If you are looking for a vacation rental that feels like a vacation retreat and not like the house down the block, this is it! We’re not like the vast majority of houses listed on VRBO because we built our guest house as a retreat, as a place to get away, as an experience of serenity and beauty. We are located out in the countryside between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, not far from Aspen, on a European-country style ranch. The rental is for our private guest house, located next to the main house, where we live.
Back in 2001 when we first opened, we were a bed-and-breakfast designed for the adventure-seeking and beauty-loving traveler (not tourist). We had been living in Manhattan prior to moving here and spent many weekends venturing out of the city to find a place that felt like a discovery, something authentic and beautiful.
When we bought our property in rural Colorado in 1998, it was out in the middle of nowhere—not in a town, not in a subdivision—but truly out in the country on a country road. We built a house and guest house and barn that we made up as we went along—from pictures of the Italian countryside and French-country architecture, from memories of our fondest childhood places, from dreams and sketches. The country road has since been paved, and our dream has evolved into a small working ranch that we live on. Silos and hay fields in the backyard, horses and geese and chickens in the front.
We don’t quite fit into the new VRBO model of renting someone’s family home or second home. Our guest house is not supposed to feel like the neighbor’s house down the street with all the latest appliances and the biggest flat-screen TV. (There is nothing at all wrong with that, it’s just not what our space is about.)
People have been staying in our guest house for almost twenty years, and the people who love it (and come back again and again) say that it’s the beauty and peacefulness and sense of being unplugged that they love, together with the most amazing outside space they’ve ever experienced.
We're not totally disconnected from modern living--we have free WiFi, there is a small TV connected to DISH upstairs, and the kitchen is fully functional (stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker)—but we still insist that the big farmers’ table is better suited for sitting around and playing cards or board games than spending large amounts of time cooking in it. Summer cooking is much more fun on the grill down by the pond-side cabin (set up with dishes and a sink). Renting our guest house is more like experiencing an upscale summer camp than staying in a regular house in a subdivision. We’re a bit off the beaten path, but you can get to town within 15 minutes (either Glenwood Springs or Carbondale). You will walk out the front door on a crisp summer morning and truly be out in nature, not passing a bunch of nice suburban houses on your morning walk.
We LOVE sharing our dream with people who are yearning for a bit of impractical beauty and a glimpse into a different kind of time and space. Please feel free to send an email with any questions you have!
It's a great atmosphere for a family or friend get-together. The views of Mt. Sopris (especially early morning) are unparalleled. From many years of experience and what makes for the most comfortable guest experience, please note: the maximum number of adults is 8, and while there are additional beds in most bedrooms to accommodate children, the MAXIMUM CAPACITY of adults + children is 12, with 10 recommended. Please inquire if you have questions about this.
