About Dexter Sams

Dexter Sams is a General Contractor in Pilot Mountain, NC who specializes in period renovation as he has restored a number of 19th century log and classic homes in the Foothills area over the last 25 years. He also does new construction.

Dexter Sams purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Dexter Sams chose Blue Ridge Mountains

This log home is the result of reinventing the role of the local builder to make the most of the natural materials at hand by manually felling each tree and milling the logs for building materials on site. Coupled with the desire to preserve tobacco farming memorabilia, this first of several cabins displays the original logs from historic 1880 circa barns.

What makes this cabin unique

This space was created with an appreciation for natural scenery, simple quiet and to support human need to decompress and reconnect with the great outdoors within a short ride from the Triad and Southwest Virginia.

Quiet, Peaceful, and Private

  • 5 of 5

We were welcomed warmly by Dexter with a kind smile and farm fresh veggies and berries in hand. Dexter gave us an overview of the layout of the land and the amenities offered. We spent our days relaxing in the tranquil cabin and listening to records while cooking in the very spacious kitchen. Our evenings were filled with leisurely walks with the dogs on the spacious land, discovering all the new plants and cabins with their own distinct character. The cabin by the closest pond has homemade fishing poles ready to use. At dusk you can hear a chorus of frogs and insects. We also ran into some wild turkeys and small reptiles. David, Dexter's brother found us on one of these walks and greeted us and our pups with the same warm welcome; he even gave us an insight for the future of the farm and his goals. The cabin has it's own veggie and herb gardens which we were welcome to use during our stay. We went to a little downtown area about 5 minutes from the cabin which had a great artisan made shop filled with upcycled items, homemade soaps, and handmade dolls. One day we made a trip to Mount Airy and got to be tourists in a small town, going to the Andy Griffith Museum and walking down the main street to check out the antiques. In that town, we found one of the poshest dog hotels we ever laid eyes one (also the only one we ever did). It was amusing and fun. On the night of the 4th, the mountain view was filled with fireworks from homes around town. Others have said it, but this is the perfect cabin to unplug and unwind. Dexter puts so much thought into the cabins and land, reusing resources from the past and from the land. The charm and care comes through very clear. We started planning our trip back on the ride home to the city.

Serenity Now couldn't be a more fitting name!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Serenity Now. We found the cabin to be clean and have everything on hand needed to get our vaca off to a smooth start. The property the cabin is on is incredibly beautiful, views of the Sauratown Mountains from the front porch, fresh fruits and vegetables growing in several different locations on property all made available to guests for the picking and enjoyment, and enjoy we did. Hiking at 2 state parks just a few minutes away, wineries for touring and tastings as well as local eateries close by. My husband and I both love to eat and found a restaurant in downtown Winston Salem that had several exotic choices you don't normally find on menu's locally, so we made the very easy 30 minute drive to downtown Winston, no problem finding parking and had a fabulous dinner at which I ordered the Australian Kangaroo and it was yummy delicious! So while you are tucked away and secluded at Serenity Now you also have many choices of all sorts well within reach. Dexter, who owns the cabin couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. It was just a fabulous experience all the way around. We are already looking forward to our next visit!!

Beautiful, serene vacation

  • 5 of 5

The log cabin in Pilot Mountain is a perfect place for a peaceful, relaxing vacation. The outdoor space is gorgeous and the cabin is a rustic beauty, with the added bonus of having all the luxuries of home. The place is much bigger than it appears in pictures, with a spacious open feel and gorgeous kitchen. The owner stopped by with fresh veggies from his garden, and is sincerely interested in making your stay a great one. The fireplace at night is cozy, and for the day time, there are chairs and even a porch swing to read on! The area is very pretty, with plenty to do and groceries and other necessities just 10 minutes away. But, you'll be so happy at the cabin, you may not want to leave. I highly recommend this property rental.

Cozy and Serene, a peaceful home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We do a cabin trip to different areas at least once a year. This is our best experience yet. The owner Dexter was a great host. Our dog loved the massive open land as she chased butterflies through the tall grass fields, and we loved the amazing views of the Mountains from both the living room and the bedroom. My wife loved the swing on the deck facing the mountains, and I loved using my binoculars to see the wild turkey, and deer from the deck. If you are stuck on technology then this place is not for you. I wanted away from Internet and TV. Perfect place where you can reconnect with your other half and focus on reality not virtual reality. We would not hesitate to come back. Maybe next time with family members since the owner has 2 awesome cabins like this. Thank you Dexter! It was worth every penny spent.

Pilot Mountain Thanksgiving 2016

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful way to spend our Thanksgiving... We had planned to stay at this cabin for two nights but decided to stay another night because we just simply didn't want to leave. Dexter Sams, the owner, stopped by shortly after we arrived. What a great guy. Seemed like we had known him all our lives. Sam had already set everything up for a fire. All we had to do was to light the match. He has several stacks of firewood at the property so there's plenty to burn. And there isn't a charge for it... The cabin is beautiful with a nice front porch and a deck on the side with beautiful views. We could actually see the sun coming up over the mountains each morning through the huge windows . The stars were so beautiful at night. We could not believe how quiet it was at the cabin and the views in all directions were beautiful. The folks living in Pilot Mountain are so friendly... Never met a stranger. We loved dining at Mountain View restaurant. The owner, Kathy Mueller and her son Donald (the chef) were so friendly and the food was fantastic. We spent a good part of a day at the "knob" on Pilot Mountain. Beautiful breathtaking views in all directions. We also visited Hanging Rock State Park. Another beautiful place. There is a 70 mile corridor that runs from Hanging Rock to Pilot Mountain State Park. We plan to do more hiking and maybe rent horses to ride the 70 mile corridor when we go back. Another neat place is Pilot Mtn main street. A lot of neat shops and friendly people. We will definitely be returning to Pilot Mountain and "the cabin" in the spring. Thank you Dexter for being so friendly and helpful. Thank you Kathy and Donald at Mountain View Restaurant and all the friendly folks we met in Pilot Mountain...
