Your vacation home is located on a hill overlooking Cherokee Sound and the village of Cherokee. To the east, just a short walk from the house, is beautiful Watching Bay Beach with it's white sugar sand and coral reef.
Swimming and snorkeling in the waters of Cherokee Sound is pleasant and protected. The ocean beach and reef is there for the more adventurous.
Walking around the village is a great way to meet some of the local folks. Stop by the market for groceries or to catch up on the latest local news!

Martha & I grew up in Virginia. We moved near the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay which is where we fell in love with boating and fishing. Later, we lived in Ft. Pierce FL, just off the Indian River.
Now we are back in VA, near Colonial Beach. We enjoy this area, but the water can't compare to the Beautiful waters of Cherokee Sound.
Wayne and Martha Phelps purchased this cottage in 2006
Martha and I visited Abaco the first time 20 years ago. Since then we have visited many times, renting vacation homes and traveling by boat.
We rented houses in Marsh Harbor, Man O War Cay and Cherokee. Our boat travels took us to The Exuma Islands and around the Abacos.
A friend showed us around Cherokee Sound and we were hooked. After meeting some of the friendly folks in Cherokee we decided to build, starting
our house in 2006. The builders were Roger Pender, Hartie Albury and Andrew Roberts, craftsmen all and you can see the results. They all live in Cherokee.
Some of what you get in Cherokee Sound; Beautiful waters for swimming, snorkeling, diving and exploring. Great fishing, both in the sound for bonefish and in the ocean for Dolphin, Marlin, Wahoo and Tuna, fishing guides available.
Beautiful secluded beaches abound, often you find only your footprints there. Go shelling or just relax and enjoy peace and quiet.
Some of what you won't get in Cherokee; Crowds, waiting in line, traffic, rude people, the tourist hustle.
The people are friendly, stop in at the market for groceries or just to find out what is happening in the village. Pete's Pub is a short drive away and a great place for fun and food.
If you want shopping, bars, night life and more Marsh Harbor has all that and more.
My wife, 22 year old daughter and I stayed at Wayne and Martha's property from 24th July until 10th August 2016. We travel extensively but can honestly say that this was one of the most relaxing vacations ever. The lovely property is located on Cherokee Heights with a very pleasant sea view and away from other properties, making it very quiet. High ceilings and effective air conditioning contributed to our comfort and a sense of space.
Our neighbours, Randy and Veronica, who are locals and look after the property for Wayne and Martha, could not have been more helpful and welcoming. Veronica is a legendary cook (we had the pleasure of one of her delicious meals) and Randy is a very experienced bonefishing and deep sea fishing guide. I spent many happy hours fly fishing with Randy, another excellent guide on the Marls and on a DIY basis, catching 14 bonefish up to 4 pounds. Randy is also a commercial fisherman and we feasted on his superb fresh mahi mahi and crawfish. He took delivery of a new deep sea fishing boat whilst we were there, thus offering great potential for guests to arrange exciting fishing charters in the future.
We visited many places on Abaco and enjoyed day trips to a number of the Cays, taking ferries from Marsh Harbour and Treasure Bay but one of our favourite places for a swim was the Long Dock, a short stroll from the property .
Thank you, Wayne and Martha, for a very memorable vacation.

My friend and I visited for a week and this house was everything we expected. Beautiful views of the sound and the ocean. Cherokee sound was lovely and the location was great for taking day trips for sightseeing. We enjoyed our week away, never lost for things to do, places to go (recommend renting a car). Randy and Veronica (neighbors on the hill) were extremely helpful with anything we needed, including preparing us a delicious Bahamian meal - Veronica is a wonderful cook.
We had very little time to book a Honeymoon - and we knew we wanted to avoid the common tourist traps. We knew we wanted to come to Abaco, and we were NOT disappointed. The house is exactly as it is shown, with the proper amenities, including satellite TV and WiFi (should it rain, or you need a lounge day)! The owners were wonderful setting up the reservation for us, and helped us with any concerns or questions we had. There are local families nearby, should there be any issues, or if you have further questions once you arrive - not to mention they were a TON of fun to hang out with, invited us over every night if we were around! It is very peaceful, away from the hustle of Nassau and Marsh Harbour - that said it is a bit of a drive from the airport - so make sure you have a good rental car! There are beautiful - and I cannot stress that word enough - beaches nearby. Postcard perfect. We were there for a week; we never ran out of things to do, places to go, activities, etc. Every night was sound sleeping, and we can't wait to go back!
