A luxurious family property close to lac Vassiviere beach resorts and ammenities
My wife and I fell in love with the un-spoilt rustic beauty of the Limousin in 2004 and embarked on a painstaking hunt for the perfect rural bolt hole. In 2006 we discovered Artin Sec nestled in a valley and overlooked in the distance by the spire of Saint Martin Chateau. Our offer was accepted and we have never looked back. During the following 10 years we have lovingly restored the 5500 SQ Foot Farmhouse and added some Luxury to boot. Our objective was to make our holidays here both peaceful and relaxing but with the added bonus of occupying our children so the whole family would never be short of an activity or two.
Owner purchased this Farmhouse in 2006

Perfect rural retreat for relaxing and getting away from it all
Large, beautiful home in the French countryside with stunning views from the decked area. A short drive away from the beautiful Lac de Vassiviere where you can sit on the beach, swim in the lake, hire paddle boards etc or go geocaching on the island. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and were blessed with hot sunny weather during our week. The pool is great to cool off in and kept the kids occupied but is not large (the pictures might suggest something larger) but this was fine for them. There is a grocery shop in the village but I would recommend getting a larger shop in the nearby town for more choice and cheaper prices. Each night we star gazed from the deck where we were able to see planets, shooting stars, satellites, the Milky Way and the International Space Station it was magical and so clear. Loads of birds of prey visible during our week and even some wild boar in the field below the garden. We didn’t venture too far from the house as didn’t feel the need but there was plenty to keep a family or group occupied for a week. We stayed with two other families and each had enough space to not get on top of each other so this worked perfectly and the layout of the bedrooms worked well too. Would not hesitate to recommend the house to others and the Limousin is a beautifully lush part of France. We’d love to return.
Wonderfully relaxing stay
Three families, 6 adults and 6 children (7 to 16yrs), spent a week at Artinsec at the end of August and had a fabulous time.
We wanted for nothing, everything is provided from paella pans to the washing machine - home from home with extra luxury and French charm. It is right in the middle of rural France, which is what appealed to us, and the views are spectacular from dawn to dusk.
We spent our days lazing on the deck, playing rounder's and Kubb and of course taking a dip in the pool. Evenings were spent sitting around the numerous tables available both inside and out, eating and drinking and playing games. We made use of the BBQ's and the children had great fun making pizza's to bake in the pizza oven followed by fire on a more chilly night.
Out and about we visited Lake Vassiviere and enjoyed pizza as the sun set, there are plenty of activities we would have liked to have done at the lake a week just wasn't enough to fit in everything we wanted to do. Arben d'arben (Go Ape) was fantastic - as many previous reviewers have said, so much better than UK equivalents and very reasonably priced. Peyrat de Chateau is a short ride away and some of us visited the Resistance Museum in the village, small but interesting and incredibly moving. The bakers and SPAR in Peyrat de Chateau are great and the local black pudding from the butchers counter in the SPAR was delicious. We also visited a local waterfall on our travels, able to see Artinsec from the one road that can be seen in the distance, and frequented the supermarche a couple of times to top up the wine stores!
The house has been renovated and refurbished with care and has been developed into a perfect holiday home to cater for all. It was lovely to meet Martin and Clare as we arrived, they really have an attention to detail; the house was immaculate and everything well thought through. I would not hesitate to recommend Artinsec as a holiday location with friends or extended family and despite vowing to never return twice to a holiday destination I would definitely consider a return trip.
Lovely house for a big group
We had two weeks in lovely Artinsec in August, we were a party of 12, 3 families with 6 children between 18 months and 4 years old.
The house was ideal for us, plenty of space inside and out, stairgates and the a gate access to the pool made our lives a little easier! The outside space was ideal as again it was gated so the kids could play on the decking safely. We heard the wild boars and saw a few deers!
The village of Peyrat de Chateau is 3 miles or so away, it has a nice bakery and a deli as well as a couple of cafe bars and a nice pizza place for an evening meal. It really is a picturesque village.
The butcher at the Spar in Peyrat is really good. We had a couple of BBQs and even lit the pizza oven one day to make pizzas for the kids (not a massive hit to be honest!) and a big piece of sirloin steak (from the Spar!) for the adults (huge hit!)
We had a few days out at Lake Vassiviere which were great, nice sandy beaches, great parks right on the waterfront and nice beach side dining. We went on the pedalos one day which went down well, the road train onto the lake vassiviere island was good, there wasn't much on the island (a cafe and a couple of shops) and the kids got fed up, but its worth a visit, even if you get the train straight back. There's a lot around lake vassiviere for older kids which we didn't try, but the floats activity looked great!
