Elegantly-Rustic Vacation Accommodations
If you are looking for a vacation rental that feels like a vacation retreat and not like the house down the block, this is it! We’re not like the vast majority of houses listed on VRBO because we built our guest house as a retreat, as a place to get away, as an experience of serenity and beauty. We are located out in the countryside between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, not far from Aspen, on a European-country style ranch. The rental is for our private guest house, located next to the main house, where we live.
Back in 2001 when we first opened, we were a bed-and-breakfast designed for the adventure-seeking and beauty-loving traveler (not tourist). We had been living in Manhattan prior to moving here and spent many weekends venturing out of the city to find a place that felt like a discovery, something authentic and beautiful.
When we bought our property in rural Colorado in 1998, it was out in the middle of nowhere—not in a town, not in a subdivision—but truly out in the country on a country road. We built a house and guest house and barn that we made up as we went along—from pictures of the Italian countryside and French-country architecture, from memories of our fondest childhood places, from dreams and sketches. The country road has since been paved, and our dream has evolved into a small working ranch that we live on. Silos and hay fields in the backyard, horses and geese and chickens in the front.
We don’t quite fit into the new VRBO model of renting someone’s family home or second home. Our guest house is not supposed to feel like the neighbor’s house down the street with all the latest appliances and the biggest flat-screen TV. (There is nothing at all wrong with that, it’s just not what our space is about.)
People have been staying in our guest house for almost twenty years, and the people who love it (and come back again and again) say that it’s the beauty and peacefulness and sense of being unplugged that they love, together with the most amazing outside space they’ve ever experienced.
We're not totally disconnected from modern living--we have free WiFi, there is a small TV connected to DISH upstairs, and the kitchen is fully functional (stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker)—but we still insist that the big farmers’ table is better suited for sitting around and playing cards or board games than spending large amounts of time cooking in it. Summer cooking is much more fun on the grill down by the pond-side cabin (set up with dishes and a sink). Renting our guest house is more like experiencing an upscale summer camp than staying in a regular house in a subdivision. We’re a bit off the beaten path, but you can get to town within 15 minutes (either Glenwood Springs or Carbondale). You will walk out the front door on a crisp summer morning and truly be out in nature, not passing a bunch of nice suburban houses on your morning walk.
We LOVE sharing our dream with people who are yearning for a bit of impractical beauty and a glimpse into a different kind of time and space. Please feel free to send an email with any questions you have!
It's a great atmosphere for a family or friend get-together. The views of Mt. Sopris (especially early morning) are unparalleled. From many years of experience and what makes for the most comfortable guest experience, please note: the maximum number of adults is 8, and while there are additional beds in most bedrooms to accommodate children, the MAXIMUM CAPACITY of adults + children is 12, with 10 recommended. Please inquire if you have questions about this.

The grounds are great
We stayed for 1 week with a party of 12 for a family reunion. Ages ran from 10 to 70. Let me start out with the positives.
The swimming pond, cook cabin, fire pit & surrounding grounds are great.
The big kitchen table & side table worked well for meals & games
The house architecture is interesting.
The location worked well about halfway between Glenwood Springs & Carbondale
Gretchen & her family are friendly & helpful
We did have a few issues with the house providing for 12 people.
There is no living room. There is a very small area on the upstairs landing with a love seat & 1 chair. Everyone hung out in the kitchen which was not the the best way to get comfortable & relax especially when preparing meals.
Our 2nd problem was sleeping arrangements. Although there are beds for 12, there were 3 couples that wanted a room to themselves. That left 6 people for the 4th bedroom. We ended up with 1 couple getting a hotel room in town. The remaining 10 were comfortable. I think the house is best for 10 people or less.
In summary if you don't need a living room & the sleeping arrangements work for your size group I highly recommend this property.
Couldn't agree more about the group size limitations! We ran a traditional B&B for years before converting over to VRBO and that's why the guest house is set up as it is - not as a "normal" house for rent (like VRBO usually features) but for maximum privacy for the individual couples/families within the four bedrooms. From the host perspective, VRBO has taken a while to get used to - all of the information (including bed configuration, etc.) had been input onto the site, but you kind of have to look for it (that's the way the site is set up). We do have bed space for 12, but you need to see how the beds are configured to figure out if it will work for your group.
That said, I have amended the maximum size to 10 (with no more than 8 adults) to help address this issue.
Most of our guests have enjoyed using the large country kitchen (with upholstered chairs) as the gathering place, I guess because the kitchen wasn't used often to cook full meals, though it's definitely possible to do so. Again, depends on what your expected use of the kitchen would be.
Best vacation in Colorado
Very spacious bedrooms with comfortable beds. Beautiful view on the Rocky Mountains.
Very friendly people.
Beautiful European Country Retreat!
Gretchen was a marvelous host! We really enjoyed our stay!
The kids loved the pond and paddleboat, and spent hours playing in the little cabin.
The location was convenient to the Glenwood springs attractions and a short trip to Aspen to see the Maroon Bells.
We enjoyed the sunset view from Lookout mountain, and the access road to the top was just 1 1/2 miles down the road. We saw a black bear cross the road on the way up to the tower!
There was plenty of room to spread out in the house. We had several deer visit us every morning for breakfast including a fawn.
We would recommend staying here without reservation!
We had a great time at this property. Everything was as described, quiet, clean and well maintained. Gretchen provided top notch service and accommodated every request. Property has awesome views and we saw plenty of wildlife. Cannot say enough nice things.
There is an amazing amount of outdoor, adventurous things to do, all within a half hour drive from here, including rafting, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, paragliding, climbing, swimming and more. If you enjoy a quieter kind of outdoor experience, you can stay on the property and hang out at our pond (use the paddle boat, swim if you like), or take a walk out in the countryside.
