This beloved and cherished property is situated next to a small creek that flows year round. A recognized garden designer and builder has embellished this oasis with a multitude of stone paths and benches throughout the property that give each space a different feeling and use. About Keith A. Stover

I am a garden designer since childhood and now continue my passions professionally. I little eccentric and off the beaten path, I get along with most people and belief we are all here to help each other and along the way be having a great time.

Keith A. Stover purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Keith A. Stover chose Oakland

This was a unique and speacial peice of property before I purchased it. But since then a lot of love and care has gone into this property and most people would agree. From the cozy little cottage with lots of unique little features to the huge garden. There are dozens of little places to hang out in and just enjoy the surrounding. I think the property which has been well cared for radiates a lot of healing energy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Keith's cottage was the perfect getaway I needed as I was attending a retreat in the area. The grounds were beautiful and very relaxing and you can tell Keith puts a lot of pride in that. The cottage was surprisingly more spacious than I had expected. Keith was very respectful of my time and contacted me in advance if he had a question and he responded promptly to my needs. The location is very close to major highways but felt off the beaten track. And, I especially enjoyed his dog Guinness who at first glance is a large dog but was so sweet and friendly.

Keith is laid back and really friendly. He made us feel very welcome. Keith is a great host who will not hover yet if you have a question about anything he will text and respond timely. The cottage is set up so nicely and we loved the bedding. We slept so well here. We stayed for 4 nights. We are a family with kids and the kids really enjoyed picking some of the tomatoes, basil and plums that were so tasty! Each day we would travel into the city over the Bay bridge to visit the Exploratorium, CA Sciences Academy etc. we figured out that their is a Bart station close to the cottage and that was a much better way to get to the city and mainly home again after a full day as this avoided the high traffic leaving the city and going over the bridge. So worth it! Being able to come home to this peaceful place was splendid. Highly recommend.

Christmas Cottage

What a beautiful cottage! Soo comfy. Nestled in the treess with a creek nearby and a huge and beautiful buckeye tree in front. The cottage was perfect for 3 adults. The kitchen was very spacious and fully loaded with all utensils. Nice size TV in living room. Keith the owner was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed. Location of this VRBO is excellent very close to Lake Merritt, Emeryville, Grand Avenue etc. Will most definitely rent this VRBO again.

Amazing stay - idyllic surroundings in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This is by far the best vacation rental experience we've had. The cottage is the perfect size and the garden around it is breathtaking. Every detail of the cottage seemed designed to maximize our comfort...from the amazing beds with soft pillows to the giant bath towels. And there was a washer and dryer in the cottage: perfect for staying with kids. I will definitely stay here the next time we come to the Bay Area.

A great little oasis

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best vacation rentals my family has ever stayed in. This was our first trip to the San Francisco/Oakland area, and we would definitely rent here again.

The house was extremely clean, bright, full of fresh flowers, lots of little touches to make you comfortable. There are little things like spices in the kitchen, toiletries in the bathroom, and way too many other small things to mention, that make this a terrific vacation house.

Most places in the Bay area do not have air conditioning, but that wasn't a problem at this house. We stayed during two extraordinarily hot day, and it wasn't a problem. The house stays shaded for a good part of the day, there are tons of windows, and fans in the laundry closet. Then the temperature dropped down to normal by the end of our trip, so we tried the gas fireplace - worked great!

And then there's the garden. Tons of flowers, a vegetable garden, herb garden, fruit trees - hummingbirds. The owner, Keith, has a list of things that are ready to be harvested, which we thought was a really fun touch. After a rough day of city traffic, tourist crowds, and noise, this was a wonderful little oasis, where we could leave the stress behind and relax in the evening. The owner was very attentive but unobtrusive - if we had any questions, he was available. We had a great stay, and would definitely rent here again.

BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE

  • 1 of 5

For this listing, VRBO should be changed to “VBRO—Visitor Beware of Rental”. We rented this unit at the end of July, 2016 for 8 days. The gardens were readily available & we took advantage of the harvest on several occasions cooking meals with our son & daughter-in-law, who live nearby. We approached the owner about his “No pet” policy & got permission for our son to bring his dog in the evening. The owner cautiously consented as long as the dog was outside on the deck, was never to be in the cottage, & arrived after 7:30 PM. This was reasonable & we thanked him for his flexibility. On two occasions for a maximum of 3 hrs each, the dog was brought along. The dog was tied to the railing with a short leash that did not allow access to the cottage, but allowed him to lie down on the deck & his bed that was brought along.

All of this leads up to the fact that 3 weeks after our return, the owner notified us that he was keeping our damage deposit. He claims the cleaners found small amounts of “cat or dog hair” in the cottage “embedded” in a section of the dining area carpet and” in the bathroom” and was vacuumed up the day we left . No pictures or tests were provided regarding evidence of pet hair. He said he was going to have to have the cottage completely sanitized & cleaned at a substantial cost, but has provided no copies of bills or statements. The owner was in the cottage the day we left & thanked us via text message for a “Thank You” note we left. Positive text interchanges took place when we returned home a week later. No mention of the pet hair during those exchanges.

We wrote a detailed response to allegations. The sliding door is a well used traffic area for access outside. There are many ways debris can be tracked/blown into the house. Not all openings have screens. His response mostly dwelled on a previous renter with caged cats indoors that caused allergen & hair issues requiring extensive cleaning & sanitizing. Is this cost being carried forward to other renters?

Undoubtedly, the owner will respond to this review with his claims of our violating the verbal agreement and having to clean & sanitize. This has turned into a “He said, she said,” stand off and left a trust and customer service issue with the owner and VRBO. He charges the damage deposit along with rental payment going directly into his account instead of breaking it up into rental and damage deposit. Insist that the damage deposit be charged separately

Owner's Response: I try to be as good as host as I can be, mostly enjoy it, and make an effort with all of my guests that stay on my property so their visit will be as enjoyable as possible which is how I treated Scott and his wife Diana during their stay. I think they really enjoyed their stay as they booked an extra day at the end of 7 day reservation making it a total of 8 days. Diana left me the following text about 5 days after they had left: “Keith, It’s Diana again. We just got home after stopping in Bryce Canyon and are gorging on your garden’s amazing cucumbers! Thank you sooooo much for letting us raid your garden before we left. Our tummies thank you too. We will review your place and ask for an extra star for you. 5 is way too few for you and the Garden Paradise!!!” Scott’s response to my email that told them I would be keeping their damage deposit and asked them why they had let their son’s dog inside the cottage: “First, I think you know how much we enjoyed staying in your cottage. It is a beautiful and unique property. We have stayed in VRBO properties across the US and in other countries over the years and you have one right up there at the top. The gardens and landscaping are wonderfully matched with an exceptionally well appointed and equipped interior. The convenience to amenities and attractions was greatly appreciated as was your attention to our needs. In the description, you state, “…the property is a haven for the gourmet cook. “ How right you are!” It doesn’t exactly line up with their title BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE. I don’t take the security deposit either, VRBO does and always has, it’s just easier that way. In the end their Trust and Security Department allowed me to keep the Damage deposit after conducting their own investigation, which by no means favors the homeowner. We have no issues.

This is a small cottage and a relatively quite residential neighborhood. I expect all my guest to be respectful of my neighbors and myself by keeping noise levels to a minimum. That means no loud talking while outside on the deck, absolutely no music outside or loud music with the cottage windows and doors open. Basically enjoy yourself but not at the expense of me or my neighbors. This is not a party house. Any guests that do not abide by this rules will be asked to leave.

Please remove shoes upon entering the cottage.

Thank you
