Long Ridge Retreat
This property – 40 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains – is for those looking to retreat in the quiet just under hour away from San Jose, Silicon Valley, the ocean, and only 20-30 min more to get to San Francisco or Berkeley.
Easy access to miles and miles of hiking trails – the property is near open space and state parks. You can even hike to the ocean if you're ambitious! Perfect for families and friends who want to spend some time together hanging out, but have the option.
The house was completed in 1990 – a timber framed structure that is both intimate and expansive. There are 2000 sq. feet of veranda to sit on and watch the wildlife. A master bedroom (sleeps two), a loft (sleeps three ). See below for adding guests who can use a queen sofa bed in a separate study.
The kitchen is a great place to gather while cooking. It’s filled with cookware, bakeware and all manner of cooking tools – there is a person who likes to cook who lives here part of the time. The living room and dining room are spacious (there is a 10 foot dining table). There’s a fireplace for days when the Pacific storms come pounding in in the winter or just if it's a bit cool and you want a Sunday afternoon to read, watch the deer and maybe have a nap.
We're off the grid. Well water (bring your own drinking water). The three-mile drive in from Skyline Boulevard is best done the first time in daylight :)
Where else can you stay in the wild, yet have a day in one of the world’s greatest cities?

Susan Stucky purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1990
Why Susan Stucky chose La Honda
At the time my former partner and I acquired this property we felt we could choose either San Francisco or out here. Where else can you easily get to San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Santa Cruz, the beach but be in the wilderness. The new part-owner, says of his investment, "I bought my last house first."
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Off the grid, quiet, only the lights of a few houses at night, a creek, virgin redwoods, long views (Butano Ridge and Portola State Park from the front porch, views of Peters Creek watershed up to Alpine Road from the back porch.

Glamorous Home in the Woods - Off The Grid
WOW! This place is breathtaking...or maybe it is better described as a place where you can catch your breathe from the busyness of life. You are in the middle of the forest, yet it is only a 1-hour drive from the East Bay (no traffic). Once there, it doesn't take long for the nature to recharge your batteries.
The wifi is fast. There is plenty of parking.
Don't let the 1-bedroom description fool you, the 2800 square foot property allows ample privacy for 3 couples. There is a separate studio connected by a 50 foot long, covered bridge over the hillside. People in our party argued there case of why they should get to sleep in the private study.
Old growth oak trees surround the main house, with an abundance of full wall-height windows to view each of them. The main house has a full kitchen that is spacious with updated appliances, and enough cookware to prepare thanksgiving sized meals for eight people. The gas grill is top of the line and produced perfect tri-tip. The dining room has a gorgeous chandelier above a solid wood table which easily seats 8 people.
There are two full bathrooms in the main house, upstairs. The slate tile shower near the loft will give you life and gets real hot! This bathroom has full first aid. We found everything we needed to dress our dog's injured dew claw. The half bath just outside the main house is the only room here that feels like a rustic cabin in the woods.
The porch was our favorite spot. It has 3 rocking chairs and a recliner. You would always find someone from our party out there enjoying the view of miles of mountains and valleys, covered in redwoods.
The architecture of the home is something to marvel. A fusion of a Vermont style cabin home with Japanese structural joinery, we literally could not stop talking about it. The house is very clean and well organized. There are no shoes allowed inside.
If you forget to bring your book, it is not to worry. The owners have an awesome book collection built into the walls and counters of the home. The books compliment the architecture. The books are well taken care of and well organized. Quite the forest library!
The house is uncluttered, yet there is a diversity of strategically placed, cultural artifacts and thoughtful artwork throughout. Quite the forest Museum!
When we return, we will rent for at least 3 nights to allow enough time to explore the surrounding hikes.
The owners are very friendly off-the-grid pioneers, they will give you your space.
Zachary and his family and friends were the perfect house guests (ok, I am biased given their gracious review). But it is still true. Obviously thoughtful people they took great care of the place and their enjoyment made it all the more pleasant to host them.
Let them stay at your place for sure. All tied up at the end with a bow and a smile.
