About Mike & Christine Newton

Chrissie and I live near Ashbourne in Derbyshire, the so called "Gateway to the Peaks" but we have always loved travelling to the Cotswolds for long weekend breaks and holidays. We felt the time was right for us to purchase our own country bolthole in the area and be able to explore even more of this beautiful part of the country. This picture was taken of us having fun at the nearby "Daylesford" Cookery School

Mike & Christine Newton purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Mike & Christine Newton chose Lower Swell

From the moment we first walked into Caffreys Cottage, we immediately felt at home and the feeling of space generated by the open plan ground floor was inherent from that moment. The Cottage has the benefit of all modern facilities but also has the character features that we were looking for.

What makes this cottage unique

We believe that the Cottage is a real home from home, is bright and airy in the summer but also cosy and snug in the colder months. Furnished beautifully, comfort has not been compromised and the location is perfect to take full advantage of all that the Cotswolds has to offer.

Beautiful cottage in the hamlet of lower swell, very close to stow on the wold and Bourton on water, backing into surrounding farmland... stayed with our three kids and the place was so well and thoughtfully appointed it was just perfect for returning to for a lazy afternoon and family meals together - we would definitely recommend and hope to be back soon! Thank you so much! Aimee and Mike

A wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful week in Caffreys Cottage! The cottage was perfect for us, very well appointed and equipped and wonderfully cosy. Clean and beautifully furnished, really a home from home.

The location is perfect for exploring the Cotswolds. We know the area well and this provided a great base to explore old and new favourites.

The Water Tower is a great addition to the accommodation allowing for great flexibility.

The Golden Ball Inn, Just a 5 minutes walk, served the most delicious steak I’ve had in a while- highly recommended but be sure to book in advance.

I imagine the cottage would be quite magical at Christmas!

Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to all party types- friends or families.

Great communication throughout from Mike which was most appreciated.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a great review. I shall pass your comments to our team, as it is always inspiring to know your efforts are so well appreciated. The house does lend itself to the warmer months with its feeling of space and light but also it comes alive in winter and during the feative season as you rightly say. Thanks again and we look forward to your return.

There isn't much more I can add to the great reviews already given. The packet we received prior to our stay was the most detailed that I have ever received and very helpful. We were six adults that spent six nights and we highly recommend this great refurbished barn (very hard to tell how it could have been a barn!!!)

Lower Swell

The picturesque hamlet of Lower Swell lies amongst some of England's most beautiful natural countryside where in amongst the hedgerows and wild flowers you can see ancient moss covered Milestones. Just a short distance from Stow-on--the- Wold, an old Market Town at the highest point of the Cotswolds, the Village Green is home to a stunning War Memorial and nearby the River Dickler flows past cottages of mellow Cotswold stone. The Village is both quintessentially English and tranquil, with the church of St Mary dating back to Norman times. It features beautiful stained glass, which on a sunny day reflects through to the wonderful stone floors. But what better way to spend the day than taking one of the many walks (including the "Heart of England Way" ) and finishing off back in the traditional Cotswold pub the Golden Ball Inn !

Stow-on-the Wold

At nearly 800ft. Stow is the highest of the Cotswold Towns. Sitting on the Roman Fosse Way and at the point where a number of roads meet, has meant it has always been an important trading centre. It has a long history and the Market Square is large and impressive, which testifies to the Town's former importance. The Square is surrounded by town houses, independent shops, antique centres along with cosy cafes, Inns and restaurants. Some of the largest sheep fairs took place in the town but today the only market to take place is the monthly Farmers Market which still remains very popular
