About Wayne and Martha Phelps

Martha & I grew up in Virginia. We moved near the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay which is where we fell in love with boating and fishing. Later, we lived in Ft. Pierce FL, just off the Indian River.

Now we are back in VA, near Colonial Beach. We enjoy this area, but the water can't compare to the Beautiful waters of Cherokee Sound.

Wayne and Martha Phelps purchased this house in 2006

Why Wayne and Martha Phelps chose Cherokee Sound

Martha and I visited Abaco the first time 20 years ago. Since then we have visited many times, renting vacation homes and traveling by boat.

We rented houses in Marsh Harbor, Man O War Cay and Cherokee. Our boat travels took us to The Exuma Islands and around the Abacos.

A friend showed us around Cherokee Sound and we were hooked. After meeting some of the friendly folks in Cherokee we decided to build, starting

our house in 2006. The builders were Roger Pender, Hartie Albury and Andrew Roberts, craftsmen all and you can see the results. They all live in Cherokee.

What makes this house unique

Some of what you get in Cherokee Sound; Beautiful waters for swimming, snorkeling, diving and exploring. Great fishing, both in the sound for bonefish and in the ocean for Dolphin, Marlin, Wahoo and Tuna, fishing guides available.

Beautiful secluded beaches abound, often you find only your footprints there. Go shelling or just relax and enjoy peace and quiet.

Some of what you won't get in Cherokee; Crowds, waiting in line, traffic, rude people, the tourist hustle.

The people are friendly, stop in at the market for groceries or just to find out what is happening in the village. Pete's Pub is a short drive away and a great place for fun and food.

If you want shopping, bars, night life and more Marsh Harbor has all that and more.

Relaxing week

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Wayne & Martha's property was wonderful! The house was clean, spacious, and quiet. Caretakers Veronica and Captain Randy are only a two minute walk away and frequently offered to help with anything we needed.

The sandy beach on the Atlantic side is a five minute walk. The waves are more powerful here. If you want a calm beach where you can wade out into the bay through warm shallow water and sandbars several hundred yards from shore then go the other direction to Cherokee, it is just a 10 minutes walk to the village. There are a couple quaint stores in Cherokee, and even a laundromat. The people are friendly, laid back, and helpful. Take time to talk to them. Captain Randy, fishes most days and is always willing to sell you some fresh (and I mean FRESH) fish. There is nothing like pan frying fish fresh right out of the ocean. Although tv was on the bottom of our list of things to do, the satellite tv is excellent and we had access to way more channels than we would ever need.

Make the 10 minute drive to Pete's Pub in Little Harbour. The road into the community is rough but the destination is more than worth it! Where else can you sit barefoot at a bar on the beach? The drinks and food are excellent and surprisingly reasonably priced.

There is also a beautiful public beach just a five minute drive away. You park and then walk past the green of a golf course and when you arrive the beach is clean, sandy, and serene. Ask the locals for directions.

Although Cherokee is secluded it is only a 30 minute drive from Marsh Harbour, so you have easy access to well stocked grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping if that is your thing.

At night you can sit on the deck on either side of the house and gaze at the stars. During the day pick the deck you want depending on whether or not you want the wind and sun. The house was well designed to enjoy both the indoors and outdoors.

This was the perfect getaway to relax and recharge!

Great Place for Privacy and To Unwind

  • 5 of 5

We spent six days at this wonderful home located on Cherokee Sound. The home is perfect for a couple or a family of six. You have access to two private beaches, one on the Atlantic side, and one in a secluded bay. The secluded bay beach is a 20 minute walk along the ocean side, but be careful, as this trek requires sturdy shoes due to the sharp limestone rock outcrops. The trek is well worth it when you get to this beautiful beach, which is all your own, unless someone has approached the beach by boat. There are coconut trees around the house, which provide an ample supply of fresh coconut milk for our drinks. The outside deck looks toward the Atlantic Ocean and provides a great view of the open water. The yard is great for kids to play in, and being birders, my wife and I were awed at the number of birds we saw around the house. The Bahama Parrot was a common visitor in the area. Just down the road lives Randy and Veronica who are caretakers of the property, and they are extremely helpful in making your stay a great one. We went deep sea fishing with Randy one day, and the next day, he took us snorkeling. The town of Cherokee Sound is just down the road, you can literally walk to it, and it has a small grocery store that has everything you would need for your stay. I was very impressed with what they carried in the store. The longest peir (700 feet) in the Bahamas is located in Cherokee Sound and is great place to hangout to watch birds, people, the tides, etc. Wayne and Martha are owners of the house and they were very helpul in making our visit a wonderful one. They are readily accessible through e-mail. If you have any problems with the house, Randy and Veronica are just right down the road. My wife and I really enjoyed the privacy and quietness this property offered. If you didn't make the trip into Cherokee Sound or Little Harbor, you would hardly run into another person. If you are traveling to this area, I would recommend stopping at Maxwell's grocery store in Marsh Harbor, stocking up with supplies, and if you run out, you can always visit the local grocery in Cherokee Sound. Car rental is basically a "mom and pop" type of business, no large name brand rental companies. Our rental car had 180,000 miles on it! Pete's Pub in Little Harbor is great place to go (especially for families) if you want to eat out. Overall: A great place to stay to you want to get away from the rat race!