We rented this house from May19-June19 and it was exactly what we were looking for. My friend and I decided to take our classes online for the summer and spend a month in the Bahamas. By chance we happened to find this amazing house. Cherokee Sound is a small settlement on Abaco and all the people were very friendly and helpful. The neighbors were very welcoming and invited us over several times for friesh fish they had caught! Amazing home cooked Bahamian food! The town has a small Food Fair which is a very small grocer with most items but there is a large grocer in Marsh Harbor for the big trips. About a 2.5 minute walk in an amazing little beach with a 275 foot dock, locals call it Long Dock. The water is clear and the Bone Fishing is amazing. We saw all kinds of wildlife: starfish, sting rays, crabs, dolphins, sharks (small nurse sharks), hermit crabs, turtles and various species of birds. On the other side of the hill (about a 1.5 minute walk) is another beach called Watching Bay and we found bags and bags of sea glass here, it borders the Atlantic Ocean and so the water is dark and the waves are BIG. We went a drank our morning coffee here almost everymorning. We rented a Jeep from the owners of the house. A short drive from the house is Winding Bay and it is a picturesque beach with clear blue water and about two miles of beach. Past Winding Bay is Pete's Pub, the only restaurant in the area. The area of Cherokee Sound is very remote and is perfect for a relaxed fishing trip. Partiers should look else where... The People at Pete's were amazing! Pete helped me catch my first fish with a fly rod and they invited us for cookouts on the beach several times! I was overly impressed by the food fresh fish every day, they also have cheeseburgers! Great food and Great People. This house in Cherokee has everything!!! The A/C worked very well! The House runs on a Reverse Osmosis system and as a very large tank, although water conservation is advised. They have direct TV for the days you are stuck inside due to rain. The beds are comfortable and the house is VERY clean. The power went out a few times but that is Typical of Abaco and it never stayed off for more than two hours. Overall this was one of the best vacations I have ever been on. The house was perfect! Thank you Wayne and Martha!! Planning on renting this house again Spring 2013 and hopefully, we will make it an annual trip! Again, Thank you, Wayne and Martha we had a BLAST!
Taking our sailboat on the Caribbean 1500 from Hampton, Virginia to Marsh Harbour in Nov of 2010, we rented this house for a month. The first week, our crew stayed here and the rest of the time, we had family come visit. We found the home to be "as new" with everything needed, just bring your food, drinks and swimsuit. I can still see myself on the porch over looking the ocean, coffee in hand, and watching wild green parrots fly all around. The town of Cherokee is quaint and charming, with the friendliest people you'll ever meet. In a few short weeks, we were fishing, conching, and diving for lobsters with the locals. laid back at it's best........
My wife and I stayed at the property for several nights in May 2011. Our overall experience was excellent. We've been visitng the Abacos for 20 years and discovered Cherokee during a land tour while vacationing on Man-O-War Cay. After several more visits, we decided to inquire about a rental and were ultimately directed to this property by local word of mouth. We were not disappointed.
The house was immaculate and well maintained, and every advertised amenity was available and in top-notch shape. Due to its hilltop location, views (360 degrees) are spectacular.
There's a well stocked grocery store in the settlement, and Marsh Harbor is a short drive away for other supplies and diversions. You will need a car. (We stocked up on food and adult beverages in MH before driving down to start the rental.) We cocktailed and ate -- using the supplied gas grill -- on the ocean-facing porch, which is also a great place to observe the locals trolling just off the beach for wahoo, mahi and tuna. We recommend binoculars and a VHF radio to enhance this experience. One of the caretakers, who live next door, is a commercial fisherman; he always had fresh-caught seafood for sale at competitive prices. When we wanted to eat out, we drove to Pete's Pub in nearby Little Harbor, which has a has a great bar, restaurant and beach.
It's a short walk to the beach on Cherokee Sound, one of the prettiest in the area. Even closer is Martha's Beach, which the owners take great pains to keep clean; it's a five-minute walk from the property. One day while strolling on the ocean beach we saw a large whale breach no more than a quarter mile offshore
The availability of fresh water can be a problem in the Bahamas, but there's plenty here, thanks to a large cistern and a RO watermaker. (Reasonable consumption is urged, however.)
This is not a place to rent for access to tiki bars and nightlife. But if you're looking for a slower pace, coupled with glorious scenery and readily available nature activities such as swimming, snorkeling, fishing and bird-watching, then this is the property for you. We can't wait to go back.
