About Kate Thorley
Andy and I have been spending our winters in Dominica for the last 8 years. We have found a lovely community in Toucari and a good social life in Portsmouth. We are from the UK and are now semi retired. We love to sail and spend summers in the Mediterranean. In between we love our life in UK with family and friends. The variety works well for us.
Kate Thorley purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why Kate Thorley chose Toucari
Location is everything and in just two minutes you can walk into Toucari bay. The village is small and has a local feel rather than touristic. You will find friendly locals who are happy to welcome you and have a chat. Wander the 300 metres past the Rum Shops, fishing boats and kayak/paddle-board hire until you reach the sandy beach. Relax, watch the Pelicans and swim or snorkell out to one of the 2 reefs in the bay. These reefs are known to be 2 of the best on the island and the great thing is you will almost always be exploring on your own. No other tourists to be seen. Toucari has the advantage of being off the beaten track but only 10-15 minutes drive to a good choice of restaurants and bars and grocery shopping. The biggest advantage of being based in the North however is having a wonderful choice of hikes, beaches and interesting sites to visit where you hardly ever see another tourist. The cruise ship passengers rarely make it up here. Some of our recommended trips are only known by a few locals so you really feel like you are adventuring and discovering some spectacular scenes. A good selection of restaurants and bars all within 10 -15 mins drive Shops and supermarkets within 10-15 mins drive

Perfect cottage for 2
Treetops was exactly as pictured. It's comfortable and you can tell some thought went into the design. Toucari Bay is a good place to use as a base for day trips in Dominica. You can also just stay local to enjoy swimming, snorkeling, the local water fall or eating at Keepin It Real. Try to arrive in daylight if possible. The driving directions supplied were great, however the roads and signage can be a bit tricky at night.
First week in April
The cottage was beautiful and suited our needs well. The view of the bay was fantastic. We enjoyed our first week feeling very comfortable returning to such a sanctuary every day. Weekends had a party vibe with the music drifting up from the bar at the bay.
PARADISE AT TOUCARI BAY
Staying at Treetops was like being in Paradise! We were a 2 minute walk down the hill to the black sand beach and the village of Toucari. Our view was of the Toucari Bay - and because we faced west - we had fabulous sunsets every evening - right from our deck! The small house had everything we needed - a kitchen with all the utensils you might need for holiday cooking - a very comfortable bed with a net around it - a bathroom and shower - an outside water supply to wash off the sand before entering the house, 2 decks, and a comfortable sitting area. We didn't need AC - we kept the windows and doors open at night and with the ceiling fans and the floor fan - it was very comfortable. We bought groceries in Portsmouth on our way through there from the airport. There are several rum shops in Toucari where you can buy only the very basics in groceries. There is a shelf of books in the cottage - we left 2 of ours and also read a few of theirs. Caso was our go-to person whenever we needed information. He is a friendly, knowledgeable, gentle person who was most anxious for us to have a wonderful time. He took us on a hike to some recently discovered falls, he took us snorkelling to the shipwreck and the reef, and a general sail down the coast. Because he has always lived there, he knows a lot! He supplied us with freshly cut coconuts every day - what else could a person want! We loved Treetops and were so sorry when our vacation there was over. It was so relaxing......
Amazing stay..wonderful people of Dominica
My wife and I just returned from Dominica, staying at TreeTops Cottage on Toucari Bay. The cottage was truly amazing, tucked away in the trees among the local community, a very short walk to the bay. The people of Dominica are wonderful. We hiked with Caso and his family, who are wonderful, and spent time at Keepin it Real, eating, swimming and snorkeling. Embrace the driving opportunity, there are numerous beaches, hikes and sites to explore…very much worth the drive.
The TreeTops cottage has everything you need: location, dishes, bedding and the cool night breeze!
I have just had the most amazing trip to Dominica. I adored this cute cottage. Up in the trees but easy to access. I loved the peaceful moments just watching the yachts sail by and the birds in the trees twittering away. We tried to get home every evening for the sunsets on the deck. Treetops has been set up with everything you would need. Nice bedding and towels. Loved the hot shower (unusual for Dominica). We were met by Sun a local guy who made us very welcome. He mentioned his Son did a boat ride in Toucari which we took and snorkelling back across the reef was one of our highlights. We also visited Cabrits and the Indian river and the drive in volcano. Well worth doing. If you are looking for a romantic piece of paradise this is it.
Just the best!
This cottage was such a find. It's beautiful, easy to live in, wonderfully constructed and perfectly located. I felt like this was our perfect Caribbean hideaway! We stayed in 3 different places on the island and the others didn't come close. I sincerely cannot recommend Treetops enough. Plus the village, the snorkeling and the locals are all great. Son and Caso looked after us royally - Caso taking us on a brilliant boat trip. Thanks Kate from us both for a truly memorable adventure. Andrew and Elaine
Toucari is the cutest little fishing village in Dominica. The beach is safe for swimming and has 2 natural reefs to snorkel on. The bay has a couple of restaurant/bars where you can chill with a local beer or cocktail and eat lobster or fresh bbq fish. The cruise ship passengers hardly ever come here from Roseau. Some of our recommended trips are only known by a few locals so you really feel like you are adventuring and discovering some spectacular scenes. Cabrits National Park and historic Fort Shirley is well worth a visit, and less than 10 minutes drive. Being rowed down Indian river through the mangroves is a must and feels like you are travelling back in time. The guides will give you lots of information about the wildlife and local history even point out where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. A trip to Syndicate Trail to see the parrots and wander through the rainforest on a maintained track. There are numerous waterfalls and bathing pools at Milton Falls, Chaudierre pool, Lapluy Falls and Lamothe River Falls, or visit the volcano at Cold Soufriere. The nearest beach is 100 metres away with its reef snorkelling which is one of the top dive/snorkelling sites on the island. Dominica's largest beach is Purple Turtle with the picturesque anchored yachts only 10 mins drive. We even have horse-back riding, kayaking, paddle-boarding, sailing, and more, all within walking distance or a short drive away.
