. Tino was the professional guide that Amanda knew and he spoiled us with a true Jungle Adventure. Then Amanda also facilitated a zip lining adventure through a wonderful organization. Both experiences were unforgettable! Thank you AMANDA! We were also surrounded by so many natural resources through Amanda's garden - which was a gift in itself. I hope to visit this beautiful piece of heaven on earth and see Amanda again - she is truly a wonderful person that Vince and I were honored to meet. Thank you for a TRIP OF A LIFETIME!

Manzanillo is such a beautiful area. You have great snorkeling in front of Casa Del Mar, hiking in Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, Sea Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, bird watching, dolphin tours, bike riding, horse back riding beach and jungle, animal rescue centers, beach bumming, surfing is not far from other towns for day visits in indigenous communities, waterfalls and national parks.

The town is a small fishing village of 320 people and does not attract the tourist hype of Puerto Viejo 12.5km away although is a popular spot for Costa Ricans on weekends, school holidays, Christmas, new year and Semana Santa. It is a real afrocaribe village. it is a 3 street town at the end of the road on the south Caribbean. Manzanillo has also been named the best beach in Costa Rica both by Lonely Planet and International Living. You can also access all beaches between Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo with a day trip on bikes.
