Dexter Sams is a General Contractor in Pilot Mountain, NC who specializes in period renovation as he has restored a number of 19th century log and classic homes in the Foothills area over the last 25 years. He also does new construction.
Dexter Sams purchased this cabin in 2014
This log home is the result of reinventing the role of the local builder to make the most of the natural materials at hand by manually felling each tree and milling the logs for building materials on site. Coupled with the desire to preserve tobacco farming memorabilia, this first of several cabins displays the original logs from historic 1880 circa barns.
This space was created with an appreciation for natural scenery, simple quiet and to support human need to decompress and reconnect with the great outdoors within a short ride from the Triad and Southwest Virginia.
What a wonderful way to spend our Thanksgiving... We had planned to stay at this cabin for two nights but decided to stay another night because we just simply didn't want to leave. Dexter Sams, the owner, stopped by shortly after we arrived. What a great guy. Seemed like we had known him all our lives. Sam had already set everything up for a fire. All we had to do was to light the match. He has several stacks of firewood at the property so there's plenty to burn. And there isn't a charge for it... The cabin is beautiful with a nice front porch and a deck on the side with beautiful views. We could actually see the sun coming up over the mountains each morning through the huge windows . The stars were so beautiful at night. We could not believe how quiet it was at the cabin and the views in all directions were beautiful. The folks living in Pilot Mountain are so friendly... Never met a stranger. We loved dining at Mountain View restaurant. The owner, Kathy Mueller and her son Donald (the chef) were so friendly and the food was fantastic. We spent a good part of a day at the "knob" on Pilot Mountain. Beautiful breathtaking views in all directions. We also visited Hanging Rock State Park. Another beautiful place. There is a 70 mile corridor that runs from Hanging Rock to Pilot Mountain State Park. We plan to do more hiking and maybe rent horses to ride the 70 mile corridor when we go back. Another neat place is Pilot Mtn main street. A lot of neat shops and friendly people. We will definitely be returning to Pilot Mountain and "the cabin" in the spring. Thank you Dexter for being so friendly and helpful. Thank you Kathy and Donald at Mountain View Restaurant and all the friendly folks we met in Pilot Mountain...
We loved everything about the cabin and its surroundings! Loved how we were close to everything, yet away from it all. It was peaceful, relaxing, and enjoyable. We can hardly wait to visit again! ~The Simpsons
Very well maintained cabin! Mr Dexter was very friendly and had everything ready for us even though we arrived hour early (that change of DST always gets us). We WILL return and hope to make it a semi annual event. Sam can we get repeat renter discounts? LOL.
We just got back from a wonderful weekend at this cabin. It was perfect for our family of three and two dogs. The cabin was clean, had basic kitchen items like soap and paper towels, had lots of natural light from the big windows, and it is obvious that the owner really cares for this place. For dinner Saturday night we even enjoyed grilling steaks on the new gas grill and made salads with the fresh vegetables that the owner has grown off the patio for his guests. We particularly enjoyed the views from the cabin and taking long walks with our dogs around his land and two ponds. We did leave the cabin to see Mt. Airy and hike at Hanging Rock, but I feel we would have been just as happy staying the entire weekend "unplugged" on his farm. The only thing I would change would be to have a better quality mattress. But other than that, we can't wait to stay again and enjoy this property! We truly felt at home here!
We had a great experience while staying at Mr. Sams cabin. Two state parks are just miles away and both are visible form the property (Pilot Mt. & Hanging Rock). We really enjoyed sitting on the porch swing and looking out at the mountain view. Also saw some wild turkeys and deer in the evenings. Mr. Sams was a great host. Very pleasant, hard working, down to earth good ol' boy (much like most of us North Carolinians). Very accommodating and generous. We would & will recommend this cabin to our family and friends. Thanks for great experience Dexter!
We had a wonderful stay in a beautiful area in Pilot Mountain. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed for our weekend visit. There were even cherry tomatoes and basil in the garden to use in our appetizer I made the first evening. What a bonus!
Dexter was a great host and told us all about the area and building the cabin. We had one small problem and he came immediately to fix it.
We will be staying here again.