Relaxing Stay

  • 4 of 5

I stayed at this house with a few friends for 8 nights as I worked a golf tournament at the Abaco Club. This house is clean with nearly everything you could need to enjoy a stay on the island. The showers were hot and had good pressure. The bedding and blankets are a little tired, and additional blankets would have been appreciated as a couple nights were rather chilly. The two beaches nearby are gorgeous. Watching Bay to the east has powerful waves and you can find a good amount of sea glass. The other beach to the west near the 'long dock' is much calmer and very shallow. We spent hours walking around the conch shells at low tide.

There is a little grocery store in Cherokee that you can use to get food for meals prepared at the house, but I would recommend stocking up in Marsh Harbour before making your way down to the house.

The internet is only good enough for some light email reading, and once the data 'runs out' you have to pay for more. There is a small TV in the living room with DirecTV service, but the local channels such as FOX and CBS did not come in and we were unable to watch the NFL playoff games. You are expected to either take your trash to a dump site on the island before you leave or leave a small fee for Randy (the next door neighbor) to make a run for you (this is in addition to the cleaning fee).

Overall, the house was a quiet, relaxing place to come back to at the end of the day. I would recommend this house to the traveler(s) looking to get away from it all.

A true retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house is super clean, with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a powder room. The first floor has the master bedroom with a big closet and 5' shower in the bath. Outside the master is the powder room. Upstairs has two bedrooms (well, one is a loft like space) and a full bath with tub. The property caretaker does a great job, and lives just a short walk from the property. She is not at all obtrusive, but is responsive when things need sorting out (like if the water pressure drops - the filter needs to be cleaned).

There is a view of the ocean from the back deck, and a nice expanse of flat lawn in the front, perfect for bocce (played with coconuts of course!). We would have liked some outdoor furniture beyond the two folding lounge chairs, but we had our hammocks and were able to string them up on the porches. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking, and delightfully, had a good supply of storage containers perfect for picnics on the beach! There were also two coolers, a large and a small one, which we didn't use but were nice to have available. Make sure to bring your own beach towels & gear - the house was short on some of the stuff we commonly find in other beach rentals, like beach towels/beach toys - but it's not a big deal if you know in advance.

There are two easy walk accessible beaches - one faces the Atlantic, is rough and can be windy. It is a great place to find sea glass (5 minute walk). The other is on the Sound, and features calm, shallow waters, a long dock, and a small picnic shelter and table (10 minute walk, half along the water, at little kid speed). It is also the site of a conch nursery, so there is lots of opportunity to observe these creatures and find empty shells. The village of Cherokee Sound has a small shop with groceries and assorted necessities, but no beer/alcohol/wine. Best advice is to stock up in Marsh Harbour! You can fly directly to Marsh Harbour from the US on a couple of different airlines, or you can hop from one of the more populated Bahamian islands - be prepared for delays in flights, especially if you island hop.

There are no restaurants in Cherokee Sound. It takes about 40 minutes to get to the property from Marsh Harbour. If you like solitude, a peaceful tiny community, a lovely calm beach (great for little kids), and enjoy preparing your meals, it is a wonderful spot. If you want parties and nightlife, look elsewhere.... although the town put on a pretty impressive fireworks display on New Year's Eve

Remote, beautiful, big home

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely home by the sea. We had a great view of the ocean, our own coconut tree to chop fresh coconuts from, and a lot of privacy and beauty all around us.

If WiFi is important to you, I recommend contacting the host (Veronica) ahead of time and make sure it is set up and working. It was not working the four days we were there and no one came to fix it even though we told Randy (Veronica's husband) about it a few times. Veronica was sick so we didn't see her at all while we were there. Randy was helpful, he leant us a machete to chop coconuts and he let us borrow his cell phone to make a call since the wifi wasn't working.

Everything else in the house worked (except the bath tub plug and the tv- the TV did work for playing music from a few stations).

The house is spacious and beautiful, everything seemed home made with craft and care. There were two queen sized beds and a hanging, swinging bed as well. There are three bathrooms, two with showers. The kitchen was big and had everything we needed. The place was very clean when we got there.

This is a great place to stay if you want to get away from it all and experience your own paradise.

The property was extremely spacious with distant sea views - ideal for the most relaxing vacation.

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 22 year old daughter and I stayed at Wayne and Martha's property from 24th July until 10th August 2016. We travel extensively but can honestly say that this was one of the most relaxing vacations ever. The lovely property is located on Cherokee Heights with a very pleasant sea view and away from other properties, making it very quiet. High ceilings and effective air conditioning contributed to our comfort and a sense of space.

Our neighbours, Randy and Veronica, who are locals and look after the property for Wayne and Martha, could not have been more helpful and welcoming. Veronica is a legendary cook (we had the pleasure of one of her delicious meals) and Randy is a very experienced bonefishing and deep sea fishing guide. I spent many happy hours fly fishing with Randy, another excellent guide on the Marls and on a DIY basis, catching 14 bonefish up to 4 pounds. Randy is also a commercial fisherman and we feasted on his superb fresh mahi mahi and crawfish. He took delivery of a new deep sea fishing boat whilst we were there, thus offering great potential for guests to arrange exciting fishing charters in the future.

We visited many places on Abaco and enjoyed day trips to a number of the Cays, taking ferries from Marsh Harbour and Treasure Bay but one of our favourite places for a swim was the Long Dock, a short stroll from the property .

Thank you, Wayne and Martha, for a very memorable vacation.

Best wishes,

Ed, Judy and Frances