Back to the house, it really has everything you need and more. There is loads of space. It is in a very rural location, but this was part of the charm.
We had an amazing time and hope to return soon.
Holiday August 2017
Even with eight adults and seven children (10 and under) the house was more than adequate to give us all plenty of room, plenty of bathrooms and a good amount of eating areas. Not only was The house very well equipped in all respects, plenty of China, cutlery, and glasses, with two large fridges and a good washing machine. Itwas very clean and the house has been beautifully restored and is far more impressive in real life than it appears in the photos. The area was beautiful and the lake wonderful for the children. Our only minor criticism would be that there was no microwave and with a baby that would have been useful. The pool is slightly smaller than it looks in pics but proved big enough for us.. it has been a very relaxing holiday the views from the house are magnificent and we would definitely think about returning.
very comfortable house in magnificent environment
We had a wonderfull vacation in Artin Sec. Plenty of room for 6 adults and 8 children and all the comfort we needed. The view and the silence in the valley are stunning!
Week at Artinsec July 22nd 2017
We spent a week at this gite from 22-29th July 2017 and had a great time. The gite is huge, with 2 kitchens and three dining areas. The weather was cloudy frequently (which is quite unusual for France in July in our experience), however it didn't dampen our spirits! From the large decked area we saw a family of wild bore, deer and foxes on several occasions in the very next field. We would recommend at least one day at the nearby Lac Vassiviere. We did paddle boarding, water skiing and were towed along at great speed on a large inflatable, all in one afternoon without any advance booking! The charges were all reasonable too (6 euro for half hour paddle boarding, 15 euro for 10 minutes water skiing and 25 euros for 3 people on the giant inflatable for 10 minutes, which was more than enough!). Tennis courts are available to book there for 6 euro per hour, but there's also one that's free and equally as good on your way into Peyrat from the gite (on the right hand side once you've turned left after the donkey sanctuary). It's hidden quite well behind some tall hedge.
The Wednesday morning market at Bourganeuf was good. Particularly if you're after cheese (at least four stalls), fresh fruit and veg (largest peaches we've ever seen and really juicy too), and sugared/dried fruits (looking forward to trying these now we're back home).
The nearest small town is 5 minutes away (Peyrat le Chateau), which has a well stocked SPAR with petrol station. On Tuesday evenings from 5pm Marco's pizza van stops on the square/car park in the centre of town, opposite the tourist information and boulangerie. He offers a choice of around 20 different pizzas, all thin crust and 12 inch, from around 9-15 euros, plus cold drinks. We took ours up to the picnic tables by the fishing lake in town and did some fishing while we ate and drank on a nice sunny evening. The lake contains carp, tench, roach, pike, zander and trout. We managed to catch a 3-4lb carp, 2 small tench and several roach, but no large pike or trout alas! (although we did see several large fish breaking the water while we were there).
For those who like to dine out Chez Julie in Nedde (around 25 minutes away) is worth considering. We went there for lunch one day. The menu is decided on the day so be prepared for little choice! However, if you like most foods then you'll get a nice, inexpensive meal (13.5 euros for 3 course lunch plus cheese and coffee) in an informal, family friendly atmosphere.
ArtinSec is Nestled in the rural splendour of the Limousin. We are conveniently located close to two market towns, a pretty lake-side village and the spectacular Lake Vassiviere which offers activities for all ages and abilities including sailing, canoeing, tree top adventures, beautiful life guarded beaches, outstanding childrens play areas and some stunning walks and cycle rides. Situated within walking distance of the farmhouse is a picturesque donkey sanctuary providing treks around the local country side ranging 1 hour to 1 day. Our closest city Limoges, a 45 minute drive. Steeped in History and offering fantastic eateries, a medieval quarter, plenty of shops and a bustling central market more akin to our Italian cousins. Limoges is also famous for it's fine porcelain which you can visit at a number of manufacturing facilities and outlets dotted around the city. In the opposite direction you will find Aubusson, a pretty market town famed for its fine tapestries. Other close attractions include the City de Insects, the Gueret wolf park, The Parc du Reynou Zoo, L'Aquapolis which has an Olympic size pool, a family water fun zone with wave machine and slides, spa and gym. Further afield you will find Rocamadour, Collonge la rouge and the cosmopolitan town of Brieve. For winter fun the ski resort of Mont Dore is less that 1.5 hours away.
