Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed a week at Casa Bamboo while my husband taught a painting workshop. The house was beautiful, comfortable, immaculate and perfectly located. Close to the jardin but on a quiet street (and a block away from a lovely morning yoga class!). The manager met us, showed us around, and helped out during the week when we had questions. The housekeeper Isabella was lovely. We had a wonderful stay; Lydia seems to have thought of everything. Even the driver she recommended, Victor Gonzales, was wonderful. I highly recommend this lovely spot and would happily stay there again.

Absolutely Wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here over the Christmas holidays, which are magical in San Miguel. The house itself added so much to our enjoyment. Beautifully appointed, well laid out for individual privacy and comfort. The architecture is stunning - restrained and complex at the same time. The location could not have been better. We found hidden neighborhoods all around and were a few short blocks to the Jardin. Our host was delightful, helpful and responsive, adding another dimension of well-being to our stay. Our housekeeper was also a delight. We highly recommend this home.

Superb San Miguel base

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with this gracious, contemporary, immaculate home with its wonderfully well equipped kitchen and enjoyable roof-top patio. The numerous architectural touches, such as the interior garden/light well, enhanced our enjoyment, as did the fact that the casa is away from the crowds around the Jardin, but convenient to it and to most of the interesting sites in San Miguel. Adding to the quality of our experience, the staff, especialy Isabel and Erika, were efficient, gracious and most welcoming. Thank you. We recommend this property very highly.

So comfortable and nice!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Casa Bamboo recently and I was so pleasantly surprised. The house is beautifully designed with everything you need, from the heaters to the comfortable couches, well stocked kitchen (pots/pans/coffee maker), etc. It really felt like home for a week. It was so close to everything in San Miguel. There is even a store across from the house in case you want a papaya/guayaba for breakfast. We made breakfast every day at the house and ate out for lunch/dinner.

After a long day of walking on the cobblestone streets, the house and its warmth was really inviting. I took a bath each night in a deep soaking tub to help with my aches/pains. I wish my home in CA had all the character that this house has.

The beds were super comfortable with down coverlets. Oh, so perfect. The flowers on the table were very much appreciated.

Lydia, Neil, and Isabel were an awesome group. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Car: not necessary

288km (179 miles) NW of Mexico City; 120km (74 miles) E of Guanajuato; 64km (40 miles) NW of Querétaro

San Miguel de Allende (elevation 1,862m/6,107 ft.) mixes the best aspects of small-town life with the cosmopolitan pleasures of a big city. It is the smallest of the cities covered from this region and perhaps the most relaxed; a wide variety of restaurants, shops, and galleries makes urbanites feel quite at home. Most of the buildings in the central part of the town date from the Colonial Era or the 19th century; the law requires newer buildings to conform to existing architecture, and the town has gone to some lengths to retain its cobblestone streets.

Living in San Miguel is a large community of Americans: some retired, some attending art or language school, and some who have come here to live simply and follow their creative muses -- painting, writing, and sculpting. The center of this community is the public library in the former convent of Santa Ana. It is a good place to find information on San Miguel or just to sit on the patio and read.

A notable aspect of San Migueleña society is the number of festivals it celebrates. In a country that needs only the barest of excuses to hold a fiesta, San Miguel is known far and wide for them. Most of these celebrations are of a religious character and are meant to combine social activity with religious expression. People practice Catholicism with great fervor -- going on religious pilgrimages, attending all-night vigils, ringing church bells at the oddest times throughout the night (something that some visitors admittedly might not find so amusing).

Because of the easy highway route from Mexico City, San Miguel is popular with weekenders from the capital. Arrive early on Friday or make a reservation ahead of time for weekends, especially long weekends. There's also a squeeze on rooms around the Christmas and Easter holidays and around the feast of San Miguel's patron saint, on September 29.
