Stop and Enjoy the Monadhliath Mountains
Just on the edge of the Monadhliath mountains, this is a great spot in the Highlands, well connected to visit the Cairngornms National Park, the quiet Eastern shore of Loch Ness, the Nairn and Findhorn valleys, Inverness and Culloden or the beaches along the coast. Also you can travel further West or North to visit other places. The owners of the cottage mentioned the attractive grounds, with a pond and woodland leading down to the river where I was delighted to find a small island surrounded by beautiful hidden waterfalls. Another thing that was special, was the area immediatley around the cottage, with varied woodland in the valley as well as the forestry, craggy rock faces, accessible little hills, moorland, reedbeds and lots of attractive lochs all in easy walking distance. These places provided a wonderful habitat for wildlife. There were roe deer all around the valley, often coming really close to the cottage, plenty of rabbits and hares, red deer higher in the hills. I saw otter tracks in a couple of places nearby but missed seeing the otters themselves. We were surrounded by a variety of interesting birds which we saw everywhere we went, not only at the RSPB reserve at Loch Ruthven, close to the house. When you go, check the OS map to find a great network of local footpaths so you can get up close to the wildlife and don't forget a pair of binoculars! More popular local spots were the lovely beach a Dores for a picnic with friends and the spectacualr Falls of Foyers a short drive away.
Don't underestimate the local facilities. The nearby shop at Inverarnie was well stocked, with lots of unexpected necessities hidden away and, for a wider variety of fresh meat and veg. it was only a short hop to Inverness. We had a great meal, near the cottage, at the Steadings where our host was most attentive.
The cottage itself was clean and well equipped and Rod and Jayne gave us a great welcome.
Stop and enjoy the Monadhliath Mountains - the A9 may be a good road but don't just drive on past!
So glad to hear you enjoyed your stay.....hope to see you again one day!
